4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good...
I really like the prerequisites sections because it reviews important intermediate algebra that you'll use in pre-calc. It's nice to flip to each section to get a quick reminder of the rules. I'm at the end of chapter 3 now and so far I really like this book but the advanced language could be a little difficult at times so there are some things that just go in one ear and out the other. In addition to this book I also have the solutions manual and the dvd from the publishers website. I really like the dvd since the things I sort of understand after reading the book is clarified after watching the section on the dvd. I wish every math book had a dvd to compliment the material. As for the solutions manual, sometimes it skips algebra assuming you already know how it's solved which is fine but sometimes it's a tricky problem so it would be useful to see the mid-steps as well.

All in all it's a great book. I'd recommend buying the book early to review the prerequisite sections before your school semester starts. ... Read more

Three components contribute to a theme sustained throughout the Coburn Series: that of laying a firm foundation, building a solid framework, and providing strong connections.Not only does Coburn present a sound problem-solving process to teach students to recognize a problem, organize a procedure, and formulate a solution, the text encourages students to see beyond procedures in an effort to gain a greater understanding of the big ideas behind mathematical concepts. Written in a readable, yet mathematically mature manner appropriate for college algebra level students, Coburn's Algebra & Trigonometry uses narrative, extensive examples, and a range of exercises to connect seemingly disparate mathematical topics into a cohesive whole.Coburn's hallmark applications are born out of the author's extensive experiences in and outside the classroom, and appeal to the vast diversity of students and teaching methods in this course area.Benefiting from the feedback of hundreds of instructors and students across the country, Algebra & Trigonometry second edition, continues to emphasize connections in order to improve the level of student engagement in mathematics and increase their chances of success in college algebra. ... "Less is more." When students have only six to eight weeks to review for the Regents exam and they have to remember so many topics, what can the teacher offer to help? They won't be able to review the 800 page textbooks or even the 400 page review books. Our students need an efficient review kit that is concise, yet contains all the important mathematical concepts and their applications. This book will help students remember all the key topics and build their problem solving skills through the use of examples. This review book is geared towards helping students succeed with high scores on the Regents exams. I have already used these review sheets with my own Regents classes and I have seen firsthand that their performance is significantly higher than the statewide average. Both teachers and students like these review sheets because they are practical.This book contains three courses in one: Integrated Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry. It also serves as a handy reference guide for math teachers and college students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book
I found this book to be an excellent regents review book for all math regents.The term "less is more"
applies nicely to this guide. Key formulas and thoroughly worked out examples cover the major topics.
The use of one book that covers Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry is an excellent idea.Students can use
this book over many years.I look forward to reading and using other guides by Mr. Gu for additional
mathematical courses.I highly recommend this review guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Choice Math Regents Review by Henry Gu
I would recommend this book to any high school math teacher and would also
recommend itto any other level math teacher or student who wishes to review key facts, terms, definitions. The examples used are totally appropriate for review
of the 3 courses presently offered in NYS high schools.Mr. Gu was able to cover
every topic with clear explanations and diagrams in a concise manner.I use the review book for test review and as a guide in making up tests. I also use some
of the problems in lessons so as not leave any part of a topic out of the lesson.
Mr. Gu has successfully covered everything in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II
and Trigonometry in a paperback book which is convenient to carry and refer to at any time. I highly recommend it.Martha Blitzer, math teacher

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning on your own!
This book is good for brushing up on skills or teaching yourself some things before a test, I liked it alot and brought more books in the "smart" series.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away From This Book!!!!!!
This book is HORRIBLE!Almost 70% of the answers provided in the back of each chapter for checking your work are wrong.I have even checked the book's wrong answers through an independent tutor who confirmed that the book's answers were wrong in almost all instances.Unfortunately, the chapters with the most errors are the ones covering the more difficult subjects!This book will have you doubting your ability to do math in a matter of chapters.Stay away!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Review book, but don't buy it to learn new information
I bought this book a few years ago, and I was like, wow! now I get to learn all about trigonometry and inequalities and polynomials! gee whiz! but reading it, I found that the explanations weren't deep enough to actually TEACH me the concepts, that there weren't enough excercizes for people new to the algebra, and it wasn't until I finished my Algebra 1 class last year that I could fully understand the topics covered in this book, because I had learned all of them during the year(i.e. polynomails, quadratic equation). Looking back at this book, I think, however, that it is a good review book, in part because its coverage of topics is so superficial. So, if you've seen the stuff in this book before (algebraic expressions, equations, exponents, roots, logarithms, polynomails, inequalities, permutations, combinations, binomial therom, plane,solid and analytic geometry, parabolas, conics, trigonometry of degrees, radians) then you'll understand them, but if you haven't, go buy another book with better (and more) excercizes, more accurate answers to them, and better explanations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning Supplememtary
I began this book in the fouth grade. I wanted to excel in mathematics and geometry. Answers were somewhat accuarate; when they were not I was utterly perplexed.

The Algebra section was clear; I often needed to re-read sections to understand information expressed.Geometry was almost clear,again I needed to re-read and was sometimes confused. Analytic geometry wasvery puzzling- I needed adult assistace. Trig was very clear, and I nowhave a good grip on trig. Readers for this book should consider buyinganother ^workbook^ as to achieve stronger levels of understanding frompractice. Being determined to understand, this was essential.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of the wrong answers in the book
I am willing to give this book three stars because it provides a good review of high school math.I bought it as a warm up for future studies on Calculus and for preparation for the GRE.

However, there are severalwrong anwers that I have seen in the book.I am grateful to the PrincetonReview for confirming these mistakes by e-mail for me.

For those of youwho decide to get the book, here they are:

1) page 26, #7, x= -10/3 (not10/3)

2) page 28, #5, should be -3x squared -2x +1 over 2x squared-2x

3) page 120, exercise 8.4, #1, should be 64 (not 32)

Part of theproblem here may be the fact that the author, Marcia Lerner, only has aBachelor's degree.The publisher, Princeton Review, should consider hiringpeople with at least Master's degrees in the future."Math SmartII" is marginally acceptable as a learning tool.

I did find that itwas more helpful in studying for the GRE math section than the PrincetonReview's "Cracking the GRE CAT."That's because with that book(and some other GRE books), the idea is to teach you the best strategy foranswering the questions rather than making sure you understand all theconcepts behind the answers.So in that aspect, "Math Smart II"can be of help for GRE test takers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual and effective pedagogical tactics
Traditionally located after functions and before calculus, trigonometry combines elementary proofs with everyday applications. Smith follows this mold, but breaks step in a very positive manner. The conventional wisdom has been to consider the trigonometric functions to be the ratios of the sides of a right triangle first, and then generalize. In this case the general functions are followed by the special cases, and it works.
The functions are defined as coordinates on the unit circle and then it is on to the consequences of the definitions. Several obvious identities are immediately presented with proofs, reinforcing the functional approach to trigonometry, as well as introducing the concept of proof. After graphing and additional proofs of identities, the inverse functions are defined. Only then does right angle trigonometry make an appearance. The book closes with complex numbers, polar curves, and conic sections, with much of it being labeled as optional.
As is the case with books of this type, the majority of the problems are standard issue. However, some of them show a great deal of creativity. For example, if you wish to understand the path of Luke Skywalker's fighter as it attacks the Death Star, turn to page 207. And if you need to know how far Mr. T. must throw his grappling hook to catch the top of the building so that he can climb up and stomp the bad guys, turn to page 208. Such problems add spice to the text that will delight all readers with a touch of youth in their hearts.
All chapters end with a list of chapter objectives, key terms, summary problems, and an application for further study. There is an occasional historical note about certain topics and solutions to all odd problems appear at the back of the book. A calculator is required to do the majority of computational style problems.
There are some areas that are poorly done. The inverse trigonometric functions are poorly presented as the restricted graphs of the functions appear after the definitions. It would have been much clearer if the presentation had been more simultaneous. In the preface a technique called framing is introduced, being described as innovative and unique. Actually, it is nothing that the typical teacher of this material will fail to recognize. The taking of one cycle of the function and repeating it after suitable alterations is a standard way of presenting the periodic nature of trigonometry .
However, these weaknesses are in no way fatal, and this book is an excellent option for anyone looking for a textbook of trigonometry with the right mix of functions, proofs, and applications to everyday situations.
There is additional material for this book:

. An answer book for all problems;
. EXPTEST Question bank for IBM compatible computers;
. Instructor's manual;
. Solutions and study guide;
. Trigpak, a computerized tutorial for IBM compatible computers.

The text is designed specifically to ease the transition to calculus and directly involve graphing calculators. The book features: special material devoted to directly supporting topics in precalculus without covering the actual topics themselves; over 500 display examples that demonstrate and support mathematical developments; and optional graphing calculator sections with exercises, sometimes to verify what has been done by hand, other times to produce graphs of more complicated equations, observations and analysis. ... As a High School Algebra 2 Teacher, this is a wonderful book that covers all the national math standards.It isn't filled with pictures and fluff, making it a no-nonsense book that can be either basic (set A problems) or more challening (set B and C problems).It's examples are straight-forward showing all steps so readers can understand how to get from one step to another.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have book!
I am an adult returning to collage at 59. As you may imagine and higher math training I received has long been forgotten. The fast pace teaching was leaving me without a clue as to what I needed to do in this course. While the text book had answers to the odd questions, with out an explanation of how they were obtained they weren't much use. When I went to school way back then we didn't study algebra, so I wasn't up to speed in the subject as were the younger students just out of high school. This companion to the text book has the odd answers and how they were done, along with explanations. If you are having a hard time you need this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair
The solutions manual is helpful yet can be confusing bcause the manual teaches you the long way which could sometimes prove to be confusing. It is best to understand the formulas first and then use the manual as a cross check to verify that the final solution is correct. ... Read more
