Unfortunately, the Oceania South Pacific Junior Weight-lifting Championship planned to be held in Kiribati on December 7th 8th, 2001 had to be postponed due to the abrupt grounding of air service in Nauru. As a result, Mr. Paul Coffa, Secretary General to Oceania Weight Lifting Federation Congress flew to Fiji from Australia, especially to receive Niues bid presented by Hon Jackson. The only other official bid was that of Samoa who decided in the last minute to cancel theirs in full support of Niues bid.Mr. Vivian said, that this will not only be a historical event for Niue but it will also bring a number of benefits particularly in the tourist industry.

Flight time to Tonga is 50 minutes and flight time direct to Auckland is 3 hours. Niue is a self-governing country in free association with New Zealand. Self government was achieved in 1974 and under it's Constitution, Niueans remain British subjects and NZ citizens. The resident population of Niue currently stands at 2000 people. This is due to out migration to New Zealand where an estimated population is 18,000.00. Niueans are Polynesians, with ancestral ties to Samoa and Tonga. There are no chiefs or tribal system and the rank of importance in the community is not heriditary but earned. All adults has a voice in Land matters so long as the family genealogy is evident. Each village is governed by a local body the Village Council and there is an equal opportunity amongst the gender to speak in matters affecting the village. The constitution provides for a Legislative Assembly of 20 members and a Cabinet of 4 members. The Premier is elected by the assembly and three ministers that make up the executive is chosen by the Premier.

Extractions: New Zealand Electronic Text Centre Niuean The major impact on the Niuean language has been English, originally as a result of the work of missionaries and (initially) use of English as the language of education. This influence is so strong that indigenous Niueans are close to being naturally bilingual. More recently, large scale immigration to New Zealand has lead to an increasing proportion of New Zealand-born Niueans for whom Niuean is not a first language, nor a language which will provide employment. LMS missionaries were active in Niue between 1846 and 1890, and were responsible for formalising the alphabet and producing a complete Bible ( Ko e Tohi Tapu ) and hymnbook ( Ko e Tau Lologo Tapu ) in Niuean, both of which are still in print. Following the missionary period, Niuean religion became Congregationalist (to 1969) and then either mostly Presbyterian (in New Zealand) or Ekalesia Niue (in Niue). Although church services (in English first, under the LMS) are now conducted in Niuean, there is no printed prayerbook or other religious publications (e.g. readers for children) apart from occasional items produced about ten years ago by the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand. Several notes on vocabulary and grammar were published in the Journal of the Polynesian Society between 1893 and 1907, but the first substantial dictionary (with a few pages of supporting grammar) was J.M. McEwen's
