Great examples - but the steps to get there aren't well laid out.
Let me start out saying that Pat Covert is a great modeller.

His concept of the the book is good but the steps to get to the implied results are a bit thin. Instructions of what tools to use and how to use them is good but not excellent. Pictoral examples of how to use them aren't consistant. Painting instruction and how to achieve a quality finish and polish that finish is good.

The text areas are a bit too dense and the pictures, while outstanding in size and quality, are in large groupings. Captions chould be more in-depth and instructional - what tools were used, tricks, short-cuts and other examples/variations would have made a good book great.

One thing that stood out - Clay Kemp's Dodge Craftsmen truck series section. Outstanding example of research, detailing, and execution. The Photos are excellent. I actually thought the pics on Pages 84-85 were 1:1 scale research photos! Outstanding Mr. Kemp!

Cover the basics, and more.
This book is great for learning the basics of modeling. I also covers some advanced techniques like weathering and heavy decaling. I will say that the first model I built and painted after reading this book surpassed any of my previous models in detail and quality.

The best tips and guides book
I've been a modeler for some time, but I've never found good literature that explained and gives tips of how to do something different.

It solved many problems that I have once had while building a model car!!

A great book for anyone who is looking to improve his/her skills.

Collection Of The 3 Pat Covert Books
If you have the Basics of Scale Automotive Modeling: Getting Started in the Hobby,The Modeler's Guide to Scale Automotive Finishes,Building Better Scale Model Cars and Trucks: Detailing Tips and Techniques books from the same author, there is no need to buy this book.
This book is a collection of these three books with some little new tips.
The book has many good information and tecniques for the car modeler and saves money for 3 in 1 book price.Recomended

Spend lots of $$ for shortcuts, rather than learn it for yourself
There is some good how-to info for basic building and example models, but not enough in depth info how they were created, apart from buying 3rd party "add-ons". The problem with the book is that it is mostly about winning modeling contest. Compared to the Camaro project in the Badger Modeling Guide to Air Brushing, which is "from the box", this book is largely about short cuts, rather than improving one's overall modeling skills. ... This Book Is Awsome
I got this book and I am in the process of building this model railroad. The book takes you step by step as you build your railroad it is very easy. I am going to have an awsome model railroad when I am finished

Great reference for beginners, simple instructions, covers all the basics of building a layout.
I really like this book in that is gives simple, straight forward instructions on how to build your first model railroad layout.It covers every area involved in building a layout.I think the most useful part for me, was all the info on how to do scenery.I refer back to these sections all the time.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get started in model railroading.It does a good job of covering, wiring, scenery, and basic structure building.

I do have a few problems with the book, but they should not discourage you from buying the book, just things to keep in mind.They show you how to build the layout out of foam core board.This is good in that you do not have to have any carpentry skills, but is not going to be very durable.If you are going to spend this much time an effort to build something, it should hold up for a while.Also I feel the track plan puts too much into too small of a space.It does allow you to run 2 trains at once which is nice, but it has a tunnel area with no access to the train if you have a derailment in the tunnel.

I say buy the book for the instructions, find a different track plan, and use traditional benchwork for the base of layout.

How to for Beginners
Really rates four and one half stars, the missing half star because a small amount of out of date material recommended in construction.

For the beginner who needs a hand-holding step by step guide to building a first layout, from basic to more complex, this book is the one to choose. Simplicity and use of common materials is stressed. I wish the authors would update this volume, for I would be first in line to buy it.

Great Beginner
This is a very good book from going from nothing about N scale railroading tothe basic beginner. I'm trying to copy step by step to get the feel of model railroading and this is a very good book to start. The instructions are basic but attainable the graphics are great.

Great Starter Book
Bought this when I was getting back to N Scale model railroading after a 30 year hiatus.It is an excellent book. Has many innovations that I never would have thought about and have not seen described elsewhere: like, making the benchwork out of foam core! Followed their directions and now have an extremely light weight, durable, layout. Another positive element is the title's theme: a model railroad that grows. The authors start with a simple layout with simple scenery, allowing the modeler to begin railroad operations very quickly. The book then moves through several phased projects, allowing railroad operations to become more complex without having to wait for the entire project to be completed before beginning to enjoy the fruits of your labor.It is not helpful on wiring the layout or converting locomotives for DCC operations, but those details are available elsewhere including very useful online forums.A great book for the beginner. ... Only for utter, absolute beginners!
This book is perfect as a gift for kids who wish to start out in a/c modelling. It covers the absolute basics, and should get them up and running in no time.

However, the a/c covered in the book are of ancient kits, most of them from the 60's-70's. Technology and standards have improved by loads since then. How one is expected to procure them now is anybody's guess. If the author had taken up some of the recent kits, and showed his stuff, it would have been more useful.

Also, most of the techniques covered in the book are more than available in any of the good modelling sites on the Net now. So I don't see any reason why an intermediate modeler should put his money in this book. Ashey's two books cover most of this stuff and more, and are definitely my rerefences of choice, than this one.

Good, but very basic...
This is a good book but it is very basic. It tries to use specific models building projects to show techniques.I like the way it starts with a basic snap-together F-117 and goes up to major modification of an existing kit.Unfortunately it doesn't go deep enough into each kit to really show the techniques.On the plus side, the photography is great and mostly in color.I would recommend this if you are just getting started but I think anything beyond that would be disappointed.

Good Book, especially for new modelers
This book has several projects. Each one increases in difficulty. If you'rnew to this hobby, this is a great book. You learn what tools andtechniques are needed to produce good-looking models. An experiencedmodeler probably knows alot of the info in this books already. Only one,small chapter is dedicated to display so don't expect anything stellar inthat area. All in all an interesting book on everyones favorite hobby.

Misnamed slightly - but good book on basic modelling
We bought this expecting it to be MAINLY about techniques and ideas for display.Instead, there is actually more building advice than displaying advice.It's a good book for beginners, and has some great pics - we lovethe Blue Angels hanging display - but it is NOT even 1/4 about display, inmy opinion.

Step by step guide to building great models
The book is organized in chapters where one begins by assembling a snap-together type of model aircraft. From there it goes on to building an out-of-the box standard kit, then adding special features like resin parts,metal etched parts. Really useful tips and tricks are given throughout thebook which can be read in one afternoon - large typeface, nice b&wpictures, some color pictures.

Good starter book
This book is 90% black and white with a color photo gallery in the back.

I flipped through this book many times.It is a great helper.

It is a good starter book with a mix of old and modern emergency vehicle "how tos."This book got me interested in modeling emergency vehicles.

Book covers how to make: * Lightbar mounts * Searchlights * Radio antennaes * Shotgun mounts * Improve plastic and resin kits exterior and interiors * Model conversions * Lower SUV chassis * Other modeler's "how to" builds

A short list of mail-order companies is included but for more listings, one should go to discussion groups if you are a true fan of modeling emergency vehicles.

One part I find lacking from this book is the old magician's belief "Don't give away all your secrets."I wished the book told more of how that guy did this or that.The book has photos of what modelers did but isn't very descriptive of how they did it or where they got the parts.That's one "how to" the modeler must figure out for himself.Also, no price is given for completed model and if one starts down the modeling path, it can get pretty expensive mail-ordering all the needed items to make an emergency vehicle model.

Side note:Emergency vehicle modeling can get pretty expensive because as the book shows, the details, decals, and items are often not available in kits (or ONE kit) you can find in toy stores and hobby shops.You must mail-order from several companies.

A "must have" if anyone wants to start modeling emergency vehicles.I also recommend buying Motorbooks on the vehicle subjects too for color reference.

Very Disappointing
This book contains very little healthcare specific code information. During my first round flipping through the book, I did not manage to notice any information on healthcare code issues. Upon further inspection, I did manage to find a few healthcare related items... but nothing even close to being useful - or worth the price of the book, for that matter.

This book seems to be simply a repackaging of the book "Building Codes Illustrated," by some of the same authors - which I own as well. The table of contents for both books are nearly identical. Non of the chapters have anything healthcare related in their titles. Most of the graphics appear to be straight out of "Building Codes Illustrated" as well. The index contains more references to subjects such as "brick expansion joints," "cripple studs," and "concrete piles" than it does to anything healthcare specific. Disappointing, to say the least.

Review of Model Railroader's Guide to Locomotive Servicing Terminals
This book is a invaluable reference and great "how to" guide for any model railroader who is planning to include a locomotive servicing and fueling facility on his layout.After presenting information on the procedures, equipment and structures actually used by the railroads to maintain their locomotives, the book goes on to show how models of this equipment and these structures can be constructed for a model railroad.

Good start for ideas....
This book was a quick read for me and it did have some good ideas for modeling locomotive servicing facilities. However, the focus is more on steam than diesel facilities, so I was left feeling a bit short changed. It gave some good prototype information, but then going to the train room or layout for actual model building was not enough for me. The last section on building the diesel terminal was good, but again, when I turned that last page expecting more, and then hit the supplier and manufacturer list. There were some good ideas that Marty McGuire did offer up, such as working a roundhouse into a backdrop. Overall it is a good book, but it just scrapes the surface and left me wanting more. I guess that's Kalmbach's plan, wanting you to buy another book.
The book would have gotten 5 stars from me if it had more in the way of modeling information.

A Good Resource
Modeling trains allows the opportunity to put together a lot of fascinating machinery and buildings. People who like to build models tend to like to do that sort of thing and the instructions that come with the models are usually adequate. Unfortunately, that can leave a modeler with a really neat gizmo that he or she does not really understand in the great scheme of things. A nice sanding tower may be built but, once built, the modeler may have no idea about how it would be used in real life or where it would be most appropriate on a layout. This book explains things like that.

It does its explaining both in terms of steam and in terms of diesel equipment. It explains how real railroads operated to turn trains. Along the way, it also gives some good modeling tips.

Useful Guide
As with most books of this type, this is an extremely useful guide.Photos are crisp and text is well-detailed.Any modeler interested in modeling a free-lance engine terminal will find this a valuable resource. ... Read more
