Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume focuses on two related questions that are central to both the psychology of mathematical thinking and learning and to the improvement of mathematics education:
What is the nature of arithmetic expertise?
How can instruction best promote it?

Contributors from a variety of specialities, including cognitive, developmental, educational, and neurological psychology; mathematics education; and special education offer theoretical perspectives and much needed empirical evidence about these issues.

As reported in this volume, both theory and research indicate that the nature of arithmetic expertise and how to best promote it are far more complex than conventional wisdom and many scholars, past and present, have suggested. The results of psychological, educational, and clinical studies using a wide range of arithmetic tasks and populations (including "normally" and atypically developing children, non-injured and brain-injured adults, and savants) all point to the same conclusion: The heart of arithmetic fluency, in general, and the flexible and creative use of strategies, in particular, is what is termed "adaptive expertise" (meaningful or conceptually based knowledge). The construction of adaptive expertise in mathematics is, for the first time, examined across various arithmetic topics and age groups.

This book will be an invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students interested in mathematical cognition and learning (including mathematics educators, developmental and educational psychologists, and neuropsychologists), educators (including teachers, curriculum supervisors, and school administrators), and others interested in improving arithmetic instruction (including officials in national and local education departments, the media, and parents).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I read this book and I also own it. It is very good. If you are a fan of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and other Holocoust or WWII books, then you'll just love this book! the movie is really good too. Kirsten Dunst does an excellant job in it. Again, this book is worth buying, or at least checking out of the local library!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Devil's Arthmetic Book Review By: Tim Dunn
"The Devil's Arithmetic" is about a young girl named Hannah who doesn't want to go to her family's Passover seder. While in the seder, she is aked to open a door for a tradition her family does. When she opens it she goes back in time to 1942 during her Aunt Eva's time when she is known as "Chaya", and is put into a concentration camp and realizes why passover is so important. My favorite part of the book was when Hannah was in the concentration camp.During this section of the book, Hannah meets new people, learns new rules and trys to survive her new living.During this part also, Hannah trys escaping ending up seeing her "brother" Yithzack get shot by the guards.I reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in historical events (especially world war 2).This book could be very hurtful to you if you believe strongly in Judaism because a lot of the nazis make fun of and yell at the Jewish people. This book also has a good moral representing that being with family and celebrations are important. This book is the type of book you cannot put down and it is very exciting. All in all, this book is very understanding and exciting. ... When I read the novel, The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, I was moved.I thought and thought about what approach I wanted to take when I introduced it to my 8th grade students. This teacher "tool" simplified my fears and made teaching the novel much easier and more significant to my students. The step by step guide is excellent forbeginner teachers as well as those who have taught the novel before. It gives insight to the Holocaust and examples of bringing difficult situations to a middle school level.I would recommend it to any language arts or history teacher who wishes to use this novel in the classroom and be successful in doing it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SOLID Arithmetic Book
As a homeschooling mom, I had a hard time finding a math program for my then fourth, now fifth grader.I'm so glad that a wise mom recommended Strayer-Upton.This is straight up, no frills arithmetic.Chock full of problems & drills for improving time, Book Two starts at a fifth grade level (6th grade starts on page 256) and moves through appropriate exercises in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as fractions and working with measurements, area, etc. Each new section explains how to do the work so that the child can work very independently (which my child LOVES).The answers are in the back of the book.It was written in 1934, so it's a bit dated but the arithmetic still applies (and it's interesting to see how much people could buy with just a few cents back then). <:) Book One covers 3rd and 4th grade. This is one solid math program, in my opinion.A pencil, a notebook, and Strayer-Upton are all a child needs to REALLY LEARN arithmetic and prepare for mathematics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Arithmetic Review for the GRE
This is a thorough review of Arithmetic concepts for the GRE.There are a few errors in the book, but most of them have been hand corrected by the publisher (they used a Sharpie to mark up the corrections...). The Problem Sets (within each section) are somewhat repetitive, however, they reinforce important concepts. The Author covers Integers, Fractions, Decimals, Exponents and Radicals in the finest of detail. For some reason Logarithms are not covered.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Builds a great math foundation
This is an excellent source for building a good math foundation for the Gre.This book had very few errors and was full of practice examples. In addition, every mathematical topic was explained in great detail. The only fault I found with the book is that it didn't really cover percentages, but the section of decimals and fractions sort of made up for that.Overall, a great resource for those with less than stellar math backgrounds. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Ideal for graduate and senior undergraduate courses in computer arithmetic and advanced digital design, Computer Arithmetic: Algorithms and Hardware Designs, Second Edition, provides a balanced, comprehensive treatment of computer arithmetic. It covers topics in arithmetic unit design and circuit implementation that complement the architectural and algorithmic speedup techniques used in high-performance computer architecture and parallel processing. Using a unified and consistent framework, the text begins with number representation and proceeds through basic arithmetic operations, floating-point arithmetic, and function evaluation methods. Later chapters cover broad design and implementation topics-including techniques for high-throughput, low-power, fault-tolerant, and reconfigurable arithmetic. An appendix provides a historical view of the field and speculates on its future.

An indispensable resource for instruction, professional development, and research, Computer Arithmetic: Algorithms and Hardware Designs, Second Edition, combines broad coverage of the underlying theories of computer arithmetic with numerous examples of practical designs, worked-out examples, and a large collection of meaningful problems. This second edition includes a new chapter on reconfigurable arithmetic, in order to address the fact that arithmetic functions are increasingly being implemented on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and FPGA-like configurable devices. Updated and thoroughly revised, the book offers new and expanded coverage of saturating adders and multipliers, truncated multipliers, fused multiply-add units, overlapped quotient digit selection, bipartite and multipartite tables, reversible logic, dot notation, modular arithmetic, Montgomery modular reduction, division by constants, IEEE floating-point standard formats, and interval arithmetic.

Features:

* Divided into 28 lecture-size chapters
* Emphasizes both the underlying theories of computer arithmetic and actual hardware designs
* Carefully links computer arithmetic to other subfields of computer engineering
* Includes 717 end-of-chapter problems ranging in complexity from simple exercises to mini-projects
* Incorporates many examples of practical designs
* Uses consistent standardized notation throughout
* Instructor's manual includes solutions to text problems

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I received the book within 3 days of the order. It was in an excellent shape. The book itself is in a great shape and explains the material beautifully.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is not for people who want to learn anything.
I just finished a course that used this book and I was so disgusted with the book that I felt a review was necessary. It seems that this book was written for people who already have a background in computer algorithms. The examples, where rarely provided, leave out basic information necessary to comprehend the material. The author uses notation and figures without explaning how to read them. I learned almost nothing form this book and would not suggest it to anyone. In fact, if this author has written any other books, I would stay away from them as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very superficial look at computer arithmetic
Although the author does a good job at explaining arithmetic in the areas of RNS and SD arithmetic, the other topics are done very superficially. The book is a good reference, but you can find better books on understanding computer arithmetic.

1-0 out of 5 stars The WORST book there is!
I think 2 stars rating for this book are more than it deserves.
I've bought many technical books and learned them on my own but
I've never seen a book that is so bad. Having this as class text
book and coupling with a not so good instructor, you really gets
it coming. PLEASE, STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK!
there many good books on this subject out there, don't torture
yourself and waste money on this terrible book. The bottom line is, the
author tries to make subjects more complicated than they
really are.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the ASIC architect.
I found this book to be extremely helpful in my every-day work.No where else have I found such a concise and accurate description of hardware-friendly number systems and arithmetic algorithms. It's the first place I go when I have a an arithmetic-intensive algorithm to architect.Simply put, my designs got better after I got this book. ... Product Description
William Petty (1623-1687) was a key figure in the English colonization of Ireland, the institutionalization of experimental natural philosophy, and the creation of social science.

Examining Petty's intellectual development and his invention of "political arithmetic" against the backdrop of the European scientific revolution and the political upheavals of Interregnum and Restoration England and Ireland, this book provides the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Petty based on a thorough examination not only of printed sources but also of Petty's extensive archive and pattern of manuscript circulation. It is also the first fully contextualized study of what political arithmetic--widely seen as an ancestor of modern social and economic analysis--was originally intended to do.

Ted McCormick traces Petty's education among French Jesuits and Dutch Cartesians, his early work with the "Hartlib Circle" of Baconian natural philosophers, inventors, and reformers in England, his involvement in the Cromwellian conquest and settlement of Ireland, and his engagement with both science and the politics of religion in the Restoration. He argues that Petty's crowning achievement, political arithmetic, was less a new way of analyzing economy or society than a new "instrument of government" that applied elements of the new science--a mechanical worldview, a corpuscularian theory of matter, and a Baconian stress on empirical method and the transformative purposes of natural philosophy--to the creation of industrious and loyal populations. Finally, he examines the transformation Petty's program of social engineering, after his death, into an apparently apolitical form of statistical reasoning. ... Read more

Product Description
Standards in numeracy are a constant concern to educational policy-makers. However, why are differences in arithmetical performance so marked? In Individual Differences in Arithmetic, Ann Dowker seeks to provide a better understanding of why these differences in ability exist, encouraging a more informed approach to tackling numeracy difficulties.

This book reviews existing research by the author and by others on the subject of arithmetical ability and presents strong evidence to support a componential view of arithmetic. Focusing primarily on children, but including discussion of arithmetical cognition in healthy adult and neuropsychological patients, each of the central components of arithmetic are covered. Within this volume, findings from developmental, educational, cognitive and neuropsychological studies are integrated in a unique approach. This book covers subjects such as:

DT Counting and the importance of individual differences
DT Arithmetic facts, procedures and different forms of memory
DT Causes of, and interventions with, mathematical difficulties
DT The effects of culture, language and experience

The educational implications of these findings are discussed in detail, revealing original insights that will be of great interest to those studying or researching in the areas of education, neuroscience and developmental and cognitive psychology. ... Read more

Product Description

Melanie is a mother and a lover, middle-aged, eccentric, courageous, and often hilariously unpredictable. She’s also deeply scarred by her internment as a child in Drancy, a Nazi detention camp. Through the humanity and friendship of an English boy, Christopher Lewis, and her self-appointed protector, Jakob Bronski, Melanie managed to survive. Forty years later, Jakob, now a frail, well-known Soviet dissident, and Christopher, a writer who’s never forgotten the young Melanie, reenter her life. Memories of the past, coupled with her husband’s infidelity, upset Melanie’s precarious emotional stability, forcing her to confront the absurdity of trying to balance good and evil, guilt and love, duty and desire. With its finely drawn characters, rich humanity, and rare wit, Emotional Arithmetic is a novel of memory and hope, offering an unforgettable look at how the shadows of the past illuminate the present.
