The alkali sinks and great arid stretches clothed with sagebrush and creosote bush typify Nevada's landscape. Its mountain chains generally run north and south, further segmenting the state. On the California border stand the lofty Sierra Nevada [snowy range]. The driest state in the nation, the days and nights are generally clear, and the temperature varies with the altitude as well as with the seasons. The mean elevation is c.5,500 ft (1,676 m). In the north and west the winters reach extreme cold, while in parts of the south the summers approach ovenlike heat. Carson City is the capital; Las Vegas is the largest city, and Reno the second largest. Besides the bustling activity of Reno and Las Vegas, there are many other places of interest to the Nevada visitor. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. Lake Mead Recreational Area has facilities for fishing, swimming, and boating. Other attractions include Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada-California line, Lehman Caves National Monument, Death Valley National Monument, Great Basin National Park, and restored mining ghost towns like Virginia City.

Running more than 50 miles southwest-to-northeast and more than 150 miles northwest-to-southeast, it is the largest national park in the contiguous U.S. Ecologically, its plants and animals of are representative of the Mojave Desert; geologists consider it to be located in the southeastern Great Basin Desert. Death Valley itself is a large desert trough nearly surrounded by mountains. It is nestled between the Amargosa Range on the east which includes the Black, the Funeral and the Grapevine Mountains and the Panamint Range on the west which includes the Cottonwood Mountains. The Owlshead Mountains rise at the south end of the park and the Sylvania Mountains border the northern end. It contains the lowest point in the western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level near Badwater as well as numerous high-rising mountain peaks, including Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet. The centerpiece of the recreation area is Lake Mead, impounded behind Hoover Dam near Boulder City in southern Nevada. Three of America's four desert ecosystems the Mojave, the Great Basin and the Sonoran Deserts meet in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. As a result, this seemingly barren environment contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. Access off Interstate 15 in Nevada; U.S. Highways 93 and 95 in Nevada and Arizona. By air: to Las Vegas (25 miles from Lake Mead NRA); to Bullhead City, AZ (10 miles from Lake Mead NRA on Lake Mohave). Climate Weather in the Mojave Desert can be extreme at times. Storms and resulting flash floods are possible year-round. Avoid camping in washes and hiking in canyons during bad weather. The entire state lies in the rain-shadow desert formed by the mountain range and receives very little rainfall. The climate is extremely hot and dry. Most of the state only receives an average of four inches (10 cm) of rainfall per year, with more than 250 days of sunshine. Summers are quite hot with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 degrees F (40 C). In the winter months, daytime temperatures are usually a quite comfortable 60 - 70 deg. Most of the terrain is mountainous, limiting development mainly to relatively flat lying areas along tributary streams. During the last half-century, increased human activity in the lake basin has caused the lake's clarity to decrease at a rate of about 1 foot per year (30 cm/yr). Major recreational activities within the basin include casino gaming in Nevada, alpine and cross-country skiing, golfing, water sports, hiking, fishing, camping, and bicycling. Recognizing the threat to Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) , the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) , and the Tahoe Research Group of the University of California, Davis (TRG) are working to keep Lake Tahoe beautiful. They are monitoring sediment and important nutrients flowing into the lake from the streams and ground-water aquifers in the basin. Lake Tahoe is located along the border of California and Nevada. About one-third of the basin is in Nevada and two-thirds is in California. The basin is bounded by the Sierra Nevada to the west and the Carson Range to the east. The Lake Tahoe Basin was formed by geologic block (normal) faulting about 2 to 3 million years ago. The down-dropping of the Lake Tahoe Basin and the uplifting of the adjacent mountains resulted in dramatic topographic relief in the region. Mountain peaks rise to more than 10,000 ft (3,048 m) above sea level. The surface of Lake Tahoe has an average elevation of about 6,225 ft (1,897 m).

Extractions: T he first annual "Geography of the West Field Camp" focused on the Basin and Range physiographic province of western North America. The field camp was led by Geography professor Karl Lillquist and Resource Management graduate student Damon Roberts. The participants included six CWU students and six students from other universities in North America and Hawaii. The objectives of the course were enhance student knowledge of field research methodologies and understanding of the physical, human, and resource geography of the arid West via field tripping and detailed research in a Nevada basin and range. O nce in central Nevada, we set up a tent-based camp in central Grass Valley where students were introduced to field research and began to work on a variety of research topics. These topics included riparian vegetation, vegetation and soil zonation, geomorphology, wildlife, fire history, land use history, and public vs. private lands issues. In our spare time, we soaked in a nearby hot springs and explored old mining ruins.
