Children aged 5 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Located on the second floor of the Museum, the room is open noon to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and closed on federal holidays. Due to threats against them, the first women graduated under police guard. 14th Amendment is passed by Congress (ratified by the states in 1868), the first time "citizens" and "voters" are defined as "male" in the Constitution. For the first and only time in this century, the U.S. Senate votes on woman suffrage. It loses, 34 to 16. 25 Senators do not bother to participate.

Holidays in the USA: Thanksgiving National Celebrations (Portrait of America) Outline of American History Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November, but many Americans take a day of vacation on the following Friday to make a four-day weekend, during which they may travel long distances to visit family and friends. The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their dissenting religion without interference. After a rough winter, in which about half of them died, they turned for help to neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast. The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition not only because so many other Americans have found prosperity but also because the Pilgrims' sacrifices for their freedom still captivate the imagination.

The Center, holding 35,000 cubic feet of records, was designed around National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) specifications. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) holds Red Cross organizational records, dating from 1881 to recent decades. Groups of archival documents, processed and indexed at the Braugh Center, are given to NARA under a permanent deed of gift.
