He is remembered as one of the most important figures in Mongolia's struggle for independence. Sükhbaatar (literally meaning "Axe hero" in the Mongolian language) was born in Maimaicheng (the Chinese trading settlement some kilometers east of Ikh Khüree) as third of four children. His parents had deserted their home banner in Setsen Khan aimag, and his father lived from odd jobs and as a day labourer. When Sükhbaatar was six, the family moved to a place near the Russian consulate. It was from playing with the Russian children that he learnt to speak some Russian. At the age of 14, Sükhbaatar had the lucky opportunity to get an education, by Zaisan Jamyan. From the age of 16 onwards, he worked as a proxy Öörtöö rider (at that time, people that were obliged to render certain services to the authorities often employed other people to replace them) for several years. After Mongolia's first declaration of independence in 1911, Sükhbaatar was drafted into the new nation's army. In 1912, Russian advisors set up a military school at Khujirbulan, and Sükhbaatar was one of the soldiers transferred there. His talent for military tactics and his skills at riding and shooting earned him the respect of his comrades, and after the training he became a platoon leader of the machine gun company at Khujirbulan. Excerpt:Flag On December 29, 1911 the Khalkhas of Outer Mongolia declared their independence of the Qing Dynasty, and installed a theocratic leader, the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, as Bogd Khaan or Holy Emperor. This ushered in the Bogd Khaan era, 1911 to 1919 (Bogd Khaanate) or Theocratic Mongolia. Three historical currents were at work during this period. The first was the efforts of the Mongolians to form an independent, theocratic state that embraced Inner Mongolia, Barga (also known as Hulunbuir), and Tannu Uriankhai (pan-Mongolia). The second was Tsarist Russias determination to achieve the twin goals of establishing its own preeminent influence in the country but, at the same time ensuring Mongolias autonomy, not independence, within the Chinese state. The third was the ultimate success of the Chinese in eliminating autonomy, and restoring sovereignty over the country. outdated picture, largely statistical
I used to read Alan Sanders' reports from Mongolia in the old Far Eastern Economic Review for many years and I always found them very informative.That's why I bought MONGOLIA:.... in Melbourne back in 1988.If you are interested in a picture of Mongolia up to 1986 or so, a picture garnished with a huge number of statistics, gleaned from the Mongolian People's Republic official publications or from Soviet sources, then this could be the book you are looking for.You will learn about milk prices in 1982, the number of animals in the national herd in different years, wages and pensions, and the amount of Mongolian exports to Britain.You get blow by blow development of economic and social changes.It is nearly impossible to read straight though you can find a large number of interesting nuggets if you persevere.It would be better as a reference work.The author includes some basic Mongolian history, but you can find more extensive and better written accounts elsewhere.Sanders obviously liked Mongolia and did not want to offend people, nor get on the `bad side' of officials and be banned from returning.I think he could have been more questioning, as statistics often reflect what governments want to show---of course not only in countries whose governments we don't like.The book was part of a series on socialist/communist countries in the world.Given that most of those countries have long-since discarded the system, it is inevitable that this book be quite out of date.While respecting the work that Sanders must have done to get this volume together, I would have to wonder who exactly would like to read it today.

It covers ten years of work and five seasons in the field. The cost was over 600,000 dollars and the European staff comprised thirty-four experts, of whom five were topographers. The value of this book is not strictly geographical. Notes on zoology, palaeontology, and topography are scattered throughout the book, together forming a fine picture of the whole object and results of the expedition. The difficulties of the topographers are well exemplified by the account (p. 293) of the survey of a mirage with its lake and hills, in the belief that it was in fact what it looked like. Part I deals with the Mongolian Expeditions in which a fleet of Dodge cars take a leading place and without which such great distances could never have been traversedin the time. But perhaps the outstanding feature of the book is the impor tance and success of correlated scientific work in the field. Its value is amply proved. Zoology, botany, palaeontology, and topography were all brought into contact overa single specimen, and for that Dr. Andrews must take full credit. The genesis of the expeditions dates from Professor Osborn's prediction in 1900 that Asia would prove to have been a great dispersal centre of northern terrestrial mammalian life, and the remarkable fossil discoveries appear to have amply justified the contention. The discovery of the Baluchitherium (pp. 138 et seq.), of the Shovel-toothed Mastodon (Platybelodon), together with a fossil foetus (p. 144), and of some fifty eggsof more than one species of Dinosaur at the now famous Flaming Cliffs of Shabarakh Usu, are among the most sensational and are of world-wide interest.
