Excerpt: The New Brunswick Liberal Association, (French: Association libérale du Nouveau-Brunswick) more popularly known as the New Brunswick Liberal Party or Liberal Party of New Brunswick, is one of the two major political parties in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The party descended from both the Confederation Party and the Anti-Confederation Party whose members split into left wing and right wing groups following the creation of Canada as a country in 1867. The left leaning organization emerged in the 1880s to serve as an organization housing the supporters of Premier Andrew G. Blair and, later, federal Liberal Party of Canada leader Wilfrid Laurier. Today, the New Brunswick Liberal Party competes with the Progressive Conservatives to form the government. Both are considered centrist parties. The social democratic New Democratic Party of New Brunswick is the only other major party, but it is not a contender for government. Like its counterparts in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan, the New Brunswick Liberal Association serves both the federal Liberal party and acts as the provincial party. While its leader acts only in the provincial capacity, the party executive organizes for both provincial and federal election campaigns. Past presidents of the New Brunswick Liberal Association (term): A. G. BlairPrior to Canadian confederation, advocates of responsible government ran und...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=418690 ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The New Brunswick NDP traces its roots to the Fredericton Socialist League, which was founded in 1902. The League had branches throughout the province by World War I.In 1933, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, a federal political party, was formed with the proclamation of the Regina Manifesto. In 1933, the Moncton Trades and Labour Council adopted a resolution to create a branch of the CCF in New Brunswick. This led to the creation of the New Brunswick CCF that year.Despite its early formation, the New Brunswick CCF was slow at establishing itself on the provincial political scene. It ran only one candidate in the 1939 election, Joseph C. Arrowsmith in the riding of Saint John City, winning 712 votes. The fortunes of the New Brunswick CCF rose in tandem with the fortunes of the national CCF during World War II. In the 1944 provincial election the CCF won 11.7 percent of the vote under the leadership of J. A. Mugridge, a trade unionist and the chief electrician at the St. John Drydock and Shipbuilding Company. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The New Brunswick electoral redistribution of 2006 was undertaken as a result of legislation introduced by Bernard Lord, the Premier of New Brunswick, Canada, on June 9, 2005. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every decennial Canadian census. The redistribution process set out in the legislation took approximately six months to complete, and was overseen by an independent commission. The bill introduced by the government would have required that 55 ridings be maintained with populations varying between 75% and 110% of 1/55 of the provincial population. The Opposition Liberals expressed a desire for the commission to have greater flexibility either in the variance of the average population or in the number of districts. On June 30, 2005, an agreement was reached and the bill was amended to allow the commission to ignore population basis entirely in "extraordinary circumstances," but should strive to be within the range of 90% to 110% of the average population of 55 districts. There was considerable work to be done as 35 out of the 55 districts that existed from the outset were outside of the +/- 10% range. This is due in part to the population shifts over the course of a decade, and because the requirement was +/- 25% during the previous redistribution. In the end, the commission was able to maintain most districts in their same alignment by means of minor boundary adjustments. However, two sets of districts were merged and there were considerable changes of district boundaries in the cities Dieppe and Fredericton. On November 21, 2005, the Commission released its preliminary recommendations f...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2020725 ... Read more

Excerpt: Old Government House, Fredericton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Indended specifically to replace the residence of the colonial Lieutenant Governors of New Brunswick that burned down in 1825, Old Government House was erected between 1826 and 1828 on the site of the former Acadian settlement of Sainte-Anne and it served as the place for meetings between the viceroy and his Executive Council, balls, and state dinners. In 1890, however, Lieutenant Governor Samuel Leonard Tilley felt the maintenance budget for the house was insufficient and consequently relocated, after which the former viceregal residence took on other roles; from 1896 to 1900, it served as a school for the hearing impaired, was a military barracks through World War I, a soldiers' hospital following the war, and, from 1934 to 1988, was the J Division regional headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, during which time it was in 1958 designated as a National Historic Site. Only on 1 July 1999, after two years of extensive renovation and restoration of the structure and its interiors, was the mansion returned to viceregal service in a ceremony including representatives of the Maliseet First Nation, the ancestors of which performed dances on New Year's Day 164 years earlier, both times to demonstrate the importance of the relationship between they and the Crown. Old Government House is where the Canadian Royal Family and visiting foreign dignitaries are greeted and often stay while in Fredericton. It is also where numerous royal and viceroyal events take place, such as the bestowing of provincial awards or inducti... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1410632 ... Read more
