Product Description
The meteoric rise of Las Vegas from Mormon outpost to international entertainment center. Since Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905, when the Union Pacific auctioned off land around its new railroad shops, the city has grown from a ramshackle village to a sprawling metropolitan area of well over a million people.

Las Vegas: A Centennial History offers a detailed and deeply knowledgeable account of the growth of this unique city, the impact of politics and of wars, and the city’s struggle to establish diversified economy. The authors’ scope extends chronologically from the first Paiute people who settled around the artesian springs that gave the city its name, right up to the construction of the latest megaresort, and geographically far beyond the original township to include the several municipalities that make up the metropolitan Las Vegas area.

Las Vegas: A Centennial History celebrates the city’s unparalleled growth in the brief century of its existence. It also offers fresh insight into the process of city building in the American West, where urban needs and aspirations must contend with water scarcity, isolation, erratic economies, highly diverse populations, and the rocky relationship between the need for civic order and the Western spirit of independence. Its story will engage residents and visitors alike, as well as all readers interested in the history and workings of an American city. ... Read more

Product Description
John Hay has been acclaimed as one of the most significant contemporary nature writers and environmentalists. In Mind the Gap, an autobiographic memoir and a passionate commentary on our place in the natural world, he retraces the paths that led to his career and explores the literary and environmental influences that shaped his interest in nature.

Born into a respected old New York family, Hay grew up in upper-class Manhattan and rural New Hampshire, between the rigid proprieties of society and the delicious freedoms he discovered during his outdoor adventures. Travel, education, and his own sensitivity and curiosity helped to open the world to him. Shortly after World War II, he moved to a desolate, sandy lot on Cape Cod. Much of the book deals with his life in a small rural community on the Cape, addressing such subjects as the annual herring spawn, resident and migratory birds, local wildlife, his human neighbors, and the complex rhythms of life in this region of plunging winds and vast seas. Hay’s vivid, closely observed descriptions of his surroundings support his insightful comments on nature and our intricate relationship to it. He warns us that "in setting ourselves apart from the rest of living creatures, we fall victim to our own ice-bound conceit. It is only in sharing that we know anything at all." Hay shares his knowledge generously, and as readers we are thereby vastly enriched. ... Read more

College guides written by students for students.

UNLV Students Tell It Like It Is

When you mention Vegas to most, they think of glitz, glamour, and drive-thru weddings. They think of casinos and mega-resorts, strippers and dance clubs. Las Vegas is the party central that college kids are supposed to visit during spring break.

Though the 24-hour city is alive with the hum of coins clanking in slot machines and is brightened by its legendary neon lights, the Entertainment Capital of the World has nearly two million residents. Outsiders don t realize that people really live in the city of sin and that many of these residents don t set foot onto a casino floor. On the same note, most people don t realize there s a university here.
- Marek Biernacinski and Melissa Rothermel, authors

Besides being located in Sin City, did you know that Jimmy Kimmel, Larry Johnson, and Anthony E. Zuiker, creator and executive producer of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: Miami, and CSI: New York all attended UNLV?

Find out what current UNLV students think of:

Nightlife:
The nightlife is incredible, though some clubs are snobby. If you re not rich and beautiful, stay away from Foundation Room. Body English is a popular club, but it can get so crowded that it s claustrophobic. You can clubhop if you get bored. Local women are frequently free, which is nice.

There are a lot of different bars, which kind of sucks because everyone is spread out. There is no hotspot to be at.

Overall Experience:
I like my school, but to get the full effect, you must join a group of some kind Greek, school-sponsored, something. Just get involved, and friends, parties, and people will come your way!

UNLV isn t how I imagined college. Most people come to attend classes and then leave. It doesn t seem like there is much involvement nor any interaction. I would love to be somewhere where there was more college life.

UNLV students realize that it's not the quintessential college town, but despite its shortcomings, many students say they wouldn't want it any other way.

To find out if UNLV is right for you, check out the College Prowler guidebook for the best and worst dorms, how tasty the campus food is, and what most students spend their free time doing.

Find out if UNLV truly has something for you, straight from the students mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

Read our UNLV guide and discover what it feels like to be on campus for four years.

Discover if UNLV is Right For You. ... Read more

Product Description
This deceptively small map of Las Vegas puts most guidebooks to shame.Pocket Pilots city map/guides are shirt-pocket sized, easy-to-fold, laminated, easy to read, and packed to bursting with useful information, including how to use/navigate the public transit system, a brief and pithy guide to the citys most popular points of interest, a neighborhood-by-neighborhood description of the city, listings of parks, cultural events, and hot spots, notes on local cuisine, and useful phrases - and, above all, a street map featuring magnifications of prime areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cannot rate this highly enough!
This is perhaps THE pocket travel map for Las Vegas, and I suspect the other guides in this line are just as excellent. Keep in mind that this guide is very pocket, measuring just under 4 by 3 inches square.

PROS:
-Small, without being too small. It really does fit in a pocket, yet it unfolds to a reasonable size to cover the entire area from the strip to downtown to way out past the airport.
-Durable. The lamination is great, and even after a week of frequent use and being jammed into purses and pockets and pulled out in moving buses, it still looked brand new.
-Detailed. The map itself is great quality, with all the casino names and major points of interest having clear labels on the map itself. The back is crammed full with footnotes pointing out everything from where to eat, to what to expect at the Atomic Testing Museum.
-Cheap. You can grab a copy for just a couple bucks, as of writing.

CONS:
-Keeping in mind the form factor, there are no major cons.

This isn't really an all-around travel book intended to help you plan a whole vacation, but it is perfect as a quick-reference street map and guide. Can't remember where a specific casino destination is? Pop this little guy open, and you're to your information in seconds. Can't figure out where to go tonight? Do a quick scan for nearby points of interest. It's vastly more convenient than packing a full-sized roadmap without losing the important detail, and much less cumbersome than any full travel guide if you need a quick idea of where you are on a late-night trip up the strip. And with the great lamination, you can always jot down some notes with a dry-erase marker anytime you feel the need. What more could you possibly ask for in a little guide like this?

If one of these Pocket-Pilot guides is available for wherever you're taking your next vacation, get it immediately. I can't recommend it highly enough, and I do recommend it to all my friends. I managed to miss my stop downtown late one night taking the bus, but I had nothing to fear as I knew I had this little guide handy, when I'm normally never the type to carry a cumbersome map or guide book with me. Hey, even if you have a GPS, you can't deny the comfort of a hard copy that isn't limited by coverage. I could sit back, relax, and know exactly where I was headed and how long it was taking to get there. This guide paid for itself a hundred times over right then. ... Read more
