Extractions: Objective Students will count and compare amounts of money less than or equal to one dollar. Overview of the Lesson Through a collection of hands-on activities, students gain experience in counting, exchanging, and comparing money. Students begin the lesson by finding all of the possible combinations of coins that can be used to equal a specified amount of money. They then compare two amounts of money and use number sense skills and problem solving strategies to move coins from one group to another so that both groups are equal in value. Students play the Money Exchange Game as they roll a die with money amounts and try to be the first person to obtain exactly $1.00. Students must make monetary exchanges in the game such as trading ten pennies for a dime. The students are then immersed in an economics activity as they shop in the teacher made puppet supply store where they are given one dollar to buy items to make a paper bag puppet. Materials Teacher: Money Chart Divide a 9 x 16 piece of tag board into 4 columns. Label the columns: Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters. You may use a picture of the coins rather than words. If you wish to use the chart for other activities, you may make cards with labels that students could place at the top of the columns.
Extractions: Extensions and Connections Choose a mystery "alien" fraction. Give clues one at a time until students have guessed the identity of the mystery alien. For example, one clue could be, "I am greater than 1/8." The next clue could be that the alien fraction is smaller than 1/2. The third clue could be that the total number of pieces is eight. Students should conclude that the alien fraction is 3/8. Have students locate books about quilts and read them. Give the students a template for a quilt with rows of squares. Students color the quilt in a pattern of their choosing and give the fractional part of the quilt that each color represents. Have students design a garden for the school. Divide the garden into equal parts using string and sticks. Students can make a map of the garden on paper. Have students research the type of plants that would grow best in their garden and draw these plants on the map. Students should then tell the fractional part of the garden that each type of plant will cover.

Extend discussion to compare what the students know about mosquitoes and the information about mosquitoes in the story. Introduce the students to the different life stages of the mosquitoes using the cards. Discuss how the larvae and pupae live in the water, while adults fly and tell about the three stages in a mosquito's life. With the aquatic container, have students look for the larvae, pupae, and adults. Talk about what each stage eats (larvae eat things in the water we can't see (bacteria), pupae don't eat, both male and female adults eat sweet juices in flowers (nectar) and females eat blood). As a class, count the number of adult mosquitoes in the container. Place one picture of the adult mosquito for each one counted (from Mosquito Cards Activity Sheet ) on a chart with days of the week. Continue counting the number of the adults each day and add to the chart.
