Product Description
The study provides an analysis of the economic, physical and social impacts of tourism on the town of Pokhara, Nepal, as perceived by the host population. The local perceptions are gathered through a resident survey and a series of personal interviews. A context for the assessment is provided by a profile of Pokhara and of the tourists who visit the area. Consideration is given to the lessons provided by the case study for other tourism impact research and for the development of appropriate tourism policies in the local area and elsewhere in the Third World. Tourism in Pokhara is based around trekking, and the case study illustrates the industry as having a wide range of direct and indirect impacts on the local area. The economic performance of the industry is seen as modest to data with benefits mainly being restricted to those directly involved in tourism activity. The industry appears to be having a mixed impact on the environment, both encouraging degradation to occur and acting as a force to achieve remedial action. It is also seen as being only partly responsible for social and cultural changes which are occurring in the area. The main conclusion from the case study is that the tourism industryrequires an element of planning and control to limit the overall supply and location of accommodation, in order to protect the attractiveness of Pokhara as a destination and to secure the profitability of the industry. ... Often overshadowed on the world stage by issues surrounding India and Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are nonetheless vital players in this theater of Asia. Nepal and Bangladesh brings a refreshing level of clarity to a wide variety of topics surrounding both nations including history, current affairs, business and economics, culture, literature, political science, and travel.

Written in a voice that speaks to general audiences from secondary instructors to interested business people and travelers to the region, this handbook paints a portrait of both countries that is at once complete and accessible. Product Description
"The remarkable achievement of this book is that it highlights the interface of socially relevant information focussing on the natural environment of the Tharus from the perspective of their indigenous knowledge. It provides the reader with insights which can only be obtained through an inter-disciplinary approach." Internationales Asienforum "For anyone interested in Southern Nepal and Chitawan, and its National Park and people, this book is exceptional. [a] this text provides a fascinating and thorough insight into the life of the Tharus people in Southern Nepal through the eyes of an experienced, competent and respectful researcher. I highly recommend it." The Geographical Journal . (Franz Steiner 2000) ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Economists studying environmental collective action and green governance have paid little attention to the question of gender. Research on gender and green governance in other disciplines has focused mainly on women's near absence from forestry institutions. This interdisciplinary book turns that focus on its head to ask: what if women were present in these institutions? What difference would that make?

Would women's inclusion in forest governance - undeniably important for equity - also affect decisions on forest use and outcomes for conservation and subsistence? Are women's interests in forests different from men's? Would women's presence lead to better forests and more equitable access? Does it matter which class of women governs? And how large a presence of women would make an impact? Answers to these questions can prove foundational for effective environmental governance, yet they have been subject to little empirical investigation.

In an analysis that is conceptually sophisticated and statistically rigorous, using primary data on community forestry institutions in India and Nepal, this book is the first major study to comprehensively address these wide-ranging issues. It traces women's history of exclusion from public institutions, the factors which constrain their effective participation, and how those constraints can be overcome. It outlines how strategic partnerships between forestry groups and other civil society institutions could strengthen rural women's bargaining power with community and government. And it examines the complexities of eliciting government accountability in addressing poor rural women's needs, such as for clean domestic fuel and access to the commons.

Located in the interface of environmental studies, political economy and gender analysis, the volume makes significant original contributions to current debates on gender and governance, forest conservation, clean energy policy, critical mass and social inclusion. Traversing uncharted territory with rare analytical rigor, this lucidly written book will be of interest to scholars and students as well as policy makers and practitioners. ... Read more
