Extractions: Endorsements References Endorsements References N ATIVE AMERICAN GEOMETRY is a physical, proportional geometry that originates from the simple circle. A growing body of architectural and iconographic evidence from Native America suggests it was a relatively common tradition that has been practiced for at least two thousand years. This is the same type of geometry that was discovered and developed by the ancestors of many peoples in many places, from China to the Mediterranean Basin to the British Isles. Currently, it resides among the logo designers of Madison Avenue. Generally, it maintains a similar methodological structure to the Middle Eastern tradition of classical geometry that is limited to operations carried out by the compass and straightedge, or two sticks and a rope. In the anthropological world, there are generally two ways traditions come into being in any particular culture: diffusion or borrowing from another culture; and, independent invention or discovery. Did the geometry have a single source and diffuse around the world over a period of several millennia? Or is there something about it, like stone working techniques, that made it independently accessible to the human mind in diverse cultures and civilizations? Personally, I believe the geometry was discovered independently by widely disparate cultures. Why? Because this type of proportional geometry originates with the circle, one of the most popular and multi-cultural symbols in the human world. It is a shape that served as a foundation for countless domestic and ceremonial structures. Given the intimate relationship between the circle's radius and the hexagon, it is an argument I can live with, for now. This opinion does not exclude instances of cultural diffusion within specific geographic regions.

Extractions: The Native American Art Studies Association is a non-profit association whose primary activity is to organize a biennial conference for the purpose of reviewing new research by members in the field of North American Native Art History north of the Rio Grande to the Arctic. The association meets at a different location in North America for each of its conferences. Artists, art historians, museum and gallery curators, anthropologists, archaeologists, and independent scholars all contribute their research and viewpoints in a three day intensive academic conference. NAASA publishes a newsletter to keep members informed during the two year planning process and to announce calls for paper abstracts and other conference items including conference dates and program, membership and conference registration. II. OBJECTIVES: A. Meetings to be held no less frequently than every two years for the purpose of discussing and disseminating knowledge concerning Native American art north of the Rio Grande. Meetings will be held at a different institution each time. Correspondence concerning the meeting will be paid for by the annual dues. In addition, a registration fee, not to exceed $50.00, may be charged for the annual meeting. Costs for food and lodging are at the discretion of the host institution.

Jewelry In the Best of New Mexico issue of the Crosswinds Weekly , the Penfield Gallery of Indian Arts was named one of the Best Reasons for Locals to Spend Time in Old Town , especially for the huge fetish collection. The Penfield Gallery has hundreds of Zuni fetishes carved by the best artists from Zuni Pueblo available in their Albuquerque store. A considerable number of these can be seen on this website, having the most extensive selection of Zuni fetishes available on the Internet. The gallery carries pottery made by the artists of the New Mexico Pueblos, as well as those of Hopi and the Navajo Nation. There is a large collection of miniature pottery, especially from Acoma and Santa Clara, as well as the more traditional forms. The Navajo rugs carried by the gallery are all hand-woven, many of hand-spun wool, and come mainly from the western part of the Navajo Nation. A specialty is sandpainting rugs from the Shiprock area. Navajo sandpaintings are also found here, with large and highly detailed sandpaintings being available. A large selection of Pueblo storytellers is carried, including pottery masks. Navajo folk art, including the work of Delbert Buck and Johnson Antonio, Zuni beaded figures, and the New Mexico cedar santos of Ricardo Salazar may also be found here. Extractions: May 8 - August 11, 2002, Pigott Family Gallery Contact: Anna Koster, Public Relations Manager - 650-725-4657 Uncommon Legacies: Native American Art from the Peabody Essex Museum features rare objects collected by early traders and missionaries to the New World and reflects Native American art after significant contact with European immigrants. The approximately 105 works by artists working during the early to mid-19th century represent four major geographic/cultural areas: the Pacific Northwest, the Southeast, the Great Lakes, and the New England-Canadian Maritime region. Completing the selection will be 13 additional 18th- and early 19th-century objects from important European collections. The exhibition reveals how Native American artists responded to changing cultural conditions during the period from 1799-1850. The collection of the Peabody Essex Museum is the oldest ongoing collection of Native American art in this hemisphere. Totaling some 20,000 historic works from the 17th through the 20th centuries and 50,000 archaeological objects, the collection includes scores of masterworks from throughout North America. The collection was largely inaccessible, even to staff, until the recent completion of a major new storage vault.

Extractions: Contact: Mona Duggan, Associate Director/Director of External Relations, 650-725-4240 Collectors Ruth and Marc Franklin have donated major sculptures from their distinguished collection to the Stanford Museum. The gift includes twenty-three pieces from west and central Africa, one Nootka figure from British Columbia, three Okvik (ancient Eskimo) ivory carvings made about 2,000 years ago and three figures and a mask from Indonesia. "This gift adds many objects of great quality and interest to the Museum's collection," stated Thomas K. Seligman, the John and Jill Freidenrich Director, who is a specialist in African art. "The Franklins have a very close association with Stanford, where Marc has been a professor of Law since 1962 and Ruth is Curator of the Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the Museum. This gift continues their generosity to the University and significantly enriches the Museum's collections." Most of the twenty-three African pieces are masks and figures, among them a massive bellows and an exquisite Ngbaka harp in the form of a standing figure. Many of these are from the Republic of Congo. Other highlights include a polychrome Bwa mask from Burkina Faso more than four feet wide representing a hawk, an ancient terracotta head from northern Nigeria, a four-faced mask from the Fang people of Gabon, a very large and important standing female figure from the Mitsogho people of Gabon, and two culturally significant Luba pieces, also from the Republic of Congo.
