This is a very good learning tool: simple language instruction, lots of examples and problems, all with step-by-step explanations.No frustrating 'big jumps'in ether the examples or the problems-the provided answers make absolute sense.Learning never was so much fun.

Great, easy to understand review
For a calculus textbook, this is really easy to follow. There is minimal theoretical explanation and lots of examples to help you learn the material. It's been 12 years since I took calculus, and this book almost makes it feel easy! Highly recommended reading for someone going back to school who needs to brush up.

Lightweight, your mileage might vary....
I bought this and its companion book, Forgotten Algebra, in the hopes of shoring up math skills for engineering and physics classes. This is not a useful book for such. It gets about as far as the chain rule and some simple multivariable stuff, with an emphasis on biz apps. My mistake, the book is likely fine for most readers just wanting a quick refresh of the very bssics.

Mathmaster
An outstanding job by the author in explaining the complex subject of Calculus in a simple step by step manner. The narration and graphic detail is impressive. Students of the subject need this book as a supplement to any course textbook because it does a much better job of explaining everything in detail. Many Calculus textbooks are notorious for leaving out details thus leaving many students confused and frustrated. This book is really a gem and deserves the best rating available - five stars.

Extraordinarily Comprehensive and Clear
This books over-takes any other Calculus book by leaps and bounds. I took neither a Pre-Calculus nor AP-Calculus course, yet I found myself easily understanding everything.The tone of the book is playful, yet at the same time informative.The book after all is there to teach you about Calculus, NOT random tidbits of entertaining information.Of course there are some chapters that require one or two reviews but that is fairly expected since after all, it's Calculus!

In addition, this book has 48 hours worth of video-lectures, corresponding to actual chapters, to watch. I mean, where else could you get that?

I guess the greatest compliment I could pay this book would be to say that my once irrational fear and distaste for anything to do with functions, has slowly been replaced by a feeling of friendly acquaintance, and that my initial intimidation by the very word "Calculus", has been overcome by a sense of puzzlement at my previous unfounded apprehension.

As you can probably tell, I can't recommend this book strongly enough. If you have no idea what Calculus is except for the fact that it would be cool to Master, this is definitely the book for you.

This is a Very Good and Interesting Book
I purchased The Calculus Lifesaver book written by Adrian Banner when I discovered that my knowledge of Calculus was beginning to get a bit rusty and I wanted to clear up some of the mathematical cob webs in my head.

I read Mr. Banner's book cover to cover in a little less than 4 weeks.The book has 30 chapters consisting of 702 pages and has 46 pages of appendices.

Although the book illustrates each mathematical subject area with a great many solved problems, it does not contain any problem sets that are specifically intended for the reader to solve.This could be a draw back for some and it probably prevents this book from being used as a class room text, but for my purposes it worked well.

Mr. Banner gives an in depth treatment of all the standard stuff like limits, differentiation, integration, Taylor and MacLaurin series, and he gives an overview of topics such as parametric equations, complex numbers, arc lengths, surface areas, and volumes and differential equations.

All in all I feel that this book was well written, easy to read, and interesting.Mr. Banner's approach is quite different from the classical, almost stuff shirt approach that was typical of the math books that I used way back in my under grad days. He does interject some colorful language from time to time which initially surprised me, and then later on amused me, and always kept me interested.

This is an excellent book for those students looking for a second source to review for an up coming midterm exam.Treatment of specific subject areas is clear, concise and can be read and understood in short order.

This is an excellent book for people like my self who need to quickly come back up to speed on subjects that may have become a bit clouded over the years.

This also is an excellent book for people who are learning Calculus for the first time.If you are in the process of learning Calculus the key to really understanding the subject is to work countless problems until the mechanics, concepts, and procedures are firmly ingrained in your mind.For these people I strongly recommend a companion text called "The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems" by W. Michael Kelly. A serious student could learn the concepts and procedures from Mr. Banner's book and then work many of the one thousand problems provided in Mr. Kelly's book to gain proficiency.

After having read Mr. Banner's book, would I purchase this book again?The answer is a definite yes.The money was well spent.

I am anxiously awaiting to see some follow on books from Mr. Banner treating the subjects of Differential Equations and Complex Variables.

5 Stars.This book finally makes calculus comprehensible.
I have reviewed dozens of calculus textbooks, and all are noble attempts at communicating something that is problematic for many students in simple-enough terms to be comprehensible.But most calculus textbooks books fail in their effort at simple communication.This book succeeds in that effort marvelously.The examples are worked through thoroughly so that when the reader has finished a section, he actually understands it.The concept of a function is explained as a sort of "machine" that transforms an input into an output.The concept of a limit is again clearly explained more simply and straightforwardly than I have seen it explained anywhere.The book is nevertheless non-trivial; it is solid and certainly not a "Calculus for Dummies" book.It is an easily understood but substantive introduction to calculus.If you've tried calculus several times using other books and in the end given up because the authors inevitably lost you at some unmarked turn in the road, get this book and give it a one more try.I think you'll find you are impressed with the resulting clarity of your understanding.Adrian Banner is gifted at explaining calculus.

A perfect calculus companion
Wow, I just finished reading the book. Great worked out examples throughout the book simply enhanced the coverage of the subject. I am a working engineer and wanted to review my calculus and bought this book. I learned more calculus than when I actually took a regular calculus course. This book is accompanied by video lectures by Mr. Banner, which are freely available on the book website. Video lectures are closely followed from the book and supplement the book very well. In the book, theorems are justified either in the appendix or in the same chapter. Good, close to best choice for a two-semester calculus choice
As an instructor at a small college, I am called on to teach nearly every course in the math and computer science departments. Therefore, my reasons for examining this book were to determine the suitability as a text for our calculus courses. In that regard, I found it suitable for a two-course sequence in beginning calculus.
Compared to nearly all other texts, it is quite short, on the order of 500 pages. Therefore, it does not contain enough material for a three-course sequence. The coverage is basic differentiation and integration with a final section that is an introduction to differential equations. Exercises with solutions to odd-numbered ones are included. The following is a list of positive features of this book:

*) Very little time is spent in the review of precalculus topics. In my opinion, using a lot of ink to review mathematical basics is a waste of ink. If the students don't have it by now, they shouldn't be in the course.
*) Very little time is spent in "using technology" sections. Some books try to do the Mathematica, Maple and Excel triad, showing how to solve problems using all three. While I recognize the value of technology, I also know that learning the concepts of calculus is challenging enough without throwing in the technology. If you know the calculus concepts, learning the technology is easy, but if you don't know the calculus, then the technology is of little value.
*) Proofs of selected theorems are included in an appendix. This allows instructors to pick and choose which proofs to cover and which to leave out. One criticism I have leveled against other calculus books is that proofs of the major concepts are not included. My approach is that while not all proofs should be examined, there are times when a proof should be presented and thoroughly dissected. Even though many of the calculus students will not go on in math, calculus is still a math course and math is based on proofs.
*) Several worked examples are included when every new concept is introduced.

At this point, I consider this the best calculus text available if all you are interested in is a book for a two-course sequence. However, if you would prefer one text for the standard three-course sequence, then you will have to look elsewhere.

Great book.
I, personally, love this series of books.You are not likely to learn calculus from it, but it is good for review (I recommend reading it before your class or before the lecture on a particular subject) or if you are just looking for an alternate explanation to a topic or technique.It was a big help in my studies.

Calculus now makes sense!
I am graduate student in Pharmacy, but had to take Calculus as prerequisite for more complicated classes, like Differential Equation and Physical Chemistry. Although I had very basic Calculus in my undergraduation program, it didn't make sense to me. I borrowed this book from a friend and started reading in paralel with textbook. Calculus is now becoming funny!!!! I strongly reccomend this book for those who does not understand what genious say in common textbooks! I really would like to find other Streetwise Guides like this one in other areas, like statistics, etc!!!!

Students of calculus often find that they "don't understand" what the textbook is saying, what the teacher is saying, what the problem is saying/asking. This book explains the mathematics with integrity and humor. Over the past several years I am sure that more than a hundred of my students have purchased this book and the prequel, How to Ace Calculus, and to a one they all love it! When the stuff in class doesn't hang together we all turn to "Colin and friends" to see how they explain it.

Saved Me in Calc II !!!!
This book is great.Provides a solid foundation for the concepts in calc 2, explains the whys, and puts them all into perspective.Was more helpful than my prof or my textbook!Highly recommend...helps SO much.

Calculus made Fun!
Although I read this book over two years ago, I still use it as a reference. Instead of just doing the math of a vector field, multiple integral or divergence of something and calling it a day, they give you real life examples of how to apply the just learned math. The best part is the examples are really funny, but I once took a memorization class and your suppose to make up goofy stuff so its so dumb that you do remember it. Opaque; provides little context; all but useless to the freshman
Little explanation or background is provided to orient the student; the book assumes the reader has been using trigonometry and algebra on a daily basis for the better part of adulthood. An example of this is the section on rates and related rates (4.6). There are two paragraphs given in the way of explanation:

"Derivatives represent rates of change. In this section, we see how to calculate rates in a variety of situations."

And...

"In Example 1, the radius of the snowball decreased at a constant rate. A more realistic scenario is for the radius to decrease at different rates at different times. Then, we may not be able to write a formula for V as a function of t. However, we may still be able to calculate dV/dt, as in the following example."

No mention of how the process of working related rates problems is similar to implicit differentiation. No step-by-step outline of a general way to go about working this category of problem. Just examples outside of any framework.

Better for a refresher in Calculus for graduate students than a freshman-level course. I used Stewart's "Calculus: Concepts and Contexts" to learn how to do the assigned work from this text.

Don't think the solutions manual will help--only a subset of the odd problems in the text are described and the explanations are often wanting.

Extremely unhelpful
This book is terrible. Learning Calculus with the "aid" of this textbook was painful and unproductive. Examples are short, lack explanation, and are too specific to be applied to any other exercises. Simply awful. Fortunately my college is switching back to Steward's calculus book, which is like heaven compared to this book. The only acceptable use for this book is toilet paper, and even then it is horrible.

I love calculus!
I was pleasantly surprised with this book, the previous book from the same publisher, "Functions Modeling Change" I found to be confusing. BUT "Single Variable" is a great book. Of course lecture is the best way to learn a math class, especially anything more difficult than algrebra. But when I missed a class I was able to pick up where we left off from the instruction in the book. The problems were not as abstract as calculus problem can be. Overall I am glad this was my textbook, but I am also a math major so I may be bias.

A really really dry calculus book
While I do not expect calculus to be much other than dry, this text was especially difficult to read and follow.The chapters were very short but that is probably because the explanations were so brief.The problems were not broken down into easy to understand steps at all.Considering that this is a Calculus I book I, and other classmates, felt that there could have been a lot more explanation on the problems.I did, however, take the course online, so there was also no actual discussion involved in my learning.That said, I do not think that the book is effective for independent learning at all.

A Bad Book
This book is terrible. I used it for both calc 1 and 2. The University of Connecticut used this book for 3 semesters and than decided it was junk. Most of the math department hated the book and for the spring 07 semester they switched to the James Stewart book which is used for multivariable.

The problems are very hard and often the chapter does not show how to solve or give you strageties to solve them, the book does nothing well and is just an expensive paper back book with a horrible solution manual. ... Read more

Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 5th edition, by James Stewart
I teach high school Calculus, AP Physics, and Chemistry. Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 5th edition, by James Stewart is an indispensable resource of accurate, cogent, well explained, and therefore understandable information for my students. Unlike most calculus textbooks, each chapter provides many pertinent problems applicable to solving real world scientific and engineering problems. However, most students, if forced to assimilate this book on their own (because of a poor teacher), will feel overwhelmed by the enormous wealth of material contained therein. I commend the author for a monumental work and thank him for the help it provides educators and students alike. I recommend this book to anyone serious about understanding calculus and applying its dynamic elegance to real world problems.

I used this book for 3 consecutive calculus classes and the book was good when I had a good instructor who taught from the book.When I took the series III of calculus, I had a bad teacher who didn't teach from the book, and the examples in the book were not very helpful when it came time to do homework.I would strongly suggest getting the solutions manual if you have a crappy teacher, otherwise you'll get confused on how to solve the moderate to difficult problems. ... Brief but adequate for understanding the concepts.
This book is pretty nice. It provides you a lot useful concepts with brief explanation. Your job is to study and do the homework to digest that such concepts ( you'd better have a solution book that comes along with it). Don't blame for the book not covering everything as you expected, like other science courses, you should have a fair understanding the basics before go up to higher level.

average textbook
This is your average math textbook.I haven't had any problems with it.It gives pretty good examples and explanations for each section.

My advice - don't do it alone.
This book is good because it give you clear (easy) examples of the material it is explaining. The practice problems are also very good because they start off from the most basic then progress to advanced. This books has a lot of practical real world problems. Some of the material can be difficult at times, that's why I suggest you purchase "3,000 Solved Problems in Calculus (Schaums Solved Problems Series)" in addition to this book. The Solved Problems Series helps when you're studying quick examples just before the test.

Advanced Calculus... for dummies
I attended the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, and this book was issued to me.It has got to be the most helpful, easily understood, and well written calculus books ever to find its way to a school.The illustrations help visual learners to "see" what a formula looks like in three dimensions in latter chapters, and the practice sets go in order of necessity of learning (i.e. - early problems develop skills necessary to answer later problems, with no monotonous repetition of the same concepts as in most math books). It also has reference pages for basic formulas, so it becomes an invaluable tool for later calculus classes.

The Best of the Best
I have taught calculus for over 20 years, from about half a dozen books:Thomas, Swokowski, Anton, Stewart, and others. Two years ago our universityadopted the 6th Edition of Larson. As a pedagodical tool, this text is headand shoulders about all the others. Was just what I needed and saved!
I am only going to take Calculus 1 and saw that the Calculus edition was around $200.00 and was a HUGE textbook. I didn't need that. All I needed was the basic to get me through the first course. And I found it for only 115.00 including shipping and handling. I saved a lot and it was worth it.

Horrible....
I am taking Calc II and am using this book. This book is horrible! I missed a lecture and when I tried doing the homework I got stuck. There are no example like the examples. I am here on this site to buy companion book so that I can do better on my homework. I wish they would stop using this book at university level courses.

Great Entrance Exam Refresher
I received this book 2 weeks before my college entrance exam to smooth over what I momentarily learned in high school I Do not want to end up in a lower than Calculus math class, paying for a class that does not give me any college credit. So far I have been getting through a chapter each day, in about hour and a half of on and off study.

It is continuing to get me more comfortable with my math skills in a very short time. I Recommend it to anyone who fears there college entrance exam, or interested in learning Precalc on their own.

At last. At long last
I am one of those pathetic cases who should have been a math major, but could not stay awake during the freshman pre-calc lectures conducted by bored and boring grad students. Now, nearly 40 years later I am determined to self-educate my way through calculus.

At first I took a crack at the Wiley "Precalculus A Self Teaching Guide". Holy cripes, what a disaster! Unnerving to find such an improbable number of errors, especially for student picking up after decades of non-study.

Then, I grabbed Rhonda Huettenmeuller's fine work, and am doing the practice at the end of chapter four. I actually remembered some of my advanced algebra and managed to work my way through the problems.

Well written and clear, she provides enough dimensions on problems to give you insight, then gives you room enough to have to think a bit. The answers are all provided, and are *correct*. Well, at least we agree, so that is certainly a good sign.

I especially appreciate how she teaches this from the perspective of tackling calculus as the next step, pointing out issues that particularly apply, and how, to more advanced mathematics.

Now, if we can just get her to write more books...

Actually 4 1/2 Stars for a wonderful book...
Greetings! I have to agree with the other reviewers, this book has just about everything needed... nice layout, clear explanations, correct answers and clear examples. The author's talent for teaching and obvious experience teaching shines in the examples. They are put forth in plain language, and amply illustrated by graphs where applicable. The teaching is done mostly through examples. The basic format is: basic theory, illustration of theory through numerous examples, practice, chapter review. By virtue of the step-by-step explanations, this book really does make it possible to learn the fundamentals of precalculus on your own.

About the 4 1/2 stars; my main gripe about this book (and I admit, I may be a little unreasonable with this) is that it doesn't have enough practice material. I personally prefer lots of practice material to become 'fluent' in the math at hand. Also, a cautionary note; this book is probably most useful to the person looking to master the manipulatives of pre-calc, that is, doing the rote processes of solving equations. If you are enrolled in a class with a very rigorous teacher who likes to emphasize theory or uses a lot of set notation, you might want to look for another book. (A good book, if you can find it, is College Algebra, 7th. ed. by Sparks and Rees. It covers every bit of material covered by this book and more theory besides.) I am not trying to emphasize minutiae, just to describe the book accurately. Thanks for bearing with me and I hope this review helps.

*Superb* Self-Teaching Instrument
I applaud Rhonda Huettenmueller and whole heartedly agree with the R. Orchanian review (the New York teacher). The very best available that absolutely takes the mystery out of this area of mathematics. The sequence of the chapters is superb, clear, concise and very, very accurate. It includes process steps that are left out of many *so called* self-teaching guides which leaves many students scratching their head. Just quite simply the very best book written on the subjct, hands down. I hope Ms. Huettenmueller doesn't stop here.

A good PRACTICE guide- not a way to first learn the topic....
I bought this book and several others to help my daughter with her AP calculus.Along those lines, this book is not very useful as the AP examiners have gone off and deviated from the traditional bread and butter calculus topics (volumes of revolution, techniques of integration, related rates, max/min/inflection points, etc.). They have fallen in love with calculating averages, the fundmaental theorem of calculus, and their calculators (see my other reviews).So if your buying this book for that purpose, it won't really help as this book covers only traditional techniques and topics without the need of a calculator.

HOWEVER, for a supplement to traditional class material, this is a great book.I agree with the prior reviewers that this is not a book that will teach you calculus from the start - you need to already know how to take a derivative and integrate, what is meant by a volume of revolution, related rate, and so forth.However, if you want EXCELLENT scores, practice is the key and this book gives you a lot of practice.After a while, you will realize that there are only so many variations on a particular topic that can be tested and they keep coming up over and over again (I orginally took calculus in the 1980's and ran across the same problems).

In summary, if you need to first learn the basics of the material, this book is not for you. If you already know the basics and want practice on the bread and butter topics, this is an excellent way to do so.I doubt that your instructor will give you problems not covered in some fashion in this book.

Be very careful!
If you want a reference book, this ain't it. Nor a textbook. You must understand the concepts before you even open the volume. It would then be a great help in applying your knowledge to real-world problems.

I say, "would" because the numerous typos and mistakes make it a dangerous tool to use. Some errors are obvious (if annoying), some will mislead and puzzle you and some, well... just pray.

I give it a three because it may still be useful. Just be careful how you use it!

Save your money
Every year a new class of desperate students buy into the Schaum no-help books.Save your money or try Michael Kelley.

Not Much Better Than a Solutions Manual
I purchased this for a Calculus II course because the book I had had some rather challenging problems. I bought it because I thought it was going to be exhaustive in its solutions. Unfortunately this was not the case. Some problems in calculus require less explanation that others. For this book however essentially all are given the same weight. Because of this you are left with a "how in the world did they come up with that?" type of feeling at the end of the problem. It is a good book however and the sheer number of problems solved is helpful when you have very specific things in your homework you need to see. Also there are general lessons on the topic before each chapter. This is a good resource but should be used in conjunction with other calculus books.

Forget this, if you want the best and most comprehensive TRY

Well written for the beginner
This book is great for the person new to Calculus as I was at the time I went through an earlier version.The examples are well written, with the steps easy to follow.Interim steps to the result are not skipped as has been the case with other Calculus books I've read.The book begins very simply, so someone with just algebra can follow.I can not overstate the importance of working through the problems though, that was the only way I came to appreciate Calculus.What I liked most about this book was that it had alot of applications to real life, using economic, business and science examples.I learn best when I can apply the information directly to my work, and this text did a good job of allowing me to do that.

I would also like to state that the way some of the word problems are stated can be misleading.Section 7.6, problem 17, for example is a maximizing problem and if one applies the approach suggested in the book, then area is not maximized, because more area can be derived by applying the circumference to a circle.

Stewart FTW
This book is worth every penny. Stewart is recognized as one of the best calculus texts available among professors at my community college.

Its a typical math book
Its nth special... a book which covers what you need for calc III but the explanations arent the easiest to understand... Their are lots of questions though which makes it a good book for practice... They should make some of their explanations more clearer and I would have given it 4 stars.

Stewart Solution Manual for Calculus
This is NOT the solution manual for the second half of Stewart's Calculus, 5th Edition (Thomson Publishing).It's part 2 for an earlier (obsolete?) calculus book.If you need the solution's manual for Edition 5, order Dan Clegg's Student Solutions Manual for James Stewart's (Multivariable) Calculus (Thomson Publishing, 2003).

Not too bad...
I thought the text wasn't too bad, but considering the material until about chapter 17 was quite easy, that is really not saying much. The book didn't give appropriate examples of all the different special cases of line and surface integrals, which made 17.3-17.7 quite difficult; I had to learn surface integrals elsewhere. This book wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Perfect book to study calculus
I was too tired of pre-calc class, so i decided to self-taught calculus.

Required for classes
If I had to learn solely from this book, I would not know anything about calculus. This book is a great tool for professors to supplement their teachings, but not very good as a stand alone if you are trying to learn on your own. There are lots of examples throughout many of the chapters that skip crucial steps and of course the even problems are much harder than the odds which have answers in the back. I'm mostly glad that this book covers three semesters of math credit at my community college.

Rewarding Book
If you want to learn integration techniques and become a whiz at basic computational calculus, you need another book.If you want a book that gives you a lot of proofs and tons of examples, you also probably need another book.

So why do I give the book 4 stars?The answer is _the problems_.I used this book for 3 semesters of calculus, and I felt like I actually discovered a lot of the machinery of calculus just by doing the problems.It's a great feeling to discover rather than be taught.That's what this book helps you do.

Of course, this means you will probably have to do a few more problems than the teacher assigns (unless the teacher is very in tune with the book and knows exactly which problems are related).Also, when you get to techniques of integration, you'll probably need to refer to other books for examples.

Another downside is the cost.But, unfortunately, that's a problem with all American text books.

Oh and about the book and solution manual not giving many solutions... Don't worry about it.When you solve most of these problems, you _know_ when you get the answer because everything will click and make sense.This is a fun book for problem solvers.

Used it for Calc1 , 2, and 3
It was a nice value, having bought the book new, that I was able to use it for three classes.The book itself, however, needs a lot of help.I agree that it does under explain and then do a lot of examples.The problem is that the examples are often nothing like the exercises in the book.They are often oversimplified or overly complicated compared to the exercises used as homework.The student solution manual is good for what problems it has.But with only every other odd, there are not nearly enough.

Mathmatica is used with this book.Which is nice, if you enjoy using a computer program that is not as good at a TI-89 graphing calculator. ... Read more

Lots of problems, no solutions
I don't know about you, but I buy Schaum books so I can have a large number of problems to work with answers so I know when I'm doing it right.My great frustration is people who say "don't look at the answers or you'll never learn the material".BS.That's fine for people with good highschool math preparation, but when you're striving to overcome the legacy of miserable math teachers in US public schools, it fails miserably.I can spend hours on a problem and still not get it.I think the problem for people like me is that we just don't know the language or know how to think about mathematics.Hence I'm giving the book 1 star.I'm looking for a supplement to an obtuse text for an advance calculus course, not another obtuse text.

Ideal (solved examples) companion to your calculus textbook
If you are studying calculus, the books from Schaum will certainly help you to develop your problem solving ability.

This is NOT a real analysis textbook inspired on Bourbaki topology. So that some readers do not consider the material really advanced. I think they were expecting 18 ways to express the Axiom of Choice (Zorn Lemma for example) Godel conjecture, Fixed point theorems, path and non-path conected sets, differential forms, more terminology (homeomorphism, diffeomorphism, manifolds) etc...

The book has an approach similar to Piskunov or G.B. Thomas Junior books, that is, more elementary approaches (but note that elementary does not mean easy). Many solved problems.

Look at table of contents inside the book at amazon to grasp an idea of what you will get.

Overall, very good companion, practical and with many examples.

Not what I expected
This is a good book if you are not looking for true advanced calculus material.This is just calculus--with some tougher topics, but is not a true advanced calculus book (which is much more proof based).

A Different Take on Advanced Calculus
After finishing the first 3 semesters of what is basically applied Calculus, majors in pure mathematics part company with their fellow students and move on to what is called "advanced calculus" or "functional analysis". This jump to the next level of mathematics, in which basically students have to be taught calculus all over again from a rigorous proof-based method, is a rude awakening to many. Most textbooks used in this situation, such as those by Rudin, assume that a talented and enthusiastic instructor will be acting as tour guide for the student, and will fill in the gaps. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This Schaum's outline works well for such a situation. It not only covers what you would expect to see in undergraduate analysis, it mixes proofs with solved numerical problemsand applications so that the student does not get bogged down or bored as can be the case with many of the texts on the subject that have nothing but proofs as exercises. In that way, it is unconventional in its treatment of the subject. Also, it provides more explanation and tutorial than you will find in the average Schaum's outline, and is pretty good at illustrating the correct way to perform a proof. If you can afford it, an excellent companion text to this Schaum's outline is Abbott's "Understanding Analysis", which can be used for self teaching of analysis because it is so detailed and clear.

Helpful for those who need to bridge the knowledge gaps
If you're trying to understand a lot of the abstracts in calculus that you might have missed in high school or are tired of college professors simply skipping past material because they assume you've already come across it even when it might not have been the case, then never fear. This book can help refresh your skills in areas that you may have forgotten or might have received little if any attention. Plus, chapter after chapter, even the most difficult concepts are made easier to understand in layman's terms.
