Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Trans-Mississippi," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Trans-Mississippi in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Trans-Mississippi when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Trans-Mississippi, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

This edition is written in English. However, there is a running French thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of The Circus Boys on the Mississippi. This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your French-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to “difficult, yet commonly used” English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in French, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to French-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in French or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. Product Description
The University of Mississippi, also known as OleMiss, is a public, coeducational research university located in Oxford, Mississippi. Founded in 1848, the school is composed of the main campus in Oxford and three branch campuses located in Booneville, Tupelo, andSouthaven. UM maintains a field station in Bay Springs as well as the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Additionally, it is both a sea-grant and space-grant institute. Sixty-nine percent of undergraduates are from Mississippi, and nineteen percent of all students are minorities. International students come from sixty-six nations. The University got its nickname "Ole Miss"via a contest in 1897. That same year, the student yearbookwas being published for the first time. As a way to finda name for the book, a contest was held to solicit suggestions from the student body. Elma Meek, a student at the time, submitted the winning entry of Ole Miss.Interestingly, the term "Ole Miss" is not derived from Mississippi, butwas a term of respect used by slaves for the wife of aplantation owner ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a definitive guide to the football team...
This volume is a bunch of articles about Mississippi (college) Bulldogs Football literally copied and pasted off Wikipedia literally as is, with literally no clean-up of text or anything else. Literally. The text is very clunky since it was not cleaned up or formatted properly. You can see arrows where on Wikipedia there were links, as well as 'citation needed' and other html markup. Foreign language text along with symbols are also missing from the printed text in this book.

There's nothing with with Wikipedia itself. It's a lovely source of free information, but it needs to be taken with a grain of salt due to vandals and people posting - intentionally or not - inaccurate information. To exacerbate the problem, the original subject of this book actually only makes up part of this volume, so you get a lot of stuff that you don't need but still have to pay for. If you've read Wikipedia, you are familiar with how some words within the article provide links to other articles (for those curious and wishing to expand their research/reading) and while this can be helpful, not all of the links within any particular Wikipedia article are too relevant to the original subject matter. There is also often a list of other articles at the bottom of any Wikipedia article that are 'See also...' but these articles vary in relevance. Sadly, the 'editors' of this book simply click these links and copy and paste these articles, whether or not they're truly relevant (or even related) to the original subject matter.

The pictures within this book are also poor-quality, shrunk down from their original versions on Wikipedia and made black-and-white. Diagrams and other technical images therefore become near impossible to read or study. The size of the actual book itself isn't very large, and is about the size of a regular paperback.

You're better off reading the original articles on Wikipedia for free, and if you wish for longer and more relevant books on this particular subject, you can look right here on Amazon for books written and edited by people who are genuinely passionate, educated, and knowledgeable about the subject. ... Product Description

"There is a mystique about Ole Miss," David G. Sansing says in his new book The University of Mississippi: A Sesquicentennial History (University Press of Mississippi, cloth $37.00).

Sansing, a professor emeritus of history, says the University and its story hold a special attraction for those who have learned there. "Some have called it holy ground, others hallowed ground. During a recent Black Alumni Reunion Danny Covington called Ole Miss addictive."

Few Southern institutions have such a storied past. After its founding, the University assembled one of the finest scientific collections in the antebellum South. Closed during the Civil War, the University endured and re-opened to expand from a liberal arts institution to one with highly developed professional schools. In the civil rights struggle Ole Miss became a battleground. Since 1963 the University has made remarkable progress in serving the racial and ethnic diversity of its constituency.

Working with the university libraries, the Department of Archives and History, and countless alumni, Sansing unfurls this 150-year history in The University of Mississippi, a book he labored on since 1995.

Capturing dramatic changes was key to Sansing's efforts. The University that began with four professors and boasted electric power in 1901 is now listed by the internet site Yahoo! as one of the nation's most "wired" universities, referring to the University's level of hardware and internet access.

African American historian John Hope Franklin, who had visited the campus during the civil rights struggle, visited again in 1998 and found "a complete revolution in race relations on campus" and declared, "we don't have quite as far to go as we thought we did."

Sansing says, "In a world of ravishing change, when Ole Miss Alumni come back to Oxford, they do not just stroll across the campus and through the Grove, they retrace the steps of their forebears, not just over place and space, but back through time as well.

"For many alumni Ole Miss is more than their alma mater; it is a link, a nexus to who they were and are, to where they came from," Sansing says. "This sesquicentennial history is written for them, the students, faculty, friends, patrons, and alumni of the university."

David G. Sansing is the author of A History of the Mississippi Governor's Mansion (with Carroll Waller), Making Haste Slowly: The Troubled History of Higher Education in Mississippi, and Mississippi: A Study of Your State (with Ray Skates). In 1990, he was named Teacher of the Year at the University of Mississippi. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks references or citations for various claims by the author.
I have to give this book a 1-star rating because of a lack of complete references or citations. Many times, the author references his own, previous works. That's a huge red flag for me.In addition, there is one specific statement that looks to be placed on purpose to present aimed view.In the section concerning the creation of the Ole Miss moniker, the author accurately states it was the result of a contest won by Ms. Elma Meek.Immediately following the statement, the author inserts a statement that the term is also a name used by slaves to refer to the lady of the plantation.Continuing, there is no further comment on this statement, including the in the citations.

Sansing states, "In 1897 the Greek societies established a college yearbook, which they titled Ole Miss, a name suggested by Elma Meek, a student from Oxford. The term "Ole Miss" was a title domestic slaves in the Old South used to distinguish the mistress of the plantation house from the young misses of the family" (1999, p. 168).There is no record that Elma Meek, who never owned slaves or lived on a plantation, chose this name because of this connotation. While the author does not say that is the case, he definitely is trying to cause the reader to assume or consider this.He fails to point out any other views on the subject, like how common the usage of the term "ole" was, or that the official government and postal abbreviation for Mississippi was "Miss." from the early 1800s to the mid 1900s.Besides, many other sources say slaves used the term "ole missus," not merely "ole miss."This is why I believe Sansing is attempting to create history where there is none.

I am not a fan of history writers, like news reporters, who bend or manipulate written word to pursue an underlying goal.I believe Sansing, an outspoken critic of Ole Miss' traditions, implicitly placed this unsupported comment where he did to drive an opinion.Buyers should consider this prior to their purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
If you want to remember The REAL 'University of Mississippi', why it was founded, and what it stood for, this is a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best history of Ole Miss!
I loved this book. Of course being an Ole Miss graduate and knowing the author helped, but I couldn't put it down. The early history of the university is especially well done. It includes as a bonus an overview ofhigher education and its struggles in all the State's colleges. Dr. Sansingdispells the wide-spread idea that Governor Bilbo caused the university tolose accreditation by his political hiring and firing; his activityactually was objective and positive for the most part. The section on theMeredith crisis and resulting riots (and resulting and still lingeringnegative public image) was also well reported and written. I was on campusthat Sunday afternoon and night (desperately trying to get off), and thebook gives an accurate and fair representation of that event. The last partof the book, though not as interesting as the first, leaves a record ofvastly improved racial relations and optimism for the future. The author,an early and consistent advocate for the "universal brotherhood ofman" has played a significant role in that progress. ... Read more
