Product Description
St. Louis' story stands for the story of all those cities whose ambitions and civic self-image, forged from the growth of the mercantile and industrial eras, have been dramatically altered over time. More dramatically, perhaps, than most but in a manner shared by all St. Louis' changing economic base, shifting population, and altered landscape have forced scholars, policymakers, and residents alike to acknowledge the transiency of what once seemed inexorable metropolitan trends: concentration, growth, accumulated wealth, and generally improved well-being. In this book, Eric Sandweiss scrutinizes the everyday landscape streets, houses, neighborhoods, and public buildings as it evolved in a classic American city.Bringing to life the spaces that most of us pass without noticing, he reveals how the processes of dividing, trading, improving, and dwelling upon land are acts that reflect and shape social relations. From its origins as a French colonial settlement in the eighteenth century to the present day, "St Louis" offers a story not just about how our past is diagramed in brick and asphalt, but also about the American city's continuing viability as a place where the balance of individual rights and collective responsibilities can be debated, demonstrated, and adjusted for generations to come. Author note: Eric Sandweiss is the Director of Research at the Missouri Historical Society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare combination of meticulous research and a larger vision
Eric Sandweiss has done a superb job of analyzing the physical evolution of St. Louis as seen from the perspective of one of its most stable neighborhood areas, South St. Louis. His analytical framework reflects the perspective of the great Sir Winston Churchill, who said "We shape our buildings.Thereafter, they shape us."The kind of analysis the author undertakes is similar to a book he cites in his notes, Puritan Village. But while this latter work focused on the relatively simple and stable environment of Sudbury, MA, over a relatively short period of time, Sandweiss covers virtually the entire history of St. Louis. For most of his book, he focuses on a detailed analysis of several representative blocks of South St. Louis, including demographics, house styles, and block-by-block development patterns, to demonstrate how neighborhood character and composition change over time. This is truly original work. But his last two chapters, comprising a little over 50 pages, present a powerful summation of the growth and decline of the city in the 20th century. Many of his observations reflect the evolution of most American cities over time, making a transition from a kinship-based to an association-based pattern of development, evolving from a ward-healer pattern of government to one emphasizing professional management principles, etc.His indictment of city planning as practiced in St. Louis is just devastating, particularly the work of Harland Bartholomew. My only quibble is that he does not offer a plausible alternative to the pattern of centralization and professionalization of city government that occurred.Would St. Louis have avoided its precipitous decline if it had retained a dispersed, neighborhood-based type of government?Or, could its leaders, beginning with the Progressive Era, have guided the city in a more positive direction?Nevertheless, Eric Sandweiss has contributed a powerful analysis of how St. Louis grew, developed, and declined over time.

1-0 out of 5 stars The most irritating style of "educational writing"
While I'm sure this author is very knowledgeable in the area of Urban renewal, history, etc- he wrote a book that shares his knowledge with no one.His style of writing is that which uses unnecessarily big words in unnecessarily complicated ways, forcing the reader to reread each paragraph 4 times and still not understand what the heck the point is. This is the type of book which might be on a suggested book list for a college course, but everyone hates it because even if you suffer through it and manage to 'read' the whole thing, you will walk away with a very small understanding of the material inside. If the author would just speak his mind and explain his thoughts, it would be a great book. However, he jumbles up his sentences and paragraphs so horridly, trying to make himself appear intelligent, that everyone finds this book frustrating and a waste of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent First Attempt at Russian History Atlas
There are several atlases on Russian History with a deeply held Anti-Russian Bigotry in their text as well as maps.

Among all the atlases such as those by the malicious Martin Gilbert (court historian of the marxist establishment and a deceitful anti-slav anti-russian bigot) and by Allen Chew's (another virulent anti-Russian tirade), this attempt by Hudson and Channon is somewhat less bigoted and hostile.

The maps are clear and well designed and colors are beautifully used to give clarity.

There are a few shortfalls in this atlas which the authors and publishers might consider for their revised edition:

On page 23 the conversion of Vladimir from paganism to christianity can be depicted at Cherson in Crimea. Baptism of Rus is a very significant moment in Russian History and should be included in any atlas on Russian history

On page 39 the Crimean Khanate is missing and so is the Great Horde which was distinct from other hordes. The Tokhtmysh-Timur war which was fought in part on Russian territory is also missing from the maps.

Similarly, the Cossacks should also be depicted on page 39 as they had arrived on the scene by late 16th century and were raiding the Crimean Marauders and the Ottoman Empire's coastal strongholds.

Eastward expansion on Russia is poorly shown and is missing the great explorers such as Moskvitin and Dezhnev on page 50(small map) and page 55 (big map). For this, the authors and publisher should refer to Colin McEvedy's atlas of the pacific. His map on Russian exploration in Asia is much more lively, detailed and engaging.

Also, a map depicting Russia's interactions with Tokugawa Japan and Joseon Korea since the time of Peter the Great are missing, these could be included on or after page 55 in a separate map. Another fascinating map could show Russian explorers and their travels to middle-east and India from Caspian Sea and astrakhan after Ivan the terrible's victory.

A separate map showing Religious life, saints and Monastaries on the map, and the extent of serfdom in different russian regions from 17th to 19th century can also be shown.

Despite all these shortcomings I would say this is one of the less biased and bigoted atlases available on amazon.

2-0 out of 5 stars I expected better of Penguin
Being interested in the historical expansion of Russia across Asia, I had high hopes for this book, since it was produced by the same publisher that gave us the excellent historical atlases of Europe and North America. However, unlike Colin McEvedy's invaluable works, I think this book was unfocused, convoluted and sloppy.

Where McEvedy's works were the epitome of conciseness, and could cover a half century's worth of continental-wide geopolitical change in a single page, this purported historical_atlas_of Russian history is crammed full of photos, cartoons, paintings and page after page of unnecessary text. Rejecting the brilliant simplicity of McEvedy's books, whose method was to generally show a snapshot of the political map in a single year, with accompanying text explaining the changes since the previous map, this book often shows hundreds of years worth of overlapping border changes on a single map, with different colored arrows- representing military campaigns- snaking their way through the resulting mishmash. The effect is often utter confusion.

Certain important subjects are given short shrift while comparatively insignificant areas receive inordinate attention. Russian expansion into Asia is dealt with by a single very, very bad map, and while the maps dealing with the expansion into the Caucuses and "the Stans" are ok, the explanatory text is unsatisfactorily cursory. Conversely, we are given much information on the location of various factories and industries within Russia, as well as maps of Moscow and the Sevastopol battlefield. The layout of the book is chronologically deranged as well. Can anyone explain to me why you would have a map of 1930s Europe, then have an entire chapter dealing with the history of the 20th century USSR until its dissolution, and_then_throw in a mere 2 maps on WWII? Similarly, why would you have a page with a map on the breakup of the USSR, and_then_finish the book with a chapter on Khrushchev's agricultural policies?? It just doesn't make sense.

You can learn from this book. It has some good maps and some good information. However, "some" is he operative word. Too much dross and too little editing spoiled what could have been a very useful work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Russia - 5, Early Russia - 3
As a long time student of history, I've been delighted by the relatively recent growth in popularity of the Historical Atlas.Studying the cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and China or Medieval England, France and Germany and others is much easier for me when I've got plenty of date sensitive maps to refer to, giving geographical context to ebb and flow of events over time.

But I guess I've been spoiled when studying works about these other cultures, where there seems to be plenty of information about what went on in the distant past.It seems we can uncover the nick-name of the king's dentist when we're studying ancient Egypt. But I'm increasingly frustrated when it comes to my efforts to study the more distant portions of Russia's past, and this book, I must admit, was no exception. While providing excellent coverage of the more recent/modern chapters of Russia's past, this book, like every other history of Russia I've been able to find, seems to suggest that we just don't know much about the early stages of Russian history.

I'm glad to have the few maps on Early Russia that this book provides. They do add some helpful map based context to other works I've read, and that's always appreciated. But the more I study Russia, the more I'm convinced that if you're a historian or archaeologist and want to pursue a field where there's still a LOT of history to be uncovered ... try Russia on for size. The challenge will be considerable ... but so's the opportunity.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best available historical atlas of Russia
I have been teaching the history of Russia at Cornel University for many years and have never found a completely satistfactory hisitorical atlas. Channon's work is defintely the best available. The maps are in color and deal with most of the main issues. A notable omission is a map showing the climatic zones which moulded the life of the Russian people.

4-0 out of 5 stars "A USA Today-styled" approach to Russian history
The Penguin Historical Atlases are a great resource for those that are newto countries or perhaps are somewhat younger readers. In John Channon's version of Russian history, you'll find a concise, colorful and informativecollection of articles spanning Russia's origins, the Tatars andestablishment of imperial rule, through the Revolution, reforms andrestructuring of the 20th Century. In a way it resembles something of acompilation of articles from a good illustrated encyclopedia.

The appealof the volume is in it's size, illustrations and charts- I think of it as akind of annotated "table of contents" to Russian history. It's a greatresource to get the basic synopsis of a period, person or event that youcan then take to a larger volume for greater detail. If you are looking fora great coffee table book or in depth Russian history, this isn't it.

Asa neophyte to all things Russian, I found this to be the attractiveappetizer that inspired me to really delve into Russian history andaffairs.

While visiting a friend a few years ago in Siberia, he wasstruck by the readability, illustrations and usefulness of my copy-- yes, Ibrought it with me... He loved it so much, that I just had to leave it withhim when I left.I now have purchased my second copy.

It's a greatlittle introduction to Russia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Contemporary Pacific and Australian groups
I used this book as a text for my universitylevel Cultures of Oceania class, an introduction to the Pacific and Australia. This was an excellent introduction for students having no knowledge of the area. It gave them a wide, comprehensive view of the many challenges faced by contemporary Pacific and Australian Koori peoples. It provided thought provoking issues that engaged my students and encouraged them to think about communities outside of their locality.

Each chapter is written by a different scholar, introducing the cultural area, the people and their interaction with foreign forces. It frames up the most pertinate issues and the people's reactions and solutions to the foreign influences. Each chapter provides a series of questions to provoke reflective thought, a list of websites and related videos. I plan to use this book again this semester, it is a very useful and informative resource. ... Read more

Flora of the Venezuelan Guayana, Volume 1

This volume commences publication of a multivolume flora that is the first full scientific account of the plants of a botanically rich and geologically ancient part of northern South America, the Venezuelan Guayana. This area is dominated by massive table mountains, tepuis, that tower over surrounding rain forest and savannas and provide a wealth of habitats for nearly 10,000 species of vascular plants.

Volume 1 is a general introduction to the southeastern half of Venezuela that encompasses the flora area, with chapters on geography, history of botanical exploration, vegetation types, endemism, and conservation.Keys to the families of seed plants are also provided.Volume 2 begins the alphabetical sequence of family treatments, first within the ferns and their allies, then followed by the initial 11 families of seed plants.Keys, descriptions, and illustrations of more than half the species treated - a feature rarely found in floras of even more familiar areas - make this work an enduring reference that will be useful far beyond the borders of the region now carefully documented.Nine volumes are anticipated for publication of the complete flora.

More than 180 botanists from around the world have collaborated on this project, which is based at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Product Description
"A Traveller's History of Germany" offers a complete and authoritative history of a country of which much of its rich past and legacy of great culture has been forgotten after the traumas of the two world wars. There were Germans long before there was Germany. Germanic peoples lived for centuries in Western, Central and Eastern Europe with similar yet not identical languages and culture. Over time these developed into regional principalities and city states under the nominal rule of first the Roman Empire, then the Holy Roman Empire, and finally the Habsburg Empire. German unification did not come until 1871 under Bismarck. Germany became a world power, fuelled not only by industrialisation but also by a new ideology of nationalism, a power that took on the rest of the world twice in the twentieth century and lost. Since 1945 it has risen from the ashes to become a major force - of a more palatable kind - within Europe. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too detailed for a traveler
I expected this book to give a brief history of the larger cities in Germany. It turned out to be a history book with too much detail.I had planned to take the book with me to Germany for references, but gave it away instead.I would label this book "A brief history of Germany", too long for travelers.

3-0 out of 5 stars LONG
A good, consise history of Germany, but can be a little daunting to read.Reads more like one of my lawschool textbooks than a history of a country.Oh well, it makes up for that in the level of detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Comprehensive History
This is an excellent introductory German history for the newcomer, and a good review for the history student. The book wastes no pages. Even though the information on each subject is brief and to the point, this small paperback of roughly 325 pages seems to cover EVERYTHING from the earliest days to 2006. It assumes no previous study of German history, so you won't have to look up random surnames referencing people the author expects you to be familiar with. The book has a complete list of rulers from the Holy Roman Empire (beginning with Karl die Grosse) to the Democratic Republic, a chronology of major events, and maps for every major period (12 total). Based on my search for texts on German history in English, I can say that this small volume contains more information than can be found in the somewhat popular history by Hagen Schultze, which is also available on Amazon. If German history remotely interests you, this is where to begin.

PS: This book is the closest thing to what I have been looking for, a huge 500+ page or so complete history of Germany in English. If anyone knows if such a thing exists, please post a comment for this review. Thank you. ... Read more

Product Description
What is it about Western society, ask the authors, that makes it possible for people to express great affection for animals as sentient creatures and simultaneously turn a blind eye to the most callous behavior toward them? Animals are sold as expensive commodities, used as food and clothing, killed as vermin, and hunted for sport. But they also are treated as members of the family, used as the cause celebre of social movements, and made the subject of art, film, and poetry. Such contradictions motivate these unique ethnographers to venture into social worlds most people know about only in passing, such as veterinary clinics where companion animals are cared for, animal shelters where dogs and cats are 'mercifully' euthanized, and primate labs where monkeys are kept for animal experimentation.Arluke and Sanders are not distanced ethnographers. They worked in the clinics, shelters, and laboratories, cleaning cages, assisting in surgery, and participating in "sacrificing" animals for science or helping to provide them with an 'easy death.'In this book, the people who work with these animals and live through them talk to the authors about the strategies they adopt to cope with the stress of the job. This fascinating book combines sociological analysis with ethnographic description to give us insight into the history and practice of how we as human beings construct animals, and by extrapolation, how we construct ourselves and others in relation to them.Arnold Arluke is Professor of Sociology at Northeastern University and a Research Associate at the Center for Animals and Public Policy at Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine. He is an Associate Editor of Society and Animals and the author of "The Making of Rehabilitation: A Political Economy of Medical Specialization" with Glenn Gritzer and "Gossip: The Inside Scoop with Jack Levin". REGARDING ANIMALS, Arnold Arluke and Clinton Sanders, Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1996, 218pp.

Regarding Animals, by Arnold Arluke and Clinton Sanders, explores the special symbiosis that exists between human animals and non-human animals. Theirs is a sociological exploration navigated by their skills in ethnography that ventures them into cultural frontiers seldom seen and therefore left uncharted by sociological experts. For Arluke and Sanders, fieldwork took place wherever human-animal interaction was likely to occur, "the pet store, circus, riding stables, and countless other settings where animals play a part" (p. 19). This interaction united them with "exotic tribes" they identified as "pet owners, veterinarians, animal trainers, slaughterhouse workers, mounted policemen, and any other group that works with or cares for animals..." (p. 19). Arluke and Sanders attempt to record what was happening in these places and to articulate the meanings that animals have for people. Traditional sociological ethnography was the framework utilized for the authors' research. Their job as sociologists was to identify some of the social forces that are behind the inconsistent treatment of animals and to show how they work. Their ultimate goal was to convincingly argue the merits of sociological analysis in popular and scholarly discussions about animals in Western cultures. The purpose of Regarding Animals is to dissect how humans regard animals in modern Western societies.

The book's format divides its discourse into two sections. Part one, "The Human-Animal Tribe," discusses a myriad of issues ranging from studying the social construction of animals to understanding ethnography to recognizing the existence of the non-human animal "mind." Particularly striking was Arluke and Sanders' rhetoric on social constructs. They regard the social construction of animals to be the meanings that animals have for cultures, and, consequently, determine them to be dependent upon the variables of place and time. Then, after a discussion of the criticisms of ethnography, the authors move on to the animal "mind," which can only be described as a modern paradigm drama. Arluke and Sanders testify to the "mind's" existence, and consequently refute conventional positivistic assumptions by reasoning that the animal "mind" is capable of more than just capricious, instinctual thought response.

In the next section, Living with Contradiction, ethnography plays a key role. The authors infiltrate the world of animal shelter workers, animal trainers, primate labs, and the history of Nazi Germany. The chapter entitled The Sociozoologic Scale was particularly compelling. The scale ranks animals "according to how well they seem to `fit in' and play the roles they are expected to play in society" (p. 169). Arluke and Sanders deduce that society constructs good animals and bad animals. They discuss the latter as being characterized as freaks, vermin, and demons. Good animals, characterized as pets and tools, included minority groups that, according to the majority's perspective, seem to accept their subordinate role in society and are patronizingly treated like children. This same society has a tendency to treat pets and children very similarly. Therein, the authors infer that this is the reason why society finds it easy to dehumanize minorities like women, blacks, children, the elderly, and the mentally challenged to the status of animal when using descriptive language about them. The discussion on animals as valued tools was also very compelling. Here they recalled the infamous Tuskegee experiment where more than four hundred blacks were unknowingly infected with syphilis and subjected to forty years of suffering with no treatment. These people were dehumanized to the subhuman level of a tool or guinea pig.

The only fault of Regarding Animals lies in some of the excerpts used from interviews. The responses appear staged. And, although I am convinced that people would feel these things, I only question the lack of vernacular used by those respondents who talk about their pet.

Regarding Animals takes an informative yet critical look at society's relationship with animals. They expose the "constant paradox" (p. 4) defined as the consistent inconsistency of human's emotions toward animals, like advocating the vivisection of a dog as long as it was not their pet. Arluke and Sanders' fieldwork gives the reader access to places, like research laboratories and veterinary hospitals, that permit a broader understanding of our four legged friends that we worship and who sometimes worship us.

Subcultures like pet owners, veterinary personnel, and breeders have always had a greater perspective of the dynamics of human-animal symbiosis. It is only within the crucible of academe that the "mind," social influence, and the pragmatics of animals have been omitted from discussions. Arnold Arluke and Clinton Sanders are determined to increase our knowledge and question our values regarding animals. This book is an asset to anyone interested in deconstructing myths we have made that separate us from the wet nosed companion nestled by our feet.

Golly gosh, this was the best book on animals I ever read.I immediately went out and bought a little parrot after reading it, who only says one thing: "I love jesus, I love jesus."

5-0 out of 5 stars Factual, interesting and informative - a gripping read.
An excellent book covering many aspects of our interaction with non-humananimals.Packed with information, interesting examples and a wonderfullyuseful bibliography, I couldn't put it down.A real shame there's not morebooks like this, as a student of human-animal interaction I could have donewith reading something as comprehensive as this years ago.I particularlyliked the application of symbolic interactionist theory to this area ofstudy. ... Product Description

First published in 1956, Leonard Hall’s affectionate chronicle of the round of the seasons on a working farm in the eastern Missouri Ozarks is now available in a quality paperback reprint. These beautifully written essays on country sights, sounds, customs, animals, and people will have great appeal to a new generation of readers who are discovering the joys of rural self-sufficiency. Older readers will rejoice at the opportunity to renew their acquaintance with Len and Ginnie Hall and their adventures on Possum Trot Farm.

Hall, a naturalist and a newspaperman, describes such homely farm chores as dehorning a calf so clearly that one paragraph teaches just how the work is done. His accounts of the events that mark the changing seasons—migrating geese, budding trees, hunting, fishing, butchering, and simply walking through fields and woods—are remarkable for their unpretentious nostalgic beauty.

“Leonard Hall is a mid-Twentieth Century Thoreau…There is nothing ponderous or pontifical in his writing. It is direct and clear as befits the surroundings in which he works and writes. When his musings lead him to express opinion about farm policy, or man’s relation to the land, he doesn’t labor the point but gives it to you short and sharp. It comes on you like a pepper-ball in a mouthful of the country sausage he temptingly describes.”—Chester C. Davis, foreword, first edition, Country Year

4-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable look at farming and respect for the land
A JOURNAL OF THE SEASONS ON AN OZARK FARM, Leonard Hall, University of Missouri Press, Columbia, MO, 1980, 208 pgs., pb $9.95 Before I came to the Ozarks I knew next to nothing about life in rural America. What I knew of farming would fit on a diet plate of vegetables, which came, of course, from the store, not the farm. What I knew of country folk was what I learned from Andy Taylor and Hee Haw.After five yearsof living in the hills of Shannon County, I've learned quite a bit. Knowledge came from talking to my neighbors, attending auctions, and from walking the dirt road behind my house in the evenings with my wife Julie and Rio the dog. Lately, a great deal was taught to me by well known Ozark writer Leonard Hall in his book A Journal of the Seasons on an Ozark Farm. Hall wrote the Current River saga Stars Upstream and was a regular columnist for the St Louis Post Dispatch. His narrative of a single year intrigues the reader with a simple yet subtle narrative of a life on his farm, "Possum Tro ... Read more
