A poorly researched book with factual and other errors
Sadly, this is one of the very few books with information on this part of the world - and it gets many facts wrong. This book is obvoiusly aimed at the K-12 market, and aims to function as a primer on this region.Unfortunately, it fails.

* Ukrainian place names are invariably given inRussian instead of Ukrainian (for example, Kyiv is spelled Kiev in thisbook).

* Moldovan place names are either not spelled correctly - e.g."Belsiy" for Balti, or given in Russian - e.g."Kishinev" for Chisinau.

* Country names are not accurate - forexample, the German Democratic Republic is labeled as "EastGermany".

* Information on these countries' ethnic minorities isshallow. The Gagauz and Bulgarian minorities in Moldova are simply labeledas "other", and the percentage of the pie chart given to these"others" is wrong (13 per cent instead of approximately 4 percent).

* Finally, many other details are wrong. For example, Moldova isdescribed as having "abundant natural resources and well-developedindustries", when in fact Moldova imports nearly all of its power andnatural resources, and has virtually no developed industry save for somedecaying factories in the Trans-Dniestr Republic.

Tries to be unbiased and neutral
Charles King, the author of the book, is an assistant professor in the School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government at Georgetown University. Funding for the research on which this book is based, was provided at various stages by the British Marshall Commemoration Commission, in the form of a British Marshal Scholarsip; St. Antony's College and New College, Oxford; the Social Science Research Council, via a Graduate Training Fellowship; and Georgetown University, through the Ion Ratiu Chair of Romanian Studies, to which the author was elected in 1996. Although the author tries to be unbiased and wants to keep neutral point of view, the book somewhat reflects the point of view supported by the organizations above mentioned, and also by the official political point of view of Western countries towards the Republic of Moldova (RM) at a time of writing of this book, although the archival and library resources used by the author were located mainly in Romania and RM. The major sources of information were The Central Historical Archive Division of the National Archives of Romania in Bucharest; the former archive of the Communist Party of Moldova (now renamed to the Archive of Social-Political Organizations of the Republic of Moldova); as well as other sources.

Excellently Written
Charles King's "The Moldovans" is an excellently written history of a little known East European borderland and its intriguing people. While its physical appearance and membership in the Hoover Institute's old "Nationalities of the USSR" series may indicate dry and rigid academic work, it is certainly not.
King here has written an interesting history of the Bessarabian/Moldovan people, the first in English, through the context of nation and national identity building. History buffs and area enthusiasts will find themselves enjoying the blend of history, politics and more recent events within newly independent Moldova. For an introduction and some answers to the convoluted and confusing intra-state conflict with the DMR (Transnistria), look here.
The subject could be considered college reading but the writing is clean, clear and professional at a point where you know a highly laudable individual is behind this work, but not some Cornell West writing for the benefit of his fellow academics. King's history is incredibly lucid and readable. This is good history as it should be.

Excellent book
Great detailed coverage of why the pogrom occurred, what led to it occurring, what happened while it was going on, and what the outcome was for both the victims and perpetrators.The book is a pretty small one, but it encompasses everything you need to know about this specific event in Russian history.The history of the city is given as well as the reason for why Jews were such a large part of the population.How the town was mainly run by anti-Semites and what they did to help push people over the edge and create violence toward the Jewish members of the city.Starting with the blood libel from another town which was disproved to have been the work of Jews but nonetheless held up as fact within Kishinev's newspapers which increased feelings against Jews and ending with all out violence that went unchecked until the second day when the military was given all power to handle the situation.A large portion of the city was damaged and men, women, and children were killed, raped, robbed, beaten, etc.Questions about how much was the government really involved are never clearly answered, there is evidence to support both arguments that it was and wasn't.But both are presented and the reader is given the choice of deciding on his/her own.Overall an excellent book, a quick read, and very informational and detailed. ...
