Product Description
From the time it was sighted by Spanish explorers in the eighteenth century through the creation of the John Muir trail, the building of the Hetch Hetchy Dam, and the founding of the Sierra Club, the great snowy range of California has provided fulfillment to generations of trappers, immigrants, engineers, naturalists, and tourists. Now a mountaineering classic, this pioneering book was the first to synthesize into a single, riveting narrative all of the varied aspects of human endeavor related to the history of the Sierra Nevada. Thoroughly illustrated with photographs, drawings, and maps, the book continues to be indispensable for any lover of the high country. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
For hikers and climbers, History of the Sierra Nevada is the Bible.Frances Farquhar was an excellent mountaineer, president of the Sierra Club and, fortunately for us, an excellent writer.Combine this read with "Up and Down California in 1860-1864" by Brewer, and "Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada" by King, and you have an excellent overview of the history of the high country.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Primer
My love for the Sierra Nevada mountains goes back to the days of my youth when we made family trips to Yosemite and Sequoia. Later as a teenager filled with wanderlust, I returned to explore them on my own terms. Despite having made many trips to the Sierras, I never really read much about them until recently when I read several books covering the subject by early explorers of the area like William Brewer and Clarence King. Readers of those books are referred to Farquhar's History of the Sierra Nevada by amazon and others, so I bought this and found it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
If you want a broad overview of the history of the Sierras, particularly the High Sierras, then this is the book I would recommend. Farquhar's history is a very useful primer that touches on all important aspects of exploration of the High Sierra and the progress made from mere exploitation to preservation and recreation. Note that the focus is on the high country as the history of the foothills has been much more extensively surveyed.
The book covers the period from the first tentative Spanish penetrations, to the arrival of trappers and hunters from the east, then on to the settlers and further to the establishment of the National Forests and Parks in the region. Farquhar covers Jedediah Smith, John Fremont, Brewer, King, John Muir, and others who contributed so much to the exploration of the Sierras, the discovery of the important passes, the climbing of the peaks, and the naming of the natural features. He also writes of the subsequent struggle between those who wanted to exploit the mountains for all they were worth and those who felt that posterity had a stake in their partial preservation. Additionally, he discusses the politics of the exploitation/preservation debate and the many political battles in both Sacramento and Washington DC that have made the High Sierra the place we know today. The once dominant mining and logging industries are of small importance compared to the great importance placed on the waters and watershed of the Sierras by most Californians today.
Most thrilling to me are the descriptions of the backcountry and the tales of finding paths through previously uncharted territory. Francis Farquhar's history is well written, extensively footnoted, and relatively fast-paced. His enthusiasm for his subject is evident throughout. Since this is an overview, he doesn't bog you down in the minutiae of the events about which he writes. If you are a lover of the Sierras, but have a hazy knowledge of their history, then I highly recommend reading History of the Sierra Nevada.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great historical look at the High Sierra's
As the author says in the preface, this book "deals with human experiences in the Sierra Nevada from the time the Spaniards first saw it in the latter part of the eighteenth century to the present, when its economic and recreational uses serve several million people." Chapters are numerous, concise, and specific to event or persons, and include sections on the early Indians, Jedediah Smith, Joseph Walker, Fremont, Yosemite, the giant Sequoias, the coming of the railroad, important surveys, John Muir, and Mount Whitney, to name just a handful of the subjects dealt with. Arranged chronologically, the book is an excellent history of the region. Farquhar has consulted and presented information from original sources, and although chapters are relatively short, they are packed with interesting and important details. The book is also well illustrated and contains some excellent maps. It's a handsome overview of the history of the Sierra Nevadas and is a good starting place for anyone interested in the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting history of the Sierra Nevada of California
This book was written by a mountaineer and editor who knew the Sierras well first hand and even knew some of the people involved in the discovery and preservation of the High Sierra of California. He takes us from the initial European discovery and naming by the Spanish, to the gold miners, early visitors to Yosemite, and Sierra Club and mountaineering explorations around the turn of the 19th century. Highly recommended for those interested in California history and the outdoors. ... Read more

Product Description
There's more to Nevada than one-armed bandits, cheap buffets, and Elvis impersonators. From ice ages to expeditions, Paiutes to pioneers, and dams to divorce seekers, Roadside History of Nevada provides an overview of the Silver State. Richard Moreno divides Nevada into six geographical-historical areas, rich and often surprising in detail: Pyramid Lake yielded a world-record 41-pound cutthroat trout; Virginia City housed Mark Twain when he wrote for the Territorial Enterprise; and Lovelock Cave was the site of one of the West's greatest archeological misunderstandings. Survey the boom and bust of the mining industry, trace the desperate plight of the Donner party trapped in Sierra snow, and observe the growth of gambling from low-profile to a neon-castle industry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nevada- where the heart is
Often times my state is identified or palagued by las vegas' reputation alone, but nevada is so much more. thank goodness for a balanced book that guides you through the history of nevada without solely concentrating on its sin city.

Great book.My husband is a history junkie and he thinks it is a wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Idaho Librarian Review
Roadside History of Nevada is part of a growing series of books on roadside history published by Mountain Press. To date there are roadside histories available for sixteen states and Yellowstone Park. These books will make valuable traveling companions any time you take a trip and have time to enjoy the historical or geological sites along the way.

The Roadside History of Nevada is a well-written and interesting book.Moreno spends the first chapter reviewing the history of Nevada from its geologic and human prehistory through recorded history to the present time.He then uses the rest of the book to discuss the various roadways and the Nevada towns that were and are inhabited. The book is organized, logically, along the roadways and is divided into six chapters:Interstate 80 (The Emigrant Trail), Reno and the Lake Tahoe Area, US 50 (The Loneliest Road in America), US 95 and US 6 (The Silver Trails), US 93 (The Mormon Trail), and The Las Vegas Area.Within each section, discussion proceeds along the lines of the main highways and the other highways and byways that connect with them.A map of the roads precedes each chapter, but be careful of the Highway 50 map (page 118).It has the highway going into Idaho, not Utah! The book includes 140 photographs which include buildings still standing, ruins of buildings, and pictographs from the earliest humans in the area. There is also a selected bibliography and an excellent index which includes areas, events and people.

If you ever wanted to know how a place got its name or why it was settled, then this is the book for you. This book isn't just about places; it is also about the people who populated them.As I read this book, I found myself wishing that I had had it along on the many trips I have taken through Nevada. As I finished each section of the book, I was ready to get into the car and go exploring the places that Moreno discusses.

Who should read this book?Anyone who has an interest in Nevada and/or western history in general. And anyone who enjoys seeing where history was made.Academic and public librarians will find this book, as well as the series, a good addition to their collections, either as historical information or for description and travel information.

If you find this book interesting, I would recommend other books Richard Moreno has written on outings a person can take throughout Nevada:The Backyard Traveler and The Backyard Traveler Returns. Also consider other books in the Roadside History... and Roadside Geology... series, depending on where your travels take you.The geology series includes twenty-three titles. Unfortunately at the present time Nevada doesn't have the companion roadside geology book, but since Nevada has mining as a major part of its history, it is possible that Roadside History of Nevada and the book Geology Underfoot in Central Nevada can fill the gap for now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Nevada
Rich Moreno is one of the most talented travel writers in the West. His knowledge of Nevada's farthest reaches and the unusual history of each place may be unmatched. In "Roadside History of Nevada," Moreno captures what's best of Nevada, and shows his talents off in a remarkable way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Tro'qhill, the Eagle, Created the World
Ancient folklore holds together this book's two parts, one the hard science of geology, climate, and biology, the other the anthropology of Indian cultures thriving in the Sierras before the first `white' man made his appearance in the mid-16th century. Monache Indians, for example, tell of a devastating winter of terrible storms "a long time ago, before my grandfather, his grandfather, and his grandfather," which drove the people to starvation, cannibalism, and migration. The Tubatulabal tribe recount how the Prairie Falcon, Lim'-ik, created the Sierra mountain range. These tribal stories lead into Jackson's discussion of the region's climate and geology. Each tribe whose descendants still inhabit the southern Sierras--Tubatulabal, Yokuts, Western Monache, Sierra Miwok, Yosemite and Paiute--possesses distinctive folk tales illuminating the linguistic, cultural, and social differences among the tribes. Photographs of cultural artifacts, such as basketry and grinding slabs, and of habitats and hunting gear, reveal something of daily village life, and show how the tribes adapted to their particular environment, whether high sierra, foothill, or coastal region. Detailed maps demonstrate the extent of habitation, and intertribal trading patterns. Jackson, an amateur historian with a passion for her subject, provides extensive notes, references, and both detailed bibliography and index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chapters cover the land's geology, climate, vegetation, animals, and human settlement
The Sierra Nevada Before History: Ancient Landscapes, Early Peoples is a solid study and presentation of California's Sierra Nevada prior to written historical records. Chapters cover the land's geology, climate, vegetation, animals, and human settlement, with specific focus on the Tubatulabal, the Yokuts, the Western Monache, the Sierra Miwok, the Yosemite, and the Paiute. Black-and-white photographs on almost every other page illustrate this enthralling, reader-friendly tour of a rugged and wild land's prehistory. "The soil in the High Sierra was salt-poor and the streams were low in minerals, so animals that preferred the highlands had to adapt. Some rodents, such as the chickaree, or red squirrel, that were normally vegetarian ate meat in the highest regions in order to obtain sufficient salt. Other animals and birds searched out fire ashes or mud at mineral springs to satisfy their cravings." ... Read more

Product Description
A collection of primary source documents dating from 1859 to the present offers new insight into Nevada history.

Nevada’s relatively brief history has been nonetheless remarkably eventful. From the activities of the first Euro-American explorers to the booms and busts of the mining industry, from the struggles and artistry of the Native Americans to the establishment of liberal divorce laws and such unique industries as legalized gambling and prostitution, from Cold War atomic tests to the civil rights movement, from the arrival of a diverse and rapidly growing urban population to the Sagebrush Rebellion, Nevada has played a part in the nation’s development while following its own ruggedly independent path.

In Uncovering Nevada’s Past, historians John B. Reid and Ronald M. James have collected more than fifty major documents and visual images—some never before published—that define Nevada’s colorful and complex development. Here are the words of such literary luminaries as Mark Twain, Sarah Winnemucca, and Arthur Miller; anonymous newspaper articles; public documents including Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation of Nevada statehood and the probate records of murdered Virginia City prostitute Julia Bulette; personal letters; political speeches; and personal accounts of, among other subjects, the construction of Hoover Dam, life in a mining boomtown, racial segregation in Las Vegas, political careers, and atomic testing. Images include photographs of significant Nevada architecture, the masterpieces of renowned Paiute basketmaker Dat-so-la-lee, tree carvings by Basque sheepherders, and tourism promotions. The collection ranges from the earliest descriptions of the region to the current debate on Yucca Mountain.

The volume editors have provided an introduction and headnotes that set the documents into their historical and social context. Uncovering Nevada’s Past is a vital, enlightening record of Nevada’s history—in the words of the people who lived and made it—that makes for lively and engaging reading. ... Read more

Product Description
Nevada entered the Union in 1864 as the thirty-sixth state, a mere two decades after John Charles Frémont and his party undertook the first Euro-American exploration of the Great Basin. However, the intervening years were exceptionally eventful--gold was discovered in California in 1848; the debate over slavery in the territories made the Far West a significant topic of congressional concern; and the Mormon establishment in Utah stimulated national suspicion of the sect's ambitions and policies--giving this remote, sparsely populated region on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada an importance that it probably would not have had in less turbulent times. In 1849, more than 22,000 people traveled the emigrant trails across the Great Basin, and soon Mormons from Utah set up a trading station in the Carson Valley to reap profit from the emigrant trade and anchor the western periphery of what their leader, Brigham Young, envisioned as a Mormon inland empire. Miners in Gold Canyon (just south of what is now Virginia City) and settlers in the Carson Valley were pushing the Native Americans out of their ancient homelands and vying with one another for control of choice land and rudimentary local governments.

In Devils Will Reign, acclaimed historian Sally Zanjani recounts the momentous early history of the territory that is now known as Nevada, weaving the colorful saga of this rowdy frontier into the larger story of national political crises and economic ambitions, rapid development in California, and religious antipathy toward the polygamous Mormons. Here are intrepid frontiersmen, beleaguered Native Americans, zealous Mormons, and colorful characters and farmers, including a group of African Americans who successfully settled in the Carson Valley. Zanjani covers the lives of the pioneers, as well as the development and impact of the Comstock silver bonanza and the tenuous, halting efforts of the region's residents to create first a territorial, then a state government. Seldom has the process of western settlement and government-making been described with such detail and insight. ... Read more

From Las Vegas, Mount Charleston looks like little more than a giant gravel mound in the distance, towering 11,916 feet above the neon lights of the entertainment capital of the world. Only a fraction of the nearly 40 million people who visit this 24-hour city ever bother to look west and skyward toward the mountain. The truth is that this very mountain is a silent memorial to fourteen men who died there in a plane crash on November 17, 1955; men who were part of the secret development of the U-2 spy plane, integral to America's success in the Cold War. The United States government was so determined to keep their mission a secret that it lied to the families of the victims, sealed the crash records and even rigged the site with explosives in an effort to obliterate any remnants of their existence. If it weren't for the curiosity of one visitor, the national secret that haunted the mountainside might never have been revealed. In these pages, finally, the story is told. ... Read more

I've seen the crash site on Mt. Charleston on many occasions and have wondered who was on board and way they crashed.I would never have guessed the story was to amazing! It is intriguing to say the least. The book tells many stories. It first puts you on the plane the day it slammed the mountain. Then it tells the story of the rescue party that risked their lives to bring the bodies down off the mountain. Then the book takes a unusual turn, telling the story of a boy scout leader that visits the crash site alone and something follows him down the mountain - a must read.
The second half of the book relates the stories of the 14 men and their families that were kept in the dark for over 40 years due to the extreme level of security surrounding Area 51 and the U2 spy plane. There are lots of amazing twists and turns. It truly was not only a fun read but tugged at my heart strings.I have visited the crash site since reading the book and felt the emotion surrounding the sacrifices of true American heroes.

"This is a volume that would be a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone looking for a reliable reference work on Nevada government and politics. It will appeal to anyone seeking to understand those subjects in the context of a turbulent past which, in many ways, is strikingly unique among states of the West and the nation." —Western Historical Quarterly

"In Nevada, as elsewhere, historical and environmental forces have influenced government and politics. Michael W. Bowers’ books succeeds in capturing the dynamics of this process. This concise work explains how Nevada government actually works and how the area’s history has shaped its political culture." —Journal of the West

Since its publication in 1996, The Sagebrush State has served as the text for the required course on Nevada’s history and constitution given at the state’s colleges and universities. The third edition of this work is updated through 2005 to include information on the elections of 2002 and 2004 and two very controversial sessions of the legislature.

Yes there were hardships, but no one to tell us that we could only build a certain way or someone to come and take your children if you had too many. The only one who will ever be able to own this much land again ....the Government! How sad. Read this awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reading
This book is a real page turner. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. It was satisfying from beginning to end and I did not want it to end. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read...
The struggles and hardships survived by this family should make us think twice about whining when we've had a bad day at the office, the dog throws up on the carpet, there's a traffic jam on the way home, the cable guy is four hours late, or any of the other happenings we find annoying in our modern lives.(how about that three-day trip to town and back?)As an animal lover, I skimmed over the semi-graphic descriptions of trapping animals.Other than that, an enthralling read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
I was turned on to this book by the authors great nephew. This woman's tale of hardship, perseverance and determination is one to be admired by all. An easy read and a wonderful adventure.

Product Description
Building Hoover Dam is the most intriguing book ever written about one of the modern architectural wonders of the world.Andrew J. Dunar and Dennis McBride skillfully interweave first-hand accounts of a fascinating group of eyewitnesses.Their stories create the richest existing portrait of the building of Hoover Dam and its tremendous effect on the lives of those involved in its creation:the gritty, sometimes grisly realities of living in cardboard boxes and tents during several of the hottest Southern Nevada summers on record; the fearsome carbon monoxide deaths of tunnel builders who, it was claimed, had died of "pneumonia"; the uproarious life of nearby Las Vegas versus the tightly controlled existence of the workers in the built-overnight confines of Boulder City; and of course the astounding accomplishment of building the Dam itself and completing the task not only early but under budget! ... Product Description
The Great Depression of the 1930s had a devastating impact on sparsely populated Nevada and its two major industries, mining and agriculture. Even prior to the national economic collapse, nature and overgrazing had rendered millions of acres in the arid state unusable. However, thanks to Nevada’s powerful senate delegation, Roosevelt’s New Deal funding flowed abundantly into the state. Among the programs thus supported was the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal program intended to provide jobs for unemployed young men and a pool of labor for essential public lands rehabilitation projects.

In all, nearly 31,000 young men were employed in fifty-nine CCC camps throughout Nevada, most of them from outside the state. These "boys," as they were called, went to work improving the state’s forests, parks, wildlife habitats, roads, fences, irrigation systems, flood–control systems, and rangelands, while learning valuable skills on the job, through vocational courses, and in a formal education program intended to help them find employment when the economy improved. Rural communities near CCC camps reaped additional benefits when local men were hired as foremen and when the camps purchased supplies from local merchants.

The Civilian Conservation Corps in Nevada is based on extensive research in private manuscript collections, unpublished memoirs, CCC inspectors’ reports and other records, government documents, newspapers, and other sources, as well as on interviews with CCC veterans and personnel. The book also includes period photographs depicting the Nevada CCC and its activities.

This is the first comprehensive history of the Nevada CCC, a program designed to help the nation get back on its feet, and of the "boys" who did so much to restore Nevada’s lands and resources—and who in the process became men. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Long on statistics but well worth the read.
This is a worthwhile statewide history of the CCC that should appeal to both the leisure reader and the scholarly researcher.Anyone who's undertaken to research just a single CCC camp knows what a daunting job that can be; imagine researching CCC work across an entire state!Utilizing a range of source material Kolvet and Ford detail CCC work under every technical service that operated in Nevada from 1933 to 1942.Of particular interest is the camp listing at the rear of the book, which lists Nevada's CCC camps in groups by designation: Division of Grazing (DG), Bureau of Reclamation (BR), Biological Survey/Fish & Wildlife Service (BF/FWS), National and State Park (NP/SP), Navy (M), Forest Service (F) and Soil Conservation Service (SCS or PE or P for camps on private lands or for work done for a private entity).Often long on statistical data, this book is nevertheless a must-have for any CCC or New Deal library, as it includes the personal memories of men who will not be around to tell their story too much longer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Road side geologists will love this book
We thoroughly enjoyed this book while driving through Nevada on Hwy93. An amazing geologic region! The book is well done including side trips which we may take next year. If it could be improved upon, it would be to eliminate references to the left or right side of the road and stick with north south east and west in the descriptions. That way the book is easier to follow driving either direction. ... Read more

Product Description
The meteoric rise of Las Vegas from Mormon outpost to international entertainment center. Since Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905, when the Union Pacific auctioned off land around its new railroad shops, the city has grown from a ramshackle village to a sprawling metropolitan area of well over a million people.

Las Vegas: A Centennial History offers a detailed and deeply knowledgeable account of the growth of this unique city, the impact of politics and of wars, and the city’s struggle to establish diversified economy. The authors’ scope extends chronologically from the first Paiute people who settled around the artesian springs that gave the city its name, right up to the construction of the latest megaresort, and geographically far beyond the original township to include the several municipalities that make up the metropolitan Las Vegas area.

Las Vegas: A Centennial History celebrates the city’s unparalleled growth in the brief century of its existence. It also offers fresh insight into the process of city building in the American West, where urban needs and aspirations must contend with water scarcity, isolation, erratic economies, highly diverse populations, and the rocky relationship between the need for civic order and the Western spirit of independence. Its story will engage residents and visitors alike, as well as all readers interested in the history and workings of an American city. ... Read more
