Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A086913. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research expanded Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) communications analysis in two areas. First, multimode communication was included to account for ground to ground and air to ground links in addition to the standard air to air links traditionally used in LPI analysis. The propagation equations for the three modes of interest were derived and included in LPI analytic models in the form of a mode quality factor to account for multimode LPI scenarios. This new quality factor was used in studying several communication and interception link combinations. Variations due to differences between the communication and interception modes were presented graphically. Second, atmospheric conditions were included to account for atmospheric attenuation. Previously, both links were assumed to be under the same atmospheric conditions. This assumption limits LPI analysis to scenarios where the receiver and interceptor are located close to each other. Therefore, the atmospheric quality factor had to be expanded to include scenarios where the communication link and the interception link are experiencing different and possibly fluctuating atmospheric conditions. The atmospheric propagation losses were accounted for by using the Liebe atmospheric propagation model to estimate atmospheric attenuation in dB/km for any practical atmospheric conditions. The atmospheric quality factor was then applied to the analysis of various scenarios for communication and interception links under similar and different atmospheric conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nanotech is Here and Advancing, this Book spells it out!
I have been studying nanotechnology for over 10 years now, and not only is it here, but, it is advancing very rapidly. This is an excellent book that covers the entire spectrum of molecular technologies, from diamonoid structural materials and assembler machines, to biotechnologies and Brownian Motion Motors. I seriously suggest anyone into nanotechnology purchase this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Introduction to Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is an exciting field with amazing potential across many industries. It is only natural that nanotechnology investment analyses will soon be ubiquitous, as we witness a meteoric rise in the use of the technology.Mr. Fishbine is the first to take a stab at future earning potential of nanotechnology, introducing the reader to his vision.
The book does an excellent job of defining nanotechnology and discussing the potential benefits and challenges of nanotechnology to the reader, especially if you have had little or no experience in the field. In addition, Mr. Fishbine creates a logical and creative model upon which one can easily measure investment potential, while addressing investors' risk preferences.(e.g., stay away if you're risk averse!)
As a scientist and investor, Mr. Fishbine shines, as his deep understanding of the technology is proven while analyzing nanotechnology's interesting potentials and case studies. At times the book reads a bit awkward, however, and it could use some "touching up" from a more experienced writer.
All in all, it's a strong accomplishment that is a courageous attempt to define the nanotechnology investment landscape.Since the technology is quickly evolving, along with the economic and investment environment, I will look forward to an insightful sequel!

5-0 out of 5 stars A credible and insightful work
I normally never write reviews, but I was amused at the comments of a recent reviewer.Since I routinely recommend this book to my clients, I thought it best to add my thoughts.

First, nanotechnology is an emerging field. There are many more companies claiming to be in the nanotechnology space than are really present. The periodical Forbes/Wolf nanotech report consistently reminds investors to check companies to see how much of their nanotechnology is real, vs. how much is in the name/hyperbole surrounding a company.

Second, most of the nanotechnology emerging today, from an investor's point of view comes from government sources, which need to be nurtured into the commercial/investment market place. The In Realsis study confirms the author's approach to developing investment strategies based on the realities of current investment. It's not as simple as picking stocks. It requires good knowledge of the technology and quality due diligence to make an investment.

Finally, I think the recent review from the August 2002 issue of Physics World summarizes best, this author's work..."the author has done a good and entertaining job of breaking down, ordering and assessing a fair chunk of the technologies currently being developed, and providing a valuable insight into their commercial potential. If anything, this is the main strength of the book as it provides potential investors with a starting point for understanding and locating opportunities."

All in all, bravo on producing the finest guide to nanotechnology investment that one can buy for [this money].

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author goes off on ridiculous sidetracks about private , academic and government related investment possibilities - all the while completely ignoring the several dozen publicly traded companies that are working on the cutting edge of nanotechnology. Indeed , several public companies dedicated specifically to nanotech are mentioned only once - in a stock chart. No profile or business models are even hinted at. Just a ticker symbol and price. Of no use to the average investor whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars a valuable investment guide
I found this book to be clearly written, well organized, and very informative.Mr. Fishbine thoroughly explains complex technological issues in down-to-earth, and at times, humorous terminology that anyone can easily relate to.I would recommend this book as a valuable guide to anyone who is seriously thinking about investing in nanotechnology. ... Product Description
It was once widely believed that quantum computation would never become a reality. However, the discovery of quantum error correction and the proof of the accuracy threshold theorem nearly ten years ago gave rise to extensive development and research aimed at creating a working, scalable quantum computer. Over a decade has passed since this monumental accomplishment yet no book-length pedagogical presentation of this important theory exists.

Quantum Error Correction and Fault Tolerant Quantum Computing offers the first full-length exposition on the realization of a theory once thought impossible. It provides in-depth coverage on the most important class of codes discovered to date—quantum stabilizer codes. It brings together the central themes of quantum error correction and fault-tolerant procedures to prove the accuracy threshold theorem for a particular noise error model. The author also includes a derivation of well-known bounds on the parameters of quantum error correcting code.

Packed with over 40 real-world problems, 35 field exercises, and 17 worked-out examples, this book is the essential resource for any researcher interested in entering the quantum field as well as for those who want to understand how the unexpected realization of quantum computing is possible. ... Product Description

Ambient intelligence is the vision of a technology that will become invisibly embedded in our natural surroundings, present whenever we need it, enabled by simple and effortless interactions, attuned to all our senses, adaptive to users and context-sensitive, and autonomous. High-quality information access and personalized content must be available to everybody, anywhere, and at any time. This book addresses ambient intelligence used to support human contacts and accompany an individual's path through the complicated modern world. From the technical standpoint, distributed electronic intelligence is addressed as hardware vanishing into the background. Devices used for ambient intelligence are small, low-power, low weight and (very importantly) low-cost; they collaborate or interact with each other; and they are redundant and error-tolerant. This means that the failure of one device will not cause failure of the whole system. Since wired connections often do not exist, radio methods will play an important role for data transfer. This book addresses various aspects of ambient intelligence, from applications that wait around the corner using essentially existing technologies to ambitious ideas whose realization is still far away due to major unsolved technical challenges.

Product Description
The importance of contact and surface effects in modern engineering and their combined effects led the organisers to reconvene this 9th International Conference, which covers two related topics: Computational Methods and Experiments in Contact Mechanics and Surface Effects. Nowadays the importance of contact and surface problems in many technological fields is well understood. They are complex and inherently non-linear due to the moving boundary and the different properties of materials, particularly along the contact surfaces. Structural components fail by wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue etc, that is to say they are affected by surface conditions. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements for surfaces undergoing contact, a problem that is specifically addressed by the Conference. This book contains papers from the Ninth International Conference on Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics: Computational Methods and Experiments, and discusses the following topics: Surface treatments; Thick coatings; Thin coatings; Surface problems in contact mechanics; Indentation and hardness; Fatigue; Numerical analysis; Applications and case studies. ... These tiny structures could offer architectural designs for the cities of the future. The authors explore the foam-like carbon structures, which relate to ‘schwarzites’ and which are infinite periodic minimal surfaces of negative curvature. They show that the periodicity of close repeat units of such structures is evident not only in these formations but also in all of the carbon allotropes. The text provides literature and data on the field of nanostructure periodicity and the authors’ own results on nanostructure building and energy calculations.

Product Description
One of the first books to thoroughly examine the subject, Quantum Computing Devices: Principles, Designs, and Analysis covers the essential components in the design of a "real" quantum computer. It explores contemporary and important aspects of quantum computation, particularly focusing on the role of quantum electronic devices as quantum gates.

Largely self-contained and written in a tutorial style, this reference presents the analysis, design, and modeling of the major types of quantum computing devices: ion traps, cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), linear optics, quantum dots, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID), and neutral atom traps. It begins by explaining the fundamentals and algorithms of quantum computing, followed by the operations and formalisms of quantum systems. For each electronic device, the subsequent chapters discuss physical properties, the setup of qubits, control actions that produce the quantum gates that are universal for quantum computing, relevant measurements, and decoherence properties of the systems. The book also includes tables, diagrams, and figures that illustrate various data, uses, and designs of quantum computing.

As nanoelectronics will inevitably replace microelectronics, the development of quantum information science and quantum computing technology is imperative to the future of information science and technology. Quantum Computing Devices: Principles, Designs, and Analysis helps fulfill this need by providing a comprehensive collection of the most promising devices for the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Today's State of the Art
Still in only the most advanced laboratories the future of computing seems to lie in new technologies that will replace the current type of semi-conductors. These technologies, lumped together under the term Quantum Devices. For the first time, the leading reserchers from around the world have gotten together to produce a book containing all of the promising areas that are being worked on, summarizing the work up to date, and giving some indication of the direction of future research.

Up until now the ever increasing speed of computers has been following Moore's law which states that the computing power of a CPU will double every 1.5 years at half the price. But in about nine more doublings there is a brick wall, the devices built into the chip will be one atom wide and you can't get any smaller than that with semi-conductors.

The basic concepts of quantum computing go back to the 80's. But the actual construction of devices that could perform the basic tasks such as quantum logic gates has proven more difficult, There are several schemes that have shown promise, but each has stumbled over roadblocks and difficulties. In turn each has provided spin offs into both computing and other areas as well.

Here in one book is the story of the state of the art. ... Read more
