Ancient history at best
The high school that is the subject of this book was on a creative track, but then lost its way. Faculty understood the underlying principles, but did not have the methods or mastery to make the dream a reality over the long haul. Today the school has experienced serious violence, theft, declining test scores and many of the same challenges as any other troubled high school in America. It makes one wonder if Silva's book is anything more than a feel-good exercise in creative thinking.

I love this book.
The thing about this book that catches my attention is the illustrations.You feel what Rosie feels and you see what is happening so clearly.It is a great book and my daughter loves it.

A book for beginner ballerinas
I read this book to my 3 year neice who had just recently been to her first dance class.She later mimicked what she had learned from the book - pointing her toes, first & second position, etc.All in all - a funread with very nice pictures.My five year old nephew was also interestedin the book.

This book is cotton candy for the eyes.

Wonderful historical fiction - brings 1919 alive through a boy's eyes
I just finished reading The Trouble with Jeremy Chance and I think it's a great read, and it really brings the past alive. Jeremy is 12 years old and lives in New Hampshire - his brother is away fighting WW1, and his mother recently died of Spanish Influenza. Other historical events - the Molasses Flood in Boston (wow!), meeting hobos riding the rails, seeing new-fangled cars and airplanes. Jeremy is a wonderfully developed character, as is his father, and their developing relationship - Jeremy developing some independence, and his father realizing how he's growing up - make this is warm and fulfilling read.

The Trouble with Jeremy Chance
I couldn't wait to see him he is finally home safe. This novel takes place during the World War I era in New England, viewed through the eyes of 12-year-old Jeremy Chance, who disagrees with his father about how to treat other people. Jeremy's mother died of the Spanish Influenza a few months earlier, and Jeremy still misses for her. His father is a good man, but isn't not thinking completely straight about life. The ordeal creates tension between his father and himself, and he is so frustrated he decides to take off on his own to Boston, where he will find his brother's ship. His brother has been fighting the Germans over in Europe, and is now coming home. While there, Jeremy proves his manhood, and his father realizes that he must now respect Jeremy as a man and allow him to have his own opinions about life and what's right. I do recommend this book at points but don't at others.

Jeremy is a real life character, believable and it is easy to believe he is12 years old and hoping to be a man. The author clearly did his research for the historical setting and events that occurred during World War I. The few pictures, are black and white and ties the novel together.

The novel is realistic. The author writes about the war and its conditions. They seem to have great knowledge of the war. They make Jeremy seem as if he was my brother.

The novel related to the war and informed you of it. They explained the war's conditions and the effort we put into it. Ichose this book do to the reason that I'm learning about World War I in social studies. That was a good factor about it because it helped me learn about the war.

The novel is not detailed well. The author did not spend too much time on detail. They put in minor detail but not as much as there should be. I do recommend this book to people who love books about war.

Really good book!!!!!
I recommend this book because it is good.It has a lot of detail but not too much and it didn't get boring.I think Jeremy was a mix between brave (because he went to Boston all by himself), sad (because his Mom died by influenza), and happy (because his brother was coming home from the war in a few weeks).The story was set in the early 1900's and that was very interesting because life was very different than it is today.For example, I did not know there was a disease called influenza.The most interesting part of the book was when Jeremy got caught in a molasses flood.Other people got burned, or stuck to the pavement, or died.And horses got stuck in the barns and people had to shoot them.This all happened in Boston and that's where I live.It says in the back of the book that the molasses flood really happened.I think this author is a really good writer and I want to read more of his books. ... A Unique Historical Account

Blos, Joan W., author. A Gathering of Days. (1979).
A Historical Fiction Chapter Book.This is my 7th chapter book reviewed.
Winner of the Newberry Honor
Time Period and Setting:New Hampshire:1830-1832

Written in the form of a journal, it is a story about a thirteen year old girl who finds courage within after her mom dies.In her journal, Catherine tells of her experiences in keeping house for her father and sister, the events of living in pre-civil war days, and the changes that take place in her life.She discusses many of the historical events of the time period.
On the "Author's Note" page at the front of the book, the author writes, "I worked with documents and books and newspapers of the region, visited museums and small collections, and even explored old graveyards in search of further clues" (page unnumbered).It is with this care that the author is able to present a largely authentic story.Unveiling the time, settings, and events appear to be done with care.It is a way for readers to understand more about "Young America."
Late elementary and early middle school students would find a personal connection to the story through its "journal" form.The entries are intriguing and they build up each other. In as much, students would find connection socially and personally to the character, Catherine.Some of the events in the story are much discussed. Looking at the world from her viewpoint could advance student's discoveries and help them to gather their own personal opinions of the valuable circumstances.

Was it worth it?
I found the book "A Gathering of Days" interesting and filled with small pieces of history, but it was hard to comprehend and hard to read. The format of the book, journal entries written by a young girl, is neat, but her usage of out-dated words is odd and it takes time to grasp her meaning. Although this book was directed to a younger audience, I believe that older kids would better understand the phrases and words used. If you are interested in reading and seeing for yourself how life was and how people spoke in the 1800's, this book is perfect. The story was sweet and descriptive, but in my opinion, it is a one-time around book, and did not leave a huge impact on me.

A Gathering of Days
I did not enjoy reading the book, A Gathering of Days. The entire book uses odd phrasology that detracts from the overall effect of the story. The word choices throughout the book make it very difficult to read and understand. The story is fine in and of itself but I was unable to enjoy the story because of the heavy word usage and poor sentence structures.

Ok for school not for fun
It was an ok book. I think that it takes a very special talent to write a historical journal and this author didn't have it. With a journal you are suppose to write your personal feelings and thoughts. But this author never really wrote Catherine's feelings, which misses a big opportunity to relate to the character. Also with journals normally that have one big problem and then small every day problems. The one big problem is resolved at the end of the book and the small problems are resolved in about a week. A Gathering of Days didn't have every day problems and had three some what big problems that were never drawn out. It is a quick read and great if you are doing a lot of research on that time period with other books. If you are reading this for fun don't bother its not entertaining.

"not the best book"
I read this book for school. It is the journal of a 13 yr. old girl.
Why is it "not the best book"?
1. The story is fairly dull. Most of it is about her everyday life (some people might find that interesting, but I didn't AT ALL)
2. The most exciting things that happen in the story, aren't that exciting.
3. There is not really a "climax" to the story.
4. Sometimes, she starts to write about an event in her journal, but never finishes it.
5. It is written in 1800's style English, making it hard to understand sometimes.
6. It abruptly ends; there isn't really a "conclusion" or a wrapping up of her thoughts.
These are the reasons that this isn't the best book. I would NOT read it again or for pleasure.
