5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling autobiography!
If you ever wanted a first-hand account of life as a black person in the Deep South of Mississippi before and during the Civil Rights movement, then this is the book to read.Excellently written by Ann Moody, a woman who grew up dirt poor in Mississippi, whose family had to struggle just to put food on the table. But as Ann herself put it, her greatest struggle growing up was "being black".And as she grew up and saw the injustices heaped upon herself and her family and friends just because of the color of their skin, Ann got involved in the various civil rights groups; she was one of the people involved in the famous Woolworth counter sit-ins. At that counter for 'whites only', she allowed herself to be ridiculed and taunted, have ketchup and mustard tossed on her, and get burned by cigerettes while the crowd around her grew to dangerous levels.I didn't grow up poor or black in the south, so I would never even begin to understand the suffering Ann went through, but she tells her story in such a remarkable way so that I can see her life through her eyes, and it's not a pretty picture. But she's a strong woman and very much to be admired.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but it is sobering and a story that needed to be told.

5-0 out of 5 stars There are very few reading experiences like Anne Moody's autobiography...
This book will really suck you in. It's hard for people who aren't from the South to understand the family dynamics, the method of speak, the rural center of it all, etc. But the time period covered while (possibly) somewhat far-removed from today's standards of living is what drives the story forward. The conditions described are both deplorable an' fascinating, an' anyone who thinks slavery ended in 1865 would be greatly challenged by the childhood stories recounted by Anne Moody. One'a the most vivid to me being her description of the chicken factory she worked at in New Orleans. There's no traditional arc here either an' no false hope, possibly because it was published in 1968 at the height of social unrest, but I wouldn't call it a downer either. Its as straightforward as it gets; tumultuous, surreal at times, filled with disillusion an' ultimate uncertainty. But, you will be better for having explored it. I've passed it on to several friends and (if I ever get it back) I intend to read it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This book is so clearly written and so interesting that I wanted to read on and on. Every so often I would stop and think that the storyline is so good and then I would remember that it's a true story which would further amaze me. I would forget that I am actually reading it for history class. We've always heard of the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but this gives us the story of one female activist who was in action during that time. We learn in more detail about how some of the less mentioned people in history conducted protests and sit ins and strived towards uniting African Americans to gain equality. The life story of Anne Moody is sure to keep you interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing account of history
If you want to understand truly the insanity of the prejudice in the south, this book is the truth. Written from a woman who lived it and fought for her freedom and that of her race. It is difficult to read at times. I had to put it down in disgust at the hatred and cruelty that white men have shown to Blacks in our country. It is so well written and should be used as a historical novel in English classes in our schools. Moody had so much courage at such a young age. Pass this one on. Use it in book clubs. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. American History
Great Book. I had to read it for my History Class, my mom later read it and loved it.

This is American History, everyone should read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A short trip to the Yoknapatawpha County
Last year, when I was assinged a report on the author William Faulkner, I knew nothing about him.I went to my school's library and checked out over 10 books.Out of the 6 non-fiction books that I checked out on the subject, this was the most complete, informative, and easy-to-understand.If it was not for this book, I doubt that I ever would have completed my Term Paper.

I highly recamend this book to anybody looking to learn about the life of one of america's most universal writers during the 1920s up until the early 60s. ... Read more

The University of Mississippi, also known as OleMiss, is a public, coeducational research university located in Oxford, Mississippi. Founded in 1848, the school is composed of the main campus in Oxford and three branch campuses located in Booneville, Tupelo, andSouthaven. Sixty-nine percent of undergraduates are from Mississippi, and nineteen percent of all students are minorities. International students come from sixty-six nations. The University got its nickname "Ole Miss"via a contest in 1897. That same year, the student yearbookwas being published for the first time. As a way to finda name for the book, a contest was held to solicit suggestions from the student body. Elma Meek, a student at the time, submitted the winning entry of Ole Miss.Interestingly, the term "Ole Miss" is not derived from Mississippi, butwas a term of respect used by slaves for the wife of aplantation owner ... "Ste-e-e-e-amboat's a'comin!"

As a boy, Samuel Clemens loved it when a steamboat traveled up or down the Mississippi River to his town of Hannibal, Missouri. He'd run to the river bank and stare longingly at the boat that looked like a floating wedding cake, wishing he could be one of the lucky passengers or crew. As a young man, Clemens made his dream come true by working his way up to steamboat pilot. When the Civil War temporarily stopped the steamboats, Sam went west, where he began writing funny stories for newspapers. He signed one story "Mark Twain," a river term meaning two fathoms deep. It was a name he would eventually make famous through his lectures and books, the most popular of which were based on his boyhood days on the banks of the Mississippi. Mark Twain's life was curiously entwined with the Mississippi River and the majestic age of the steamboats. With a lively narrative sprinkled with quotes from Twain himself and dramatic panoramic paintings, Cheryl Harness has created fascinating portraits of America's biggest river and the great man it inspired. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars don't MISS-issippi out on an excellent book!
I am (the state of) of Mississippi bound, in retirement, in remarriage. I was suppose to read Mark Twain when I was school aged but like many, gave up reading because I could not master the lingo. I am now experiencing my own "crash course" in what I "missed out" on when it was expected of me. The first time I saw the Mississippi river was during the 1966 airline strike when we went to Houston, Texas via train and crossed the river at St. Louis. At the age of 12, I was more excited about the "arch" than the river, growing up in the vicinity of The Hudson River, The Delaware River, and Schuylkill River I took for granted its majesty. I got to view it once again, just prior to "Katrina" the same year as, when I flew to Tunica, Ms., and saw it at Memphis. I have been flying over it regularly since Christmastime 2008 and appreciate it even more as my future brothers-in-law are Captains aboard tug/barges! When my fiancee took me to New Orleans, got to see The Natchez. This is not suppose to be about me, but the book, but I wanted to share with a perspective buyer of this book, my "background" as to why the "draw" to this book. I have perused many a book being a Children's Librarian, and I must say, the artwork and the diagrams in this book are excellent. It is written equally as well. I suggest it as a supplement and required reading BEFORE someone reads any of Samuel Clements/Mark Twain's writings as it would be most helpful and may entreat a student as I was, to give the writings a
chance! If this book would help one student, it is not in vain!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool
We enjoyed the way this book took us on a journey through time."Mark Twain and the Queens of the Mississippi" carried us from the village of Cahokia to our modern time.We were intrigued by thehistorical details given in the form of graphs, charts, diagrams, andfactual information.Harness vividly outlined the advances in ourtechnology. We liked the realistic descriptions given in the book.Thedetailed descriptions did tend to slow down the reader's attention attimes. It was rather emotional reading about tragedies that have happenedin our countries history. These events may be disturbing to some readers. The pictures in the book were realistic, artistic, breathtaking, disturbing, and colorful. The artwork contributed powerful meaning to thestory. The illustrations helped readers understand the details andlanguage of the story. We recommend this book to anyone interested inlearning about the Mississippi River, steamboats, or Mark Twain.Mrs.Scott's 7th period sixth grade reading class rates this book with 4 stars. Please read this book and enjoy the wonderful illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Twain's classic
Once again Devin and his pal-for-life-even-if-she-is-a-girl Francine "Frankie" Lang find them ill-prepared for a literature test. They decide to once again use the library's mysterious zapper gates to get them into the story---which just happens to be The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Once again the two find themselves swept up into Twain's classic. Both soon find out that Tom is pretty much like them, a troublemaker. Soon they hook up with Tom's longtime pal Huck Finn and soon the four are swept up into their own adventures, such as whitewashing fences, pretending to be pirates, attending their own funerals, and most important, they witness a murder while visiting the graveyard at midnight. Can they bring the true person to justice? This was another great Cracked Classics. They are nice for young children and might encourage them later in life to read the actrull classic! ...
