A one-sided view of legal prostitution
An interesting assimilation of negative material about legal and illegal prostitution, inside and outside of Nevada. A condemnation of prostitution, legal or not. She seems unable to seriously consider any positive aspect of a woman's being a legal prostitute, unlike "Brothel" by Alexa Albert.

Powerful Book
I am a local anti-street prostitution activist in my area. I try to read everything I can on the effects of prostitution on society. I found this book to contain alot of great information that dispelled many popular prostitution myths. This book confirmed my belief that prostitution is not the world's oldest profession - but instead is the world's oldest abuse of women.

pro woman research
Farley has given us a fine new tool with which to understand and reveal prostitution.In my anti-violence work in Canada, I am always on the look out for fresh research that connects one form of male violence against women with another and that looks at our local situation with some sense of the importance of activist research and some global perspective.I have bought four copies of this book so far to make sure young activists get access to it. They are immediately won to it by the cover art and find the writing easy to engage.Then they settle in to the important information available to them in this pro woman work.

A grateful ex-prostituted woman
I have been out of the horrific sex industry for 8 years now, and I am so very grateful to Melissa for writing this very true look at what happens when a woman's body is reduced to something that can be rented for men's sexual gratification.
It is a painful read at times yet very true. Most people are horrified at the thought of women trapped in sexual slavery in other countries but when it comes to looking at what is happening in North America most people appease their guilt by using the word "choice" and then do nothing to change the systems that entraps women.

The Cover Says It All
The cover of Ms. Farley's book says it all. Friends who saw me reading it asked if I was reading a book on the prison system or about Guantanamo Bay. When I explained that it was in fact, a book about the legal brothels in Nevada I was met with disbelieving eyes. Why would legal brothels need barbed wire around their premises? Certainly not to keep out the Johns.
Ms. Farley's book is compelling and hard hitting, exposing the "legal" prostitution industry for its corruption, its connection with trafficking in women and girls and its human rights violations against them. The picture she shows us, starting with the cover, exposes the dark side of this so called, "glamorous" business, for what it is, male power and privilege out of control.

The "Red scare" of the 1950s created a national crisis that challenged concepts of loyalty and freedom of speech in every corner of American society. The crisis was especially problematic in American universities, where traditions of academic freedom found themselves at odds with political issues stemming from the cold war. The University of Nevada in Reno was no exception.

The university before and during World War II was a small (fewer than 2,000 students) school offering basic programs to a largely Nevada-based student body in the nation’s least-populated state. The campus was quiet, secure, traditional, and generally conservative. The postwar years brought booming enrollments and new faculty members, many from outside Nevada, imbued with a sense of the importance of research and of shared academic governance. Soon, the university found itself embroiled in an intense controversy that threatened its academic integrity and even raised concerns about its future as a viable institution.

The 1952 appointment of Minard W. Stout as president triggered the crisis. Mandated by a conservative Board of Regents to "clean up" the university, Stout brought to his new job a keen sense of mission and a strident commitment to an authoritarian, top-down chain of command. His subsequent battles with faculty and students over their role in university governance and over the very nature of higher education soon degenerated into angry accusations of faculty Communist sympathies and bitter confrontations over academic free speech, academic freedom, and loyalty. The storm brought the university national notoriety and made the administration of higher education a major issue within Nevada, ultimately involving the state legislature and the courts in an effort to resolve the conflict.

The History of the CCSD
"Education in the Neon Shadow: The First 50 Years of the Clark County School District" is a history of what is currently the nation's fifth largest school district. Clark County occupies the southern triangle of Nevada, a geographically large area that borders Arizona, Utah and California. 'The Early History' section explores the initial settlements and their schools. Beginning with the Mormon colonies of the Colorado River, the book also examines the desert communities of Indian Springs, Blue Diamond and Searchlight. In addition to the mining and religious settlements, "Education in the Neon Shadow" naturally leads into the earliest days of the industrial towns of Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas and of course Las Vegas. This initial chapter will be of special interest to readers with an affection for Western history. In 1955, the scattered schools consolidated into the Clark County School District (CCSD). 'Striving for Equality 1965-1974' offers an interesting case study of how public schools strived to become racially integrated. For the CCSD, sixth grade centers were key. This time period also saw the introduction of school lunches and special education. 'Budget Struggles 1975-1984' examines a recurring theme with the CCSD. While desiring good schools, Southern Nevadans have a history of being reluctant to fund a quality education system. The 1980s brought a time of explosive growth. The PEPCON explosion and MGM Grand fire inspired safer schools. The history finishes with the challenges related to the federally mandated 'No Child Left Behind.' The book is threaded with the implementation of various programs, school openings and the accomplishments of superintendents. The authors carefully anchor each time period of the CCSD with local, national and global events. There are times when "Education in the Neon Shadow" seems like an annotated listing of government programs, but more often than not, it offers a humanizing overview of educators doing the best with what they have been given. Noticeably absent is the role that organized labor played in improving the CCSD. Stephens Press delivered a very attractive layout. Thanks to the efforts of the Archive Committee, the publication is lusciously illustrated with historical photographs. The black and white photos of the early days are especially precious. The contributing authors crafted a book that is as well-written as it is accessible. No history degree is required; this publication can be appreciated by the lay reader. "Education in the Neon Shadow" is long overdue. This book's predecessor (Harvey Dondero's "History of Clark County Schools") only spanned up to 1986 and it has long been out-of-print. Indeed, few could have predicted that a turn of the century railroad stop would eventually grow to the current metropolis that hosts some 300,000 students.
