2-0 out of 5 stars It is generally not needed - please read the warning
WARNING - Saxon's Algebra is a great course but this is not 'it' - please read below.

All you get is the Test forms in a booklet that is ALWAYS included in the Home Study Kit.

The HOME STUDY KIT is made up of:

1 - The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
2 - Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
3 - Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

You only get #2 if you order this item, meaning that you will NOT be able to teach your students Algebra. Moreover, there is no value in purchasing this booklet as it is always included with the Home Study Kit so, to the extent that you get a textbook, you the tests booklet should be included. Also, keep in mind that the 32 pages can be easily copied and, in fact, the last 2 pages are test forms that are meant to be reproduced.

I love Saxon and I've been using Saxon courses for many years with my children but you should look for the Home Study Kit or any other offer that includes the 3 items I listed above.

I am including my review of the Home Study Kit as a way to help those interested with purchases what is actually needed to successfully teach Algebra 1.

_____________________________________________

BRIEF EVALUATION OF THE COMPLETE STUDY KIT

Like previous courses in the Saxon's series, Algebra 1 is a most effective tool for teaching children math without intimidating them and without boring them. After more than 6 years of teaching my own kids math after school I can testify that it works. Both my kids are now in advanced math classes, their math grades always A's and, as I explain below, we just skipped Algebra 1/2 as not necessary.

ALGEBRA 1/2 vs. ALGEBRA 1

I found Algebra 1 to be the logical 'next' for my kids who successfully covered Saxon's Math 8/7 the year before. We decided to skip Algebra 1/2 because it was more or less a re-review of the material in 8/7, presumably to ensure a solid math foundation prior to moving into the more abstract 'true' algebra covered by this text.

I would suggest taking Algebra 1 ans skipping Algebra 1/2 if your students have mastered Math 8/7. Otherwise, go with Algebra 1.

THE SAXON METHOD

We've been using Saxon's books to teach our kids math starting with Math 3/2 and we've been very happy.

Algebra 1 is comprised of 120 lessons, 31 tests, one extra topic on real number, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions. Unlike the previous Math courses, there are no 'Investigations' and the lessons no longer begin with drills and warmup activities. Also, unlike prior math cycles up to Math 8/7, tests are administered after every four lesson rather than after every five.

Each lesson begins by explaining and illustrating a number of new topics - rarely one, usually two or three, sometimes more. That is followed by a small number of practice exercises that are related to the new topics. Finally, there is a 30-item problem set (what the prior volumes were calling 'mixed practice') that asks students to answer/solve 30 questions that could be on EVERYTHING covered by Saxon up to that point. Each individual question has references to the lesson(s) which the students may want to review if they are having trouble with the answer/solution.

After every 4 lessons there is a 20-question test.

The problem set and the multi-topic lessons are what makes the Saxon method so effective as new concepts are introduced incrementally and each problem set keeps revisiting prior topics and many of the problems require the student to combine skills and knowledge acquired in more than one lesson.

THE KIT's CONTENTS

A complete, usable kit should include the following:

- The Algebra 1 student's textbook that includes the 120 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
- Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
- Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there.

If you are not comfortable with the topic, you MAY want to order the optional 'Solutions manual' and, perhaps the Teacher's manual. I have no experience with these items.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

You should be very careful on what you get in your order. The 3 items above are what is usually called 'The Home Study Kit'. This is sufficient for teaching math. Please be aware that you will not be able to teach math effectively unless you have all 3 times above. Before you actually place your order, you should contact the seller and make sure that this is what you get.

I found the DIVE into Math CD for Saxon Algebra 1, 3rd edition to be a very useful addition. In fact this is what I am using this year and both the kids and myself are happier for it. You may be able to find kits that sell the CD separately or as part of a bundle. You will not be able to teach with the CD alone because you will be missing the practice problems and the tests so consider buying the CD by itself if you already have the 'study kit' or look for some bundle that has both the study kit and the CD. One CD for your 'class' should be sufficient so, if you have more than one student, buy as many kits as you need for the students and only one CD for teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saxon Tests
Saxon's math tests are both fair and an accurate picture of what the student should know.Nothing is given in a test that has not been thoroughly reviewed in the textbook first, so students have an opportunity to score well if they have been doing and understanding their homework. We have also found that using Saxon math, as intended, increases scores on standardized testing, because students retain more. ... Please be aware all who are buying this book. The paperback version they give here on amazon is not the actual textbook. It is an All-In-One student workbook. If you are looking to get the actual textbook the only option is the hardback version.Amazon did not label that the paperback was different from the textbook, they call both books the exact same thing. They should have included in the title that it was a workbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless piece of garbage
Whoever chose this book as a book for 10th graders to learn Algebra 2, should be thrown out as a high school math coordinator. It's the worst piece of garbage I have ever tried to use to explain the subject to my totally disheartened daughter. What's wrong with people that they can't teach and they can't write a decent book to explain these concepts to kids who are total novices? I just don't get it. If it can't be explained and taught and understood then it's not worth knowing, as far as I'm concerned. Not every person will be the next Einstein. Teach my kid something that will be useful in her adult life- this stuff is not it.

Book in great condition, however I didn't know about the code that I needed for my math lab.It was not in the book as it would be in a new book.I had to buy the code from college it cost me $75.00.So in conclusion I really didn't save any money at all.I would recommend buying a new book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Algebra book!
This book is the bomb.I have been studying from it for a couple of months now preparing for a teacher's examination.I am self-studying only and have found this bood to be very user-friendly.There are a lot of sample problems and as well as practice problems. There are review problems from previous chapters in every section of practice problems.I also like that the order of the equations and problems are not necessarily in increasing difficulty order. An easy question/equation/prblem (whatever) are mixed in with the harder ones. There are also a lot of "real-world" kind of applications. So, if you are wanted a little more of a broader view of Algebra (besides just "how can I pass the test" material) I think this would be a good choice.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Renowned professor and author Gilbert Strang demonstrates that linear algebra is a fascinating subject by showing both its beauty and value. While the mathematics is there, the effort is not all concentrated on proofs. Strang's emphasis is on understanding. He explains concepts, rather than deduces. This book is written in an informal and personal style and teaches real mathematics. The gears change in Chapter 2 as students reach the introduction of vector spaces. Throughout the book, the theory is motivated and reinforced by genuine applications, allowing pure mathematicians to teach applied mathematics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a beginner, this is the book you must read!!!
I highly recommend this book to beginners. Is it possible there is no lemma, theorem or proof in an EXCELLENT math book? Yes! This book presents a very clear picture of linear algebra in a friendly way instead of simply listing some theorems. The words, notations and figures are very appropriate. The author is humorous. Sometimes, I even found I read the book with smile. Unbelievable! If you were scared by math once, you may try this book to retrieve your confidence and enthusiasm on math. It is really quite enjoying reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for a first course in applied linear algebra
As someone who works in an R&D environment (and is called upon to use linear algebra to solve real world
engineering problems), I wanted to put this book in perspective for those who may be unsure of the true value of this book given the variance in the reviews.

1. This book presents an applied treatment of the subject appropriate for a first course. The goal of the
book is to provide the reader with an intuitive understanding of the material. Geometrical arguments and diagrams
are used throughout without apology. Coordinates and matrices are emphasized. Formal proofs are not emphasized.

2. This book is geared toward those doing computations in the real world.Linear algebra
is the workhorse of modern applied mathematics. Any modern course on linear algebra that does not cover LU, QR, SVD,
and least squares is out of touch with reality and in my opinion doing a disservice to those who are paying $$$
for an education.Specifically, those who are ever planning
to get a job in engineering or the mathematical sciences will at some time be expected to solve (or understand how
software like MATLAB solves) least squares problems, systems
of linear equations, eigenvalue problems, linear ODE's, optimization problems, etc...As a result, this book
is focused on matrices and computations. This book is practical in the sense that in the real world -where
numerical solutions are usually required - we are
forced to deal with a basis-dependent
finite-dimensional representation of our problem.

3. Those who require a second course in Linear Algebra covering Jordan Forms, the theory of linear operators, and more advanced material
will not have to unlearn anything from this book.In fact this book is a good stepping stone to further study.
For example, someone who comes to Hoffman/Kunze or Halmos after this book will better appreciate the more
abstract approach based on linear transformations. After all, how can anyone understand or appreciate
a formal abstract treatment of this material before one has a firm grasp of what is being abstracted?

4. Strang has a webpage with video lectures that augment the text and shed additional insight on the material. These
lectures are excellent and really demonstrate the love Strang has for teaching this subject to others.
In my opinion he has done the scientific and engineering communities a big service by writing this book and posting his
video lectures.

5. Strang has another text on Linear Algebra, Intro to Linear Algebra. Although that text is geared at slightly
a lower level, I like the present text better as a learning tool.
The Intro text is slightly more disjoint in its presentation
and seems to leave more for the reader to discover rather than just presenting the information.

6. If you really do not like Strang's writing style (which is very conversational, and in my opinion, better
than the dry style of other texts), tryMeyer's treatment ("Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra").Meyer is more of a traditional text and provides
material for both a first and second course on applied linear algebra (with more emphasis on a second course).

Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...more than I ever wanted to know!
This book takes on the very difficult challenge of linear algebra. The book is pretty good, but acces to Strang's online lectures is awesome! This guy is a very good instructor, and I highly recommend watching his lectures when going through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the clearest text on Linear Algebra
I was fortunate to have taken this course and Applied Mathematics from Gilbert Strang at MIT in the mid-late 1980's. We used this and his Introduction to Applied Mathematics texts. The revised edition of this text is updated and contains newer applications, and is current for today's students.

The texts (both of them) were the clearest and most relevant texts in mathematics that I ever used. This, coupled with Professor Strang's enthusiasm and down-to-earth teaching style made these courses actually enjoyable to this geology major. I use both texts as references to this day in the increasingly numerical science of geology and geochemistry. Coupled with Matlab, the texts are very helpful in leading me through development of numerical models in my research and teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of the 2nd Edition
"Linear Algebra and Its Applications" by Gilbert Strang is currently in its 4th edition, but this review is of the 2nd edition.I haven't seen the 4th, but I assume that it is as good as (if not better than) the 2nd.

The text is an excellent introduction to the subject.I was a new graduate student in applied mathematics in 1980 when I took a two-quarter sequence in linear algebra using this textbook. There are many other textbooks on the subject, virtually all of them in the traditional "Theorem-Proof with examples" format. It's easy to follow the logical flow in those texts, and that can sometimes be reassuring. However, Strang's textbook gives the reader deeper insights into the subject, though the reader will sometimes have to work harder to harvest them.It can sometimes be maddening to follow the logical flow in Strang, to separate the theorems from examples from observations. But the struggle is well worth it.I never found any logical flaws in Strang's reasoning (the same cannot be said for other texts), and Strang's notation was always conveniently general without being awkward.Over the years I have referred to Strang on minor points when other texts left me confused.

In short, I would recommend this book to any student as a reference, for self-study, or as a course textbook. But be ready to do the work to get the best possible understanding from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Preparation for Algebra, Perfect for Homeschoolers, Should Work for All
We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Algebra 1/2, was always our choice for math texts.I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well.I find that for most students, if they will take the time to read the lesson well, do all of the problems, and then rework any problems they miss then they will achieve a high degree of mastery of the material at hand.

This book will adequately prepare math students for Algebra 1, which has proven to be the mathematical Waterloo of many a student. With adequate preparation, it doesn't have to be.Advanced students may be able to move from Math 76 directly to Algebra 1, especially if it seems (as it has to some) that this book moves to slowly or contains too much review.

The greatest advantage of Saxon Math is that each lesson provides practice not only for the new problems but also built-in review for every kind of problem the student has previously encountered.Algebra 1/2 is no exception to the rule that Saxon Math texts help students learn math well. After Algebra 1/2, all of my kids who have taken it were definitely ready to move on to the next level.

In general, Saxon Math, including Algebra 1/2, is highly recommended. It is especially ideal for homeschooling families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for advanced students
The people that give this series of books bad reviews simply don't understand that kids need a lot of repetition to learn math and to retain what they've learned. My husband is a college math teacher and we've homeschooled two kids with these books. He says he wishes all kids learned math this way. He always knows when he gets a homeschooled student in one of his math classesthat they will do well and succeed in the class. The Saxon math books are used by many private schools and homeschoolers and are considered useful for advanced students, not students that struggle, like one reviewer said. My son used the Saxon math series from 2nd grade to age 14 and it prepared him well for college math. He's 15 now and takes Calculus at our local community college. My daughter used it until she decided to go to public high school, where she became bored by the books they used and sadly started hating math. This series gives a very strong foundation because of all the repetition. It may seem boring to some folks, but it works if you give it a chance. : )

5-0 out of 5 stars A transitional course, only needed if Math 8/7 wasn't fully mastered
BRIEF EVALUATION

I found Algebra 1/2 to cover with only small additions and enhancements the topics that Saxon's Math 8/7 covered already. While it should be very good for students who feel the need to consolidate the material studied during the previous year, my own children felt that there was little new here and they asked me to skip the Algebra Half and go to the full Algebra One, which is what we are about to do.

We had a very good experience with this set but, thanks to my kids being such godd students, we've decided to skip it.

Even though we had to abandon this course after the first half-dozen lessons convinced us that we didn't need it, I will grant the package 5 stars for Saxon's proven effectiveness but be aware that this should be skipped by the more advanced students.

THE SAXON METHOD

We've been using Saxon's books to teach our kids math starting with Math 3/2 and we've been very happy.

Algebra 1/2 (it means ALGEBRA HALF not "Algebra One and Two" is comprised of 123 lessons, 31 tests and a number of Topics labeled from A to J. Unlike the previous Math courses, there are no 'Investigations' and the lessons no longer begin with drills and warmup activities. Also, unlike prior math cycles up to Math 8/7, tests are administered after every four lesson rather than after every five.

Each lesson begins by explaining and illustrating a number of new topics - one, two or sometimes three.

The problem set and the multi-topic lessons are what makes the Saxon method so effective as new concepts are introduced incrementally and each problem set keeps revisiting prior topics and many of the problems require the student to combine skills and knowledge aquired in more than one lesson.

THE KIT's CONTENTS

A complete kit should include the following:

- The Algebra 1/2 textbook that includes the 123 lessons, the extra topics, index, glossary and an answer key to the odd-numbered problems.
- Test forms that include the 31 tests plus reproducible test answer sheets.
- Answers and tests solutions booklet that is just that. It only includes the answers not the ways to get there - for that an optional 'Solutions manual' can be obtained separately.

Note: Please be aware that the THIRD edition is now available. This being 'math', the changes are minor but you can probably get 'the latest' for about the same price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Less Than One STAR!!
I absolutely hate this math book.It does a terrible job at presenting concepts, to little practice of a new concept, and way to much review.I would give it less than one star if it were an option. Please try to go check this book out at a store if you are considering buying it.I bought it because so many people I knew recommended it. I wish I never had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saxon Rocks!
Saxon makes it so easy to homeschool! My 4th grader is zipping through pre-algebra on his own because of this simple to use text.LOTS of examples and practice.Plenty of review of old material to keep it in the long-term pool.Uncomplicated language. Easy for mom to shorten length of "seatwork" by crossing-off mastered material. My only gripe so far is that in Lesson 46 they jump right into indexes & radical numbers with no previous explanation (or review)of the concept of squares or square roots. They also didn't use the terms "squared" or "cubed," and offered no explanation of why indexes are written starting with 3, not 2.And, in that same lesson, they used the number 1 in an example to explain powers and to explain simplifying a radical.(I thought that was pretty lame.)
But other than that one bizarre lesson, the book is SO easy to use, your child can teach himself!(I also love how they throw in neat vocabulary words in their word problems.) ... Read more

Product Description

These authors have created a book to really help students visualize mathematics for better comprehension. By creating algebraic visual side-by-sides to solve various problems in the examples, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution. In addition, the authors have added a variety of new tools to help students better use the book for maximum effectiveness to not only pass the course, but truly understand the material.

Great book seller! I bought the book and within 4 days I had received it, which is greast because I bought it after the semester had started. The book was in great condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the right book
I needed a book for my college algebra course. This was the one in the syllubus. What I did not expect was to get the instructor's edition. Now, I am trying to get rid of it and all of the local college bookstores will not take it back. But they are taking back the student's version for about 60 dollars. Thanks alot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in Many Ways
As a math tutor, I am familiar with many books.I really like this book because it explains everything I would want the student to know.It illustrates all the common pitfalls very clearly.

***** 5 stars for presentation (layout, typesetting, use of color, organization).

***** 5 stars for content (the authors seem to be very in touch with what explanations work for students both in the short term, and what explanations are best for them in the long term.)

***** 5 stars for the exercises. There are a lot of exercises in each section (usually around 100?).They cover the basics all the way up to what they call the 'sythesis' problems, where the student can challenge themselves to do advanced problems.I really like the synthesis problems because they are do-able and can make the student start to feel confident.

Product Description
David Poole's innovative book prepares students to make the transition from the computational aspects of the course to the theoretical by emphasizing vectors and geometric intuition from the start. Designed for a one- or two-semester introductory course and written in simple, "mathematical English" the book presents interesting examples before abstraction. This immediately follows up theoretical discussion with further examples and a variety of applications drawn from a number of disciplines, which reinforces the practical utility of the math, and helps students from a variety of backgrounds and learning styles stay connected to the concepts they are learning. Poole's approach helps students succeed in this course by learning vectors and vector geometry first in order to visualize and understand the meaning of the calculations that they will encounter and develop mathematical maturity for thinking abstractly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bargain
I purchased this book for my linear algebra class.I was able to get it much cheaper then the college bookstore was selling it for.

I did not buy the answer key because I found it not worth the price people were asking for it.Unfortunately this may lead to frustration, but usually the professor will go over the hard questions in class if there is time.

The book is not overly complicated as long as you understand what you are reading. You may have to reread some things for understanding, but overall it is an easy read (at least it was for me).

I do believe that there is now a 3rd edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed
Bought this book for a college class. It was the right one and a bit cheaper than the bookstore.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Linear Algebra Reference
Having been away from academics for a while, I thought I could use a bit of a referesher in some of the basics. Having learned Linear Algebra using Hugh Campbell's text, I was in for quite a surprise when I began using both Poole's and Lay's texts as refreshers. Both treat the theory of matrices the same. However, Poole introduces the notions of vector spaces early on with clear explanations. The one failing of this text is the treatment of determinants as an afterthought. Rather than have its own chapter, as in Lay, this is a subsection treated more as a curiosity. The development and power of determinants is downplayed all around, but especially in Poole. Overall, however, it is a very good beginners text on a very powerful math subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Numerous errors
Besides copious amounts of unnecessary jargon and run-on sentences, the listed solutions (both in the appendix and separate [$$$] solutions manual) for problems in this book are frequently incorrect.BIG INCONVENIENCE AND WHOLLY UNACCEPTABLE; given that few problems in linear algebra are quickly processed by hand.If you use this text, expect to spend an hour on one problem attempting to find errors in your approach when in fact there are none, and the listed solution was just wrong.

Instructors and students agree that the frequency of incorrect answers is the biggest problem with this text.

Thou art warned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can compensate for a bad instructor!
Having read a couple of books on the subject, I really think this is an ideal choice for any introductory Linear Algebra course. Poole's emphasis is clearly on readability for a range of students and building intuitive understanding on a vector-based foundation (where other texts have you lose sight of this through endless computations and sets of matrices). He provides intermittent examples of appropriately rigorous proofs without inundating you (lets you fill in the details in a few exercises) and always offers techniques to help you practically approach types of problems. I'm not a hardcore mathematics person - mostly taking these courses to fill my requirements for teaching high school physics - but I can honestly say that you can carefully read through a section once, and blaze through many problems that are on par with most other texts' (Poole, thankfully, is very generous with # of medium-level practice exercises, and carefully selects challenge problems that are enlightening but still in the scope of the book!). Just as a heads-up, this book doesn't always use the "classical" LA terminology (example: Chapter 5 doesn't emphasize that it is actually dealing with "the Fundamental Theorem of Linear Algebra"). However, it doesn't skimp on any vital intuitive/conceptual implications these theorems bring to light...

Ultimately, this book retains value even after you finish the course (keeping it, when I have the time to go through the entertaining professional applications of LA the author shows in detail). I would seriously consider buying books by this man if he published on other subjects, even if I didn't necessarily need the course! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition - is not the current edition
NOTE OF CAUTION

I am taking away one star from my rating because the product page does not make it clear that a newer edition of this book has been available for several years already.

ABOUT THE SOLUTIONS MANUAL

The 'Solutions manual' can be a useful reference to anyone not fully comfortable with the topic and I didn't think I needed one until we did 'Algebra 1' last year. For 'Algebra 2' I felt that I HAD to have it. The manual is needed because the 'normal' kit would only have 'full solutions' for the tests but the problem Answer Key book only hasthe correct answers for the practice and the problem sets but it does NOT show not the step-by-step.

For the THIRD Edition what you get is 370 pages showing the steps you take to solve every single practice and problem set question with the cautionary note from the authors what there is often more than one way to get to the right answer. However, the Solutions Manual tries to stay as close as possible to the methods and procedures as presented in the textbook. The early solutions to a particular type of problem show every single step while later solutions omit the simple steps.

I am very happy for ordering the Solutions Manual. Even though I don't expect to use it very often, it's reassuring to have it handy, just in case. This book, while not a 'must have' component of an 'Algebra 2 kit' gets 5-stars for thoroughness and for 'being there when I need it'.

NOTES OF CAUTION

There are TWO main things you must check and make sure that are right before you order:

- Make sure that the EDITION for this book matches your student's manual. The current is the THIRD edition but SECOND edition courseware is still available from vendors. THIS OFFER APPEARS TO BE FOR THE SECOND EDITION.
- Be aware that this is NOT an essential component of an 'Algebra 2 Kit' even though it may help.
- You will only need ONE copy, no matter how many students you may have. This should be mostly for teacher use.

What you MUST have in order to be able to teach Algebra 2 is (for the Third Edition):

- The "Algebra 2 Third Edition" student's textbook [this one] that includes the 129 lessons, 2 introductory or review lessons, Glossary, Index and answers to the odd-numbered questions.
- The "Homeschool Testing Book" that include the 32 tests, reproducible test answer sheets and the answers together with the 'step-by-step' on how to get there.
- The "Answer Key" booklet that has the answers to all the practice and problem sets but ONLY the answers, not the ways to get there.

NOTES:

The Dive Supplement
-------------------
I found the DIVE Math Instructional CD for Saxon Algebra 2 3rd ed. to be a very useful addition to the kit. In fact I am using it this year after using the 'Algebra 1' edition last year. Like it's the case with the Solutions Manual, you will only need one DIVE CD even if you have more than one student.

It's worth noting that DIVE is NOT a Saxon product. This is a separate product that closely follows the Saxon course and you should make sure that you match the Saxon edition with the correct version of the DIVE CD.

A Personal Note
---------------

I should say that, to us, the effectiveness of Saxon's method is no longer a matter or doubt or debate. My senior kid was awarded the 'Highest Average in Math' at his campus upon completing his 8th grade and I have little doubt that our math home study is/was a contributing factor to his being awarded the "President's Education Award" and his bing on the Honor Roll on all 4 quarters of his 8th grade. His younger brother is also a 'straight A math student (typical math grade average is 97-99 each term) and a Honor roll/Principal's List most of the time. I mention this because both of them used to be quite 'in the middle' as in 'mediocre' when we started with Saxon (that's what prompted me to 'take action'). Us practicing math after school clearly developed their study skills and, since math is so 'hard', it helped them master most of the other topics taught in school with ease.

And, finally, and this might have fit under 'practical advice' as well, I'd like to note that doing this is NOT easy. Covering 129 lessons ad giving 32 tests calls for a VERY SIGNIFICANT investment of time and effort from both parent and children. I estimate we spent anything from 90 minutes to 2 hours per lesson and we usually 'do math' 5 to 6 days per week with a typical math study year beginning at the end of August and ending sometime early or mid-May.

My daughter was having trouble with Algebra and after getting this book, I was able to help her bring her grades up!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math book.....EVER!
Let me be perfectly honest; I used to loathe mathematics with my entire being, that was before I began using the Saxon texts. Now I am confident in my study of algebra II and I really wish that each student woulduse this book!!! The examples are informative, precise, yet altogether interesting! Mr. Saxon leaves nothing to befuddle the student, and his approach reinforces the students confidence and their ability to do more advanced types of problems.

God bless Mr. Saxon, -his knowledge has brought joy and understanding to so many students- may he rest in heavenly peace! :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor textbook.Would have given 0 stars if possible.
Do not buy this book unless it is absolutely required for your class. The other reviewers discussing the lack of clarity and completeness in this book are telling you the truth. The presentation of the information is poor.

It's not that people are giving it bad reviews because it isn't "Mathematical" enough.Textbooks do exist that give a good treatment of the subject without going into gory detail. However, this book has information haphazardly organized and essentially glosses over almost everything in a "you get the hang of it, right? Lets move on" type feeling.

Find something else to buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Algebra Book
The book was received quickly for a good price.Explanations in the book aren't very clear though.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This book was required for my Linear Alg class last semester. Like everybody else, I'm going to add another one star for this poor written book. I have about three other Linear Algebra books and this one has the most illogical order. It teaches linear transformation without even saying what a vector really is. It teaches you matrix multiplication after linear transformation. It never says anything about the dot product. So I think that the author assumes you to know something in advance. At some point you will go to a dead end. You'll found that the explanation is not enough. So you'll end up looking for other books or some other sources to help you understand the material. That's what happened to me. Fortunately, as I looked for helps on the net I found a youtube channel with awesome video tutorials. It is KhanAcademy. The guy is so famous that he's featured on TV news. He's a hundred time better than my professor.

So, my advice is NEVER buy this book. Spend money for something else. If you want an easy A and a clear understanding of basic Linear Algebra, check out that youtube channel: KhanAcademy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best textbook I've taught out of
Bretscher's linear algebra book is the best textbook I've taught out of, from 4 years of college teaching. It is thoroughly well written, in considered and elegant prose. The three huge advantages of this book are, firstly, it provides motivation, both scientific and historical, for all the concepts introduced. Secondly, the organization is very well thought out and can be made to flow nicely (despite, or perhaps because of, not being canonical as other reviewers complain about). Thirdly, computational and conceptual issues are introduced alongside each other, so that one understands the practical relation between the Gram-Schmidt algorithm and QR-factorization, for example. The dynamical systems material is very nice, as is the explanation of least-squares minimization. There are plenty of exercises from the trivial to the conceptual, although sometimes i would have preferred more exercises of middling difficulty. The book starts with systems of linear equations and introduces abstractions gradually, intended as a transitional course for would-be mathematics majors. For my student body of mostly economists and mixed scientists, the march of abstraction started to become hard, and adding more problems of the down-to-earth variety in later chapters might help.

In summary, I would recommend anyone considering taking or teaching a course in linear algebra to look over this book. Other books (Strang, or Schaum's outline for extra exercises) might be handy for different levels of students, but this is a fine book and worth leafing through for the historical notes and overview of the subject alone.

To the reviewer who complained the book introduced subspaces before spaces: I find the book's choice on this and similar matters very sensible. Every finite-dimensional space is isomorphic to R^n, and that's the setting where linear algebra first becomes useful, and where subspaces arise naturally as kernels and images. Later one notices that the same ideas apply in more general settings - but why leap into the void of generality before the most comprehensible examples are understood? Examples first!See Tim Gowers' comments on the subject in his blog.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Piece of **** I ever read in my life.
I am going to skip the intro and get on with the problems of this Son of a ***** textbook.

1. This has got to be the hardest math textbook I have ever read in my life. And I don't mean in a challenging way, I mean in a difficult to understand way. They do an extremely poor job on explaining Linear Algebra, examples are hard to follow, and there is no fundamentals at all. On the top of that, I think I've actually gotten dumber reading this pile of **** because I had to Google information, just because I was stuck on homework. This books believes that if they only show the theorems, definitions and a few USELESS examples, the student will learn. So to sum this all up, you won't learn any fundamentals or any tricks on how to solve matrix operations. Sometimes the author gets ****ing lazy and decided to let you do the proofs as homework problems. And no, these aren't proofs where you prove "if this, that happens," these are proof of definitions and properties, and this happens almost every chapter.

2. I want to talk about the "examples" more because they are worth mentioning. The book doesn't provide you with a solid example, even if it did, there wasn't enough to fully understand the concept. For instance, in Chapter 2.1 Ex5, it tells you about rotating a vector counterclockwise but the example doesn't tell you how to rotate clockwise. So on any problem that asks you to rotate clockwise (problem 34), you are screwed unless you read ahead into Chapter 2.2. And this happens all the time. In Chapter 3.4 they tell you how to do a transformation with coordinates in subspace, but the only example they provide you is orthogonal projection. None of the assign problems had to do with orthogonal projections, so again you are screwed unless you read ahead or asked someone for help. The only way to get around this is when your teacher assign even problems, and you do the odd problems just to check on the solution to see if it matches. That is literally the only way you will learn.

3. The solutions..... This is where the textbook bites you in the ass, and gets credit dock off your homework. The solutions in this textbook are so inconsistent, it is meant to confuse students. In Chapter 3.1, the solution to a Kernel of a transformation is for example [1, 0, -1]. Then, in Chapter 3.2, the textbook changes its ****ing mind and decides to write the same kernel of the same transformation as [-1, 0, 1]. Technically they are the same kernel, but that isn't what the solution on the back says, or the solution manual. So you can probably guess what's going to happen when the pathetic TA grades your homework. I am not kidding, everyone in our class had points taken off their homework because the kernel solution didn't match the solution in the manual, even though they are the same exact thing. We never knew what we did wrong until a few weeks after. So by reading from this textbook, you won't learn from your mistakes, you are going to keep making mistakes and suffer with it for the rest of your life!

4. Another thing I want to touch upon is the **** solutions the textbooks provide. The solutions are inconsistent, confusion and most of the time useless. Sometimes the questions are a bit complex, and if you look on the back in the solutions, they graciously said "Answers to more theoretical questions are omitted." (this includes graphs). Good job! at the same time, the textbook might as well tell every college student to go **** themselves! Sometimes the solutions doesn't even match the questions being asked. For instance Chapter 4.3 asked you write the basis of kernel, image, and the rank. On the back, each solution only has one answer, sometimes its a kernel, sometimes it is only the image, other times it's the matrix put into RREF. So unless you know how to do it and you gotten the problem right, the solutions won't help at all.

5. This last part consist the many ways how irritating the book can be. The books recycles a lot of the theorems and definitions. In Chapter 4.1, the examples are just a re-use of definitions and theorems from the previous chapters. Another things is that, some problems in the end are so tedious they tell you "You may use technology" (matlab?). Other times, the problems are too simple. Last but not least, some of the examples are written so it confuses you. Instead of a decent step-by-step answer, you get a cluttering of matrices and everything looks like a complete mess.

So let's recap:

1. Just a useless cluster of definition, theorems, and examples
2. Useless examples that don't help with the homework at all
3. Asking you to do proves as homework
4. Inconsistent Solutions
5. Inconsistent Solutions in the solutions manual
6. Lack of helpful solutions (no graphs)
7. Reusing the same theorems and definitions
8. Inconsistency in problem's difficulty
9. And a ton of other things!...

I can seriously go on and on about this pile of **** but it is starting to make my head hurt. This book isn't just bad, it is ****ing horrible. You don't learn anything, and what is worst, the book struggles you if you actually wanted to learn. If you designed a machine that turns things to opposite (black to white, big to small), you know what you will get by putting this book through that machine? The Holy Bible! This text book is a joke, the author clearly doesn't care if the students learn and he just wanted an easy cash-in. Unless you seriously have to take a class that requires this ****, only get this textbook used. I can't believe I have to put up with this textbook for another quarter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent undergraduate algebra
Excellent undergraduate algebra, with emphasis on examples and interaction with other areas of mathematics, a mixture of simplicity and sophistication. For those studying the book I recommend to take a look at the beautifulon-line lectures of Benedict Gross(Harvard)-based on Artin's book [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches instead of expounds
Not having the experience of listening to Artin lecture, one can only surmise that this man has to be a great teacher. The text does exaclty that -- it teaches and there are precious few that accomplish that objective as well, maybe none. Almost every theorem or proposition is placed in context and explained thoroughly with clear and concise examples and the themes are well articulated and consistent. There are many "surveys of modern algebra" that also have extensive scope but none touch the clarity of this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why You Should Get This Book Instead of Dummite & Foote
Artin's Algebra is a great book.It covers a good deal of introductory Algebra, leaving out some stuff, but ultimately covering everything you need to be able to move on to the next level, like Lang's Algebra. While Dummit & Foote is longer and covers more material than Artin, it is not as good an introductory book as Artin, and it's not as good as Lang for higher-level stuff.

Here's what I'd suggest:Get Artin then Lang.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly insightful, deliberately disorganized text
I wish to first point out that several positive reviewers argue that the strength of the book is what it forces you to look for and that if you cannot find the missing puzzle pieces you must be mathematically weak or studying poorly. The argument seems to be that the book's strength lies in that which is omitted.

This is a silly argument, but it is telling of the pedagogical philosophy and communication bias in the book. The purpose of a text book is to communicate, but Artin's lazy stream-of-consciousness style will leave many out in the cold.

Indeed, the book does seem to be written for those who do not need it, an enormous sequence of casual asides to a lost conversation between students already versed in the field and a professor intent on communicating in fits and starts, short growls and nods.

As one reviewer noted, the text derives from Artin's lecture notes. This is not uncommon, but the book shows little evidence of any thought put into making the book useful as a reference. Rather it has many gaps both large and small. It is what one might expect from putting in the least amount of editorial work and hastily typesetting the notes for publication.

In terms of original content, Artin provides important insights. Still, while I can imagine thinking "what does Artin have to say about (blank)", I cannot imagine bothering to search a book so deliberately and thoroughly written to make the reader ask and answer their own questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars A totally useless textbook.
The book by Artin was the most useless math textbook I have ever used. His proofs are impossible to understand, the exercises are frequently useless (either trivial results or monstrously tedious), and for the difficulty of the text to understand, the rigor of the presentation is astoundingly low (i.e. proving everything with matrices). His proving most of his statements with verbal exposition is also annoying as it makes it impossible to reference results in the book when solving problems. Also there are the times when an essential part of a problem is not even defined in the chapter but only in some other exercise. He also expects one to be able to compute character tables, but I had to look them up on mathworld to actually know how to do the computations. The book also tries to provide geometric examples, but does not explain them well or use them consistently. Also, there was a serious lack of diagrams, and when they existed they were unenlightening.I came into this class with a fairly strong background in Linear Algebra (Using Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right) and was highly annoyed by the topics that were left out (like tensors and duality) and the things that were overemphasized (rigid motions in the plane, change of basis).Another peeve is the statement that "most complex matrices are diagonalizable".What is the term "most" doing in a math textbook? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent but only a beginning algebra book
I love this book.I used it for once a week lessons for my gifted son, about age 11 or 12.He only finished about half of it,

but afterwards he won the state math counts competition with a perfect paper, as i recall.

This book, like all harold jacobs' books, treats the subject with respect, including the deep ideas,

and still makes it fun.One thing I had not noticed before however is that it is only a very elementary beginners' book.

them main ideas of algebra are not even mentioned, dividing polynomials, finding greatest common divisors,

properties of prime and relatively prime numbers, the factor theorem for polynomials, and the rational root theorem.

maybe those are called "precalculus" today.anyway it is excellent, but a kid needs more.

does jacobs' have another less elementary book on second year algebra?i have not seen one,

but i would welcome it.maybe more of my university calculus students would know basic background if he did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This is the best algebra book I have ever seen in my life, and I worked in a library for three years with access to countless algebra text books. This book doesn't assume that you already know much of the fundamentals of math or its vocabulary. It builds you from the ground up and reinforces what it teaches in its exercises. Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Easy to Understand Algebra
A great textbook, well organized that makes Elementary Algebra easy to understand and fun to teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon "The leader for all my textbook purchases"
Amazon is the leader for all my purchases when it comes to textbooks.Yes I may pay a little more, and lesser than purchasing them from their respective companies, and it is a brand new book!!!The transaction is EASY, and reliable!!I always get the product before promised. This last purchase, I received my textbook the day before it was suppose to be here!!

I don't have to WAIT for an email from the seller if I have questions!! Which can be days, and not a good thing when you need it prior to class starting!!That has happened to me MANY TIMES.Thanks Amazon!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Amazing
this is a really good book for people who are strugglingin algebra it gives u step by step instructions on how to master algebra problems.... my only complaint is i really like color pictures because it helps me better but thats personal preference but great book great price

5-0 out of 5 stars Several AHA! moments
This book does exactly what it promises - it helps the reader remember how to do all that Algebra that was once learned but has been long forgotten.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pre-MBA students
This book offers a quick and easy to understand review for all of us who studied calculus in the past (even though, I think that it's also quite appropriate for students with no prior experience in the subject). The method of pencil and paper and a lot of practice to do is, in my point of view, the right way to learn calculus - and this is the exact technique of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts right to the chase
This is a very fine little book.I've been away from the subject for many years and
my skills are coming back thanks to Professor Bleau.I especially like the general method
for factoring polynomials on page 143.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible edition
The idea behind this book is great but the book itself is frustrating with how many typos and errors are in the book. By unit 12 I had given up in frustration. One of the solutions midway into the problem they forgot the superscript on one of the powers, another they changed the problem from the one written in the back to a completely different power. One of the lessons had 15 written problems to do and 16 answers in the back of the book. And yet another, and my favorite, "Do these 16 problems by yourself" Just to have them skip flat out making a problem 7! ... Read more

Blitzer's philosophy: present the full scope of mathematics, while always (1) engaging the student by opening their minds to learning (2) keeping the student engaged on every page (3) explaining ideas directly, simply, and clearly so they don't get "lost" when studying and reviewing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for students who struggle to understand
Blitzer has done a great job breaking down the concepts of College Algebra. The examples are detailed and students are able to get immediate feedback on their understanding after each topic with what he calls "check points".I like the real-world applications for each lesson and the chapter test solutions on CD.I am a teacher using this book in a high school classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars dump price
I've seen this good book (4th edition) in many different h/b covers for only 9 euros in the "boekenfestival" clearance sales that occur regularly throughout Holland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy overall with everything
Delivery was excellent. Product Condition excellent, everything offered was in there, the CD that comes with this book was in there. The condition of the book was excellent. Very happy with the transaction overall. My mother wants her to buy a copy for her to help her granddaughter. Since this book give you a good foundation to understand algebra concepts. With a lot of exercise and example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Albebra Baldor
Un libro que nos ensena la Matematicas de una manera no tan complicada. Muy buen libro!

4-0 out of 5 stars CD Is Un-usable
The book is very different looking inside than the classic Algebra Baldor I used in high school in Panama. This is not a big deal however. The big deal at least for me and the main reason I got this book was for the FREE CD.

However the CD is totally useless because you need a password sent to you from the publisher and the publisher never writes you back with a password. So I am very disappointed.(Review written by Antonio).

5-0 out of 5 stars I protest! where is the Arabian guy!
This is the most feared book in Latinamerican high school!
Once you went through it, you WILL know everything in Algebra.
It is a total disrespect to pull Al Juarismi (the arabian guy) from the cover and insert this smiling fatty guy who no one knows.

There is quite a history and tradition with this book that NO student will ever forget :)

5-0 out of 5 stars TODA LA VIDA...UN BUEN LIBRO.
YO TUVE EN CASA LA EDICION ANTIGUA CON EL ARABE EN LA PORTADA, ESTA EDICION ES BASICAMENTE LA MISMA, SOLO QUE ACTUALIZA CIERTOS DATOS. COMO LA ATERIOR, ES FACIL DE ENTENDER Y CON MUCHOS EJERCICIOS PARA PRACTICAR.
LA PASTA ES DURA, LO CUAL HACE QUE EL LIBRO SE CONSERVE BIEN.TIENE BUEN COLORIDO AL INTERIOR Y BUENOS GRAFICOS.
LA COMPRE PORQUE ESTOY PREPARANDOME PARA TOMAR EL GRE (GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION), Y PUES LA VERDAD CREO QUE ME AYUDO MUCHISIMO PUES ME SIENTO BIEN PREPARADA PARA ABORDAR LA SECCION DE ALGEBRA DE ESTE TEST.

This seller was very fast. I asked for my item to be shipped right away and I got it two days later!!
I hope Im able to need more books that he/she is selling in the future thumbs up:))))))

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a Math Book
This is a math textbook for college. The end. It's a good book and shows some good examples...actually better examples and techniques than the kind my professor shows...which should say quite a bit but considering she's a horrible teacher, it's not saying a lot. Would I buy it again? Only if I had a class that required it.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good condition
