4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review
This is a very good review on the main techniques of biochemistry and molecular biology. Excellent for filling up those gaps that bad teachers left behind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tons of Info
It was more than I needed or could use. I tried to contact the seller to see if I could return it, but got no response.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok as an intro, but rather irksome
I had purchased this book as part of the required books for a molecular biology techniques class in college. While I did skim through most of it at that time, I hadn't given it my full attention.

Two years later, I've sat down and read the entire book (spare 2 chapters). My reason for doing this was to brush up on what I (hopefully) already knew, expand on my knowledge, and to catch some things I'd surely completely missed.

I do not like how the chapters are written by different authors.I suppose it makes sense in light of certain folks being experts in their respective fields... but isn't this book an intro book?Shouldn't the stuff in this book be "the basics"?I noticed that the style of writing (somewhat organization of thoughts, but mostly the tone/way of talking) varied.I also found more than one topic to be repeated in detail.Oh no, not just "refer to section ___ for more info"... nope... totally repeated.

I hate the organization of the book.I feel like the chapters are out of order. The chapters also, I feel, could have been focused differently to better tackle material.

Also, while a great deal of theory is helpful, I sure wished I'd seen some basic info included for actual benchwork.I wanted to see more of typical concentrations, troubleshooting, controls, etc.Because now I just look at this book and think, hmm... the info in that book I can get for free on the internet, probably faster and more detailed.I don't want to lug that thing around to work, etc.No way.Good for class though, I suppose. At least at the end of each chapter there is a recommendations section for further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lab books available
I was blown away by this book. That's how good it is.

I'm a microbiology grad student working on my Ph.D. and I have referred to this book on multiple occasions. It covers almost every single type of procedure that a student would do in a life science or biochemistry laboratory. From molecular biology to PCR; from Southern blots to western blots; from electrophoresis to mass spectrometry; from cell culture to microscopy.....this book literally covers it all.Additionally, it covers all of these topics in pretty good detail. Each procedure is not only discussed in terms of how to do it, but also why it works.

Fantastic.Every life science, biochemistry, or health science student should have this as a reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Concise, but brevity causes loss of glossary
I needed a primer for biochemistry and upon Amazon search with "primer biochemistry" I came across this.Honestly, it hasn't proven more helpful that the chapter 1 introduction in my textbook yet.I've given 3 stars because I've yet to see how uniquely this book has supplemented my understanding, especially since there is no glossary for all the vocabulary in bold print. If I don't get something from context, I have to go elsewhere. On the other hand, it is brief, to the point, and inexpensive so I don't rate it less.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for review, but not very much cell bio
I love this book! It's so easy to read and it provides a good review for students taking molecular biology. However, I wouldn't recommend it as a resource for someone who is just starting to learn. The writing style assumes that you know the basic concepts already and sometimes skims through material quickly. However, I would have to say that this book is very readable and contains some excellent illustrations.

However, my one complaint is the lack of coverage of cell biology. This book seems, frankly, to be almost all molecular biology. It lacks any sort of discussion about actin, microtubules, and so on. I find that disappointing, but I understand that it's a "quick outline."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for reference and quick brush-up
I bought this book so I would not have to shuffle through the pages of my cell/molucular bio textbook. Although this book was great with having the main concepts, there wasn't much detail. But that is the purpose of the book- to have the main molecular biology topics in a clear and organized manner. For more detail and test questions get the full outline book from the same series. If you just want the info you need to know this book is outstanding! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Scientific Explanation of What Life Is"
"Molecular Biology of the Gene," James Watson et. al, 5th Edition, CSHL Press, NY 2004, ISBN 0-8053-4635-X, HC 732 pages, includes Preface, Index & inter-active CD-ROM & Website.11 1/4" x 8 3/4".

J.D. Watson authored first three editions (1965-'76), co-authored 4th ('87) & this 5th ('04) with Baker, Bell, Gann, Levine & Losick.CD works in Windows, but Mac OS X needs Classic for some sections (CHIME).This treatise has 21 chapters divided into 5 major parts: I-Chem.& Genetics, II-Genome Maintenance, III-Genome Expression, IV-Regulation and V-Methodologies.

The discourse best assumes readers to have both core & some advanced study in biology, chemistry, physics & genetics. It is a tutorial & reference manual with detailed covering of history of genetics, Mendelian heredity, elucidation & clarificaion of double helix, Crick's central dogma 1956, genetic code, weak & high-energy bonds, protein structure, conformation, modularity & domains, allostery, topologies, RNA structure, chromosomal sequence & diversity, duplication, chromatin structure & regulation, nucleosome assembly, DNA polymerase, binding & unwinding, replication error & repairs, DNA damage, recombination, transposition, transciption, splicings, shuffling, ribosomes, gene regulation in pro- & eu-karyotes, embryogenesis of Drosophila, genome evolution & methodologies for phage, bacteria, yeast, fly & mouse.

A formidable and now classic text fittingly entrusted to an elite working group in the US, UK and Canada. Most comforting is the liberal use of diagrams on essentially every page & the interactive CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Am Studying for the Biochemistry GRE - This book is golden
I got this book to assist for my prep for the Biochemistry GRE - I know a lot about Biology. So this is a great Book - First, It is very readable - I was surprised I was not able to put it down and knocked off 100 pages in record time.Besided that - it is enjoyable and not dull and boring - Second, The great experiments are given and insight into the science reasoning behind them also. This book makes the discover of genetics, DNA, RNA and protein building come alive. Third, this book is very current with research and cites the papers and journals where the important biology, Genetic, molecular & cell biology was published. That alone would save you the time to research and site these for your own research.Lastly, the pictures and recollections of the experimenters and "who knew who" are a total hoot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is an awesome teaching guide but the real prize goes to the CD and animations. Where a subject might be a bit hazy in the text, the flash animations on the CD are clear and concise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Some books are just very well written-this is one of them!

I like that they leave space in the margin to write notes. Organized more like a book you can read in chapters compared to the Lewin Genes text. Concise and up to date.

Product Description
Molecular Biology: Principles of Genome Function offers a fresh, distinctive approach to teaching one of today's most fascinating scientific subjects. Its perspective reflects the challenge of teaching a subject that is in many ways unrecognizable from the molecular biology of the 20th century--a discipline in which our understanding has advanced immeasurably, but about which many intriguing questions remain.

FEATURES:

* A focus on underlying principles--rather than an attempt to offer exhaustive detail--equips students with a robust conceptual framework to which they can add further details from the vast amount of scientific information available today.

* An emphasis on the commonalities that exist between bacteria, archae, and eukaryotes--along with coverage of their differences--provides an accurate depiction of our current understanding of the conserved nature of molecular biology and the variations that underpin biological diversity.

* An integration of key themes and concepts demonstrates how molecular phenomena like chromatin modification and RNA silencing have diverse impacts on genome function. It also helps students to appreciate molecular biology as a unified discipline, with many components and phenomena acting in concert.

* Clear demonstrations of the experimental basis of molecular biology (set off in the text in "Experimental Approach" panels) reflect the central importance of experimental evidence to furthering our understanding of molecular biology. These panels describe pieces of research that have been particularly valuable in elucidating different aspects of the discipline.

* Pedagogical features including full-color, custom-drawn artwork; end-of-chapter summaries; suggested readings grouped by topic; and an extensive glossary of key terms further enhance the text.

* An extensive Companion Website features additional materials for both instructors and students. For adopters of the text: figures from the book, available to download for use in lectures, and "Journal Club," suggested research papers and discussion questions linked to topics featured in the book. For students and instructors: "New and noteworthy"--key highlights from the field, updated for the start of each semester--and a library of three-dimensional models of key molecular structures featured in the book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars no longer short
I used a previous edition of this book in graduate school, and it was an excellent resource.Covering a broad range of protocols in a complete but concise manner, it was a single albeit fat volume that was portable and reasonably priced. In comparison to Maniatis and the full version of CP, this edition remains less extensive and less expensive, however in expanding to 2 volumes it has lost the advantage of portability that was (what I thought) really set it apart from others. The price of this edition has also increased to the point where the value of owning a personal copy has become highly questionable.

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent brief reference book
This is a well-organized, clear, short reference work.Well done

4-0 out of 5 stars The (little) Red book...
Here is the little red bok.
If the big one is too expensive for you, you can always buy this. You'll find inside all the important protocols and data for molecular biology. It's up to date, and clearly presented.
Try it, and then buy the big one!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good reference manual
This book is an essential tool for people in the scientific field such as Molecular Biology (obviously), Biochemistry, and Neuroscience. It is comprehensive and up-to-date as far as the techniques are concerned. It isgood value in a sense that you don't have to buy the whole "CurrentProtocols Series" which costs an arm and a leg if you do. Althoughnowadays, a lot of "kits" are commercially available, thetechniques found in this book explain principles and provide differentalternatives suited for your needs. Molecular Cloning by Maniatis et al.,although needs updating, is still a helpful reference in my opinion and itcomplements this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for any Molecular Biologist...

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth the hype
I bought this book to study for the USMLE Step 1 exam because of recommendations that I read on [...]. The book is currently out of print, and many people will try to buy this book for exorbitantly high prices in some cases. It isnot worth any more than cover price in my opinion. I admittedly have a solid background in Genetics from undergrad and research but I probably have the same background in Molecular Biology as every other US med student and I don't think I really learned anything from this book that I didn't already know, or at least anything I wouldn't have learned from UWorld and First Aid. If you struggle with these subjects, this book presents the concepts very clearly and concisely, but if you are not particularly weak in this area, I don't think this book is worth the extra money that it sometimes costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the newer edition
This book is much more concise than the new edition and is perfect review for USMLE.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH IT
This book is ok if you are struggling in this area, but it really isn't necessary. It isn't even a highly tested subject.DONT buy it here for $50 or more. It is not worth it. If you think you need it, try first getting it from another student.I sent an email to my school's listserve and somebody sold it to me for $25.Give it a try....

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad is a quick kill
To get the quick and fast H.Y. facts for the boards this is the one! Its shorter and to the point in comparison to BRS. Note this is not a good book for class only for the Boards

5-0 out of 5 stars Very High Yield!
High yield cell and molecular biology is exactly what it says, and from the outset doesn't pretend to be anything else. "Lean efficient text" says the blurb, "Study guides with the barest essentials". These words certainly comforted me after reading the somewhat ominous title! The text is compact, with clear and helpful diagrams illustrating and clarifying the most difficult concepts in the book. The style is in fact very much the same as I might choose to write own revision notes, with chapters divided into sub-titles, and those into bullet points. Key words are emboldened, so it is possible to absorb a page by only scanning the bold type; useful if you are caught short when preparing for an exam and need the facts quickly! There is a smattering of clinical examples throughout, and descriptions of procedures such as PCR, which both help anchor your thoughts of the sometimes abstract nature of the subject. Being a molecular biology book it is biased toward genetics, and as this is a confusing area for many students (including me), this will help if your genetics lectures tend to sail several meters over your head. On the downside, the economic nature of the text and the no-frills nature of the diagrams mean that it is not a particularly colourful or engaging read in it's own right. This is also positive, meaning that it is easier to extract information quickly than would be possible from a more bulky text. It is clearly meant to be dipped into, rather than read cover-to-cover. Realistically though, who would read a textbook cover-to-cover?People who will benefit from this book will be pre-clinical medical students, those intercalating a BSc in clinical science or genetics, doctors requiring an up-to-date review, or other students of biomedical science. This should not be your only textbook on cellular biology and genetics, but will serve as the perfect revision tool when exams sidle up too close for comfort. ... Read more

Product Description
The third edition of The Neuron provides a comprehensive first course in the cell and molecular biology of nerve cells. The first part of the book covers the properties of the many newly discovered ion channels that have emerged through mapping of the genome. These channels shape the way a single neuron generates varied patterns of electrical activity. Next are covered the molecular mechanisms that convert electrical activity into the secretion of neurotransmitter hormones at synaptic junctions between neurons. The second part of the book covers the biochemical pathways that are linked to the action of neurotransmitters and that can alter the cellular properties of neurons or sensory cells that transduce information from the outside world into the electrical code used by neurons. The final section reviews our rapidly expanding knowledge of the molecular facters that induce an undifferentiated cell to become a neuron, and then guide it to form appropriate synaptic connections with its partners. This section also focuses on the role of ongoing experience and activity in shaping these connections, and finishes with an account of mechanisms thought to underlie the phenomena of learning and memory. New for the Third Edition: This is a thoroughly revised and expanded edition (60 pages longer) and features a new 8-page, 4-color insert as well as the following changes: 1. The mapping of the human genome and that of other species has led to the discovery of numerous new proteins that regulate the excitability, development, and function of neurons. These have been incorporated into the new edition in nearly all of the chapters. 2. The first section of the book, which deals with neuronal excitability, has been reorganized to make it more readable for those students with less background in physical sciences. A new chapter has been added to this section to allow the incorporation of new information on ion channel structure and on the role of channel auxiliary proteins in modulating neuronal excitability. 3. A new chapter, "The Birth and Death of Neurons," has been added to the last section. In addition to covering new discoveries about the early development of neurons, this chapter describes the recent discovery that new neurons are continually being formed in certain parts of the adult mammalian brain. It also describes research on stem cells, which holds therapeutic potential for the repair of damaged or diseased brain tissue. 4. The use of imaging technologies in the study of the brain has expanded enormously in the past few years. The new edition describes some of these new approaches. Moreover, the introduction of full color plates now allows many new images to be presented in their original form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my cellular biology of the nervous system class
Excellent textbook, explains very well the terms it presents while on the same time is a very easy to read book. It seemed much easier for me to read and comprehend what we learned in class with "the Neuron" in comparison to our designated textbook, which was also very good but less enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I've really enjoyed this book so far. It's by far the best neuro molec book out that I've got my hands on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful text
This is one of the few molecular neurobiology textbooks available to the serious student. Overall, it is a very well written text, up to date, and quite detailed.

There is one weird quality about the book, however: the authors have not directly referenced statements in the book, as you would expect to find in any good advanced textbook in a scholarly field. They have instead written a bibliography at the very end, consisting of "Recommended Reading" and "References" for each chapter. I am unsure what criteria they used to differentiate the two.

Other than this minor point however, it's a first rate buy. The authors deserve several pats on their backs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuron details
The molecular biology of the neuron is considered, from its electrical properties, synapses, differentiation, axon pathfinding, to chapters concluding with behavior and memory. Well written and includes easy to follow schematic diagrams, this reference is suitable for the motivated general reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on all levels
"The Neuron" was a fantastic book to read. It served as a perfect mesh between a textbook and a novel. The book was written in plain english so anyone could enjoy it. The concepts discussed ranged from elementary to advanced which provided a nice progression to more complicated things. This book is a must read for anyone interested in neuroscience. ... Read more
