A Good Guide to Have
This book contains very useful information for people, who are on a tight budget and relatively new in New York.

Great book for people that are new to NYC
This is a wonderful book for people that are relatively new to NYC. It provides lots of information on free or low budget activities that the city has to offer. If you follow the activities suggested in the book, they will keep you busy in a long while!

Good Job
Well done Cheap Bastard!!You could take some of the ideas in this book and do them anywhere!!Some of the things you'd have to actaully live in New York but if you're trying to stick to a budget I'd recommend this book for sure, however...you NEED to plan!!Some things need to be booked at least 2 weeks in advance and if you leave a message be prepared to follow up...give yourself enough time to plan on some of the free tours!!

Clear and accurate
I love this map; lost it, and bought another.Much better than the messily laid-out laminated maps; there's also a mini version by the same company, and a Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan map which are worth having if you're in that area often. ... Read more

Spectacular 3D
I really love this book. The viewer is built into the front cover, so you hold that up while you turn the pages. You have to relax your eyes and then all of a sudden they kick in and you are seeing wonderful 3D images of the past. I went through the whole book right away but I know it is one that I will be getting out every so often to see the pictures again. I also have the other 5 of these books and have enjoyed all of them. I highly recommend this book if you want to see wonderful 3D images.

"Thanks for the great New York City Stereo Look Back album. The postman delivered it yesterday, and as today is dreary and rainy, a good 'stay indoors day' this morning was ideal to view and carefully study details of each photo. I enjoyed the photos especially since after graduating from high school in January 1949, I took a job in the financial area of Manhattan (site of many of the photos), and was able to relate with the locations, and some of the buildings. Thanks again for your thought. But tell me, how in the world did you come across the album?"

Actually I found it next to other stereo view books by googleing stereo photos. Knowing some of the photo sites from occasional visits, it was fascinating to see the amazing vintage photo quality and the 3D effects with some dramatic views. The explanatory comments were a perfect crash course in American history and the early advanced bridge and building construction technology in those days. Being a stereo card collector myself I can appreciate the reproduction quality and the integrated flap-lens stereo viewer that comes with it. I think this integrated concept is a great idea and even the kids enjoy history this way a lot more compared to text books (especially with the current 3D media hype). However the printing resolution has potential for improvement and the heavy and bulky glass lenses of the flap-type viewer could be replaced by paper-flat and light-weight plastic Fresnel magnifier lenses that would even fit inside a paperback format version to reduce production cost.
5 stars worth anyhow as well as for: London in 3D: A Look Back in Time: With Built-in Stereoscope Viewer-Your Glasses to the Past! and Brian May's A Village Lost and Found that comes with a detachable folding 3D viewer and compares Victorian courtyside stereo card photos with contemporary colour stereo views of the re-identified original sites

(As a hint for AMAZON's "LOOK INSIDE" feature and eventually for other viewerless print versions: it is possible to view stereo photos in 3D also on screen without stereo viewers, if the right and left photos are exchanged for bare cross-eyed view - impressive examples can be found on the web.)

Fine Book - But...
Book and viewer page - great concept! Cover pic. should have been included in the book. All pics. should have been dated. Some selections could have been better. Four pics. very little 3D:Woolworth Bldg. - St. Paul's Chapel - Barnum Museum after fire - Grand Central Depot. Five pics. no 3D at all: Immigrants Arriving at Ellis Island - Free Reading Room - Bathers at Coney Island - Liesurely Group in Central Park - Limited Express in Central Park. One pic. reversed 3D - Metropolitan Fair on 14th St. I still like the book and will consider purchasing others. Proofing and editing must be better.

Living history for an excellent price
All of the books in this series are great. As a stereocard maker and enthusiast, I was excited about the release of these books.
Good points: Excellent price! Excellent construction with the fold out viewer in the cover and excellent graphics giving it an 'antique' feel. Some very rare views are presented that would cost a fortune to purchase. The descriptions originally printed on the card's verso are reproduced here on the preceding page to each image so that they can be viewed and read all at once... And, did I mention the excellent price?
Weak points: Some cards which already suffered from poor image quality are made 'grainy' by the halftone printing. A few of the images are not in 3D. A few images have the left and right images reversed. While the original cards may have been this way, the least they could have done was correct them or note the error in the descriptions.
Still, these few and minor weaknesses do not detract from the overall quality of the books. Nothing can really describe seeing historical moments and people in 3D.These books should be in classrooms. I look forward to the next 2 releases in the series.

Superb!!
Wow....for $14 you get to step back in time and transplant yourself into NYC from 1840 - 1920's.... The viewer is superb, the image quality considering the 150+ year old images the author had to use...and the low cost printing technique was much better than I expected...The book cover has a great padded feel.... Dinkins hit a home run with this one...

I have a few other Dinkins 3d books, but this one is the best.... the imagery lends itself very well to the 3d effect...the photographers in their day had excellent technique.... the cost per view is ridiculously low vs. any other type of stereo viewing technique. I highly recommend this NYC 3d book. ... Read more

A beautiful reference book
The best way to understand what you see about when visiting New York. Why is it all like this ?... How it happened to be ?... Very clear, easy to read, nice illustrations. Either before visiting the city or after. Very Good !

Review of History of New York
This is a great pictorial and editorial history of the city.Being an Aussie I was looking for something that took me back to the roots of the city which this did. Somewhat brief in many areas it is a general history lesson on the city in an easy to read format which reminded me somewhat of a high school history book.Lacks detail but was what I was looking for as an introductory and complete base knowledge of the City of NY.
My knowledge of the City is now enhanced (from nothing) to the point where I am condident I am far more knowledgable about the history, geography and culture of New York that I was prior to this purchase.

Celebration of 400 Years of NY city
This book was a gift to my daughter. SHe asked me to buy it for her for Christmas. I asked her how would she rate the book .. Phenomenal .. was her ansewer.

A researcher's short cut
The Historical Atlas of New York City solved a huge problem for me. I'm writing a novel set partly in New York in 1864, and while I lived in the City in 1964, that's a hundred years too late for this novel! I live now where research facilities are slim, and I needed something to show me where people lived, shopped, worked, entertained themselves.

This book answered my questions. It showed me which landmark buildings were on which streets then and gave me the background for the characters who inhabit my novel and the City. It has prevented me from having a character walk past the Flatiron building, or attend a ball at the Waldorf-Astoria.

It also confirmed that elderly gentlemen probably played chess in Tompkins Square Park just as they did a hundred years later, and that the brownstones around Washington Square were inhabited by wealthy families.

It has enabled me to put some of my own reminiscences (faithfully recorded in my journals of the time) into the book while avoiding some anomalies.

Not all my questions were resolved in this book, but studying the maps gave me enough information about the trains in New York to avoid some errors, like describing Grand Central Station, because it gives the date that amazing edifice was built.

Great way to find your way around in NY
This atlas is very good, nicely detailed, well laid out and very crisply printed.This size is perfect for your glove box or carry it with you.If you wanted to plot out alternate routes or just to see the "big" picture then the larger size would be suggested.Note that this smaller version was labeled on Amazon as laminated but it was not.A bit of a let down but the price made it a steal. ... Incredibly useful
As a New Yorker, I was pleasantly surprised by this book's usefulness.And based on the knowledgeable entries, it is clear that author has done her research (i.e., she actually visited the places and talked to the vendors).Perhaps more importantly, you can tell that the author really enjoys going to these markets.In fact, I found her fun, generous spirit to be contagious to the point of making me want to visit the markets now.(Alas, I am writing this on a weekday.)The author's generosity extends to her subjects: she doesn't just touch on a few vendors, but seemingly covers all of them, and she gives you background information that will help shoppers make informed decisions about how much or whether to haggle.

I loved the introduction (and I usually skip these), especially her comments on bargaining, lessons learned and the "Dos and Don't of Exploring NYC."The City and every guide book should post these Dos and Don'ts!Then maybe New Yorkers wouldn't be so annoyed at tourists for blocking the whole sidewalk when we need to get somewhere.

There's something for everyone in this book: crafts, jewelry, finds and food.I was impressed that "Markets of NYC" not only covers Manhattan's core, but also above and beyond 96th Street, and three of the outer boroughs.For the local and the returning tourist, the entries in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx are doubly useful.

I googled the book and found a related website where the author updates information and blogs about various markets and events.Cool.

Good if you dont live in NYC
I am a bit of a market junky, so was excited to get this book, however for me living in NYC for the past 4 years,I mostly knew about the markets. There are a couple new ones that I am looking forward to checking out. I would say this book is better for people who either dont live in NYC, are new to NYC or overall dont go to very many markets.

I thought this book was for tourists, but it's not
I hesitated to buy this book because I thought:

1) This book is for tourists

2) It can't contain any information that can't be found on the internet

But something made me buy it and I'm truly impressed.The book is sturdy, nicely sized, succinctly written, with beautiful pictures.

For one, it's not just for tourists.The first week I had it I found three markets that I would have other missed within walking vicinity of where I was in the city.

Secondly, they've done the internet research for you, and have included a bunch of info that you wouldn't find anywhere but from the mouth of a New Yorker.

Out of Date and Inaccurate
Due to the long time it takes to print a travel guide they are often out of date and inaccurate by the time they come out.Fodor's is no exception to this rule.Travel guides are going the way of newspapers. People can get more up to date and accurate information on the internet.Unfortunately Fodor's web site is as ancient as their print guides.Go to [...] or [...] for more recent information.

A tour guide that fun to read.
I found that Fodor's New York city tour guide fun to read and proved invaluable on my trip to NYC. There are other guide out for NYC but this one at least to me proved fun to read and use. Now that I have a copy with the maps to the subway
I really expect to have big fun using the Metro pass in NYC. This book gave me to confidence to explore at least in Mahattan, I will hit the other part later.If you can only afford one tour guide to NYC this is the one to own and turn your friends onto this guide as well so they can have a great vaction.

Preparing for NY
I liked the old style of Fodors books better, but it is very detailed and descriptive.Not very well organized, and it will have you flipping back and forth quite a bit, searching through the different chapters.

Fodor's Knows NYC
Fodor's New York City 2009 (Full-Color Gold Guides) came to me from Shelf Awareness in preparation for Book Expo America. I requested the guide to make plans for navigating the city, and it was a great resource for the trip this past weekend.

There are full-color pages throughout of various landmarks, monuments, and other places. There is a pull out map inside with clearly labeled streets and landmarks, as well as a subway system map in the back flap for Manhattan. The subway map helped during the trip to determine which line of the subway to take to our destinations, including to the hotel from Penn Station and from the hotel to the Greenhouse.

Anna and I did pick out a few things to see while in the city, but unfortunately, I revisited Times Square and not much else. Anna saw Times Square for the first time, though it was incredibly crowded. At one point during the day on Friday, we walked by and found Broadway closed off and lawn chairs spread out. According to my friend and photographer, Mike, the lawn chairs are part of a program to get people in office buildings out into the sun during the day, allowing them to breathe in the fresh air.

Fodor's guide is chock full of information about the subway system, its costs, fare cards, and other transportation needs, including appropriate tip amounts for taxis, bellhops, and others. I would highly recommend this guide for those taking a trip to New York City; it provides a comprehensive resource for those looking to see as much as they can in the city that never sleeps. I know I'll be using this guide again when I take my next trip to the city.

NYC Guide
I admit that I have a weakness for color photographs in travel guides.I think they're much more fun to browse that way, and really seem to bring the region to life.So, I'm pretty thrilled that Fodor's now has a series of guidebooks all in color, and that they're really not much more expensive than guidebooks that aren't in full color.

In terms of information presented, the guidebook doesn't recreate the wheel or break out of the box.In my opinion, that's good- when you're traveling, you don't want to be wasting time trying to figure out how to navigate your guidebook.The guide is broken out in sections by area of the city, and then by entertainment, shopping, dining and lodging.

Personally, I prefer guidebooks that have all the entertainment, shopping, dining and lodging options =within= the detailed information about areas of cities (for example, in the chapter on Greenwich, I'd like to have restaurants in Greenwich there, rather than in another chapter closer to the end).However, this is pretty standard practice across guidebooks.

I think the best part of the Fodor's guide is the "Word-of-Mouth" tidbits sprinkled throughout, with information from locals on what to see, when to see it, and how to do it best.I also like the "In Focus" series, which gives greater detail on museums, shopping districts and neighborhoods.

Overall, I think this is a good buy as I think the majority of the information won't go obsolete quickly, and it looks so pretty presented in color. ... Read more

Nice size to carry.Good information, however, difficult to find info without going to index.And one has to flip from one map to another.It almost assumes one knows where there are to begin with.But well organized if you already know a lot about NYC.

Moon Metro New York -- What a star!
I decided to bring Moon Metro New York City with me on my first trip to the Big Apple. I couldn't have made a better decision! This guidebook never failed me once in my travels through the city. I loved how easy it was to read, the colorful pages, the insightful descriptions, and the pocketbook size. I'm going to make sure my next vacation will be a destination that Moon Metro covers! Avalon Travel Publishing and Moon Metro New York City deserve five stars.

Best guidebook I've ever used, period.
I've used lots of different travel guides in the past but have always been disappointed with something about them, so I usually end up bringing two or three books with me, which [stinks] big time. That's why I really like these Metro books. Small, chock full of info the I need, and easy to use. Besides the cool blue covers, what really makes them stand out is the foldout maps. I've used the SF and NYC Metros and regretted buying the Fodors and Let's Gos. Save yourself some luggage space, time, and money and pick up one of these books instead of a pile of the others.

Great guide!
I've never written one of these reviews before, but after using Moon Metro: New York City on my last trip, I simply had to say how helpful it was. The maps were fantastic and made a city that was new to me incredibly accessible. My friends and I picked several restaurants and shops at random from the book and were never disappointed. Great learning tool!
A great way to teach children the key sites in NYC.I live in the city and my nephew in Oklahoma, so this is a great way for his parents to be able to show him where his uncle lives!

Good book for young children
The book is interesting and my 21-month-old daughter loves looking at it. I am sure she doesn't quite get what New York city means yet, but it does show sights that are familiar to her. The text is minimal and pretty basic, so I wouldn't think this is a book for kids over 5. It starts the day with a visit to the Statue of Liberty, then to the UN with children playing in front of it, then police on horseback and a firetruck, then there is a page with NYC skyline and the Empire State Building up front, then Central Park, after that is the Bronx Zoo, the Public Library, a hot dog stand, musicals, and finally, everyone goes to bed in what looks like the Upper West Side with brownstone buildings.

Son loves it!
We purchased this book for our 20 month old son and he loves it! He picks it out over and over again!Great book!

Good memories
This book provides great pictures and a fun way to share a special city with my daughter.Some of the text is a bit silly, but overall I have enjoyed this book along with several others in the series.

A Great Resource!

There are so many books out there, this one I highly recommend.

In a nutshell:THE BASIC 5-STEP CHECKLIST was really helpful, They are: 1) Identifying Your Child's Need's. 2) Informing Yourself. 3) Educating Your Child. 4)Entering the World of Special Education. 5) Locating a School. (My only complaint is that I almost missed it - as it was in the Introduction section of the book, and I don't always read that. If you buy this book don't skip the Preface and Introduction.)

The book then addresses each of these processes, in a really concise way. In the middle of the book there is a section called School Profiles that gives a really informative description of Special education schools. the authors write that they personally visited each school and met with the directors, saw the programs first hand, gathered all the relevant criteria. I don't know of another book that has this type of detailed information.
The sections on how to apply to a school, how to prepare yourself and your child, how to work with the CSE (Committee on Special Education) and the DOE (Department of Education) are full of information that I was able to personally follow and recommend to others.
It's also endorsed by Michele Shackelford, Program Director for the Center for Attention & Learning Disorders, Lenox Hill Hospital NYC.

A Great Resource
This book is a valuable resource for any parent trying to navigate the special ed system in NYC.

I am a special educator, and I frequently give this book to parents who want their children enrolled in schools for special needs children.It is a very valuable resource to, both, parents and educators.

A vital necessity for NY parents with special needs
As a parent of a child with special needs I found this book invaluable for the information about the schools and the chidren that they serve. Also important were the tips on managing the very complicated application process and the dos and don'ts for the tours. the authors have made a difficult and stressful process a little easier for the parents (and children) who have to go through it. Bravo!!
I hope this can be expanded and revised at least every other year to include new programs (and ones previously not included) as they arise.

Little book / Big reward
How cool. An insiders source to great finds.. helps navigate a busy place easily! If you've ever shopped the out of the way places in the city, it isn't easy. Now it can be with this cute pocket size gem !ENJOY!

Good little guide
I love this book. It does NOT fit in the palm of your hand. The book is 4 inches by 4 inches and 1 inch thick with 336 pages plus blank pages for notes. It is NOT a tourist's guide book. The title says it all, curious shopper. The author lists places for different fabrics, kitchenware, millinery, art supplies, anitques, collectibles and more, within the same area. Many things are discounted from the high-end prices. Also she lists places to eat nearby. If you're not going to NYC to sight-see but to find different things, I would highly recommend this book. I will be taking it with me on my next visit.

The book was good but it had many areas of shopping that the average shopper would not be interested in.It was petite in size which i could throw into my person while roaming around the streets in New York.

Mixed review
This atlas replaced my 1989 atlas. The new atlas has maps which are clearer, and the book contains more information than the old edition.Both of these rate a plus.But the pages are printed on much thinner paper than the old edition.The book is spiral bound and the pages tear easily. Thinner paper means the book will wear out quickly, which is disappointing.

A great buy!
This comment is not only to say how well priced this easy to read map is- it is also to praise Amazon for their wonderful and fast customer service; the map arrived slightly damaged; customer service immediately sent a new one, without even waiting for the damaged one to be returned, for which we did not have to pay postage (which is only fair here!)

great book

excellent resource
This book is everything I'd want in a book about the natural history of where I live. Plants, animals, fungi, rocks! I especially love the etymology of all the scientific names and the section that details the traits and histories of all the parks in the area. I aim to visit them all. It's a lot more relaxed than a bird-specific field guide, a more pleasurable read.

Almost complete
This book is a handsome, valuable addition to the library (or backpack) of NYC dwelling natural history lovers.Unfortunately, it is not "complete," as several reviews suggest.Missing, for example, is the red-eared slider(Trachemys scripta elegans), the most commonly seen turtle in Central Park.Migrant and occasional bird species, too, are not to be found.The wild turkey is now reestablished on parts of Manhattan, but does not find a place in Day's guide.There are many such oversights; generally, however, I recommend the book.

NYC's amazing treasure trove of nature!

Mourning Doves have blue eyes

Leslie Day describes her book perfectly in the first chapter:

"Today the city is a complex ecosystem, the result of its tumultuous history. Hundreds of species of birds inhabit its streets, parks and waters. Insects, worms, crustaceans, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds,mammals, trees, wildflowers, and mushrooms are within walking distance of virtually every apartment building, house, and hotel. The city has more than 500 miles of coastline, some fringed with saltwater marshes, such as the islands of Jamaica Bay in Queens. New York's 37,000 acres of parks contain hundreds of species waiting to be discovered, identified, and appreciated by the reader. This guide is designed to make the natural world of New York City accessible by revealing the living and diverse, and ancient geological treasures the city has to offer."

She describes her book with the help of well done drawings by Mark A. Klingler and a number of color photographs. Day is a keen observer: we've fed dozens of mourning doves over the years, but I've never noticed the color of their eyes. As she told a "New York Times" reporter: "If you look closely in their eyes, they are blue. It's startlingly beautiful."

(During the same interview walking around a single block, Day identified several trees and a lichen: Willow Oak, Honey Locust, Sophora Tree (aka "Eve's Necklace"), three Callery Pears, Mulberry (with two types of leaves: some egg-shaped, others lobed), London Plane, several Lindens, and, of course, a Gingko.)

Day maintains an interesting website devoted to the Guide, and posts short, informative, well illustrated updates on new developments in New York City. The last few entries included a Harp Seal at the Boat Basin on 79th Street (where she lives on a house boat), Winter Weeping Willows, and Canvas Back Ducks.

This is a very human view of one of our greenest cities.

A treasure for New Yorkophiles!
Part of a massive government-sponsored writing project to help put the nation's writers back to work during the Great Depression, the WPA Guide to New York City takes the reader back to the New York City of the 1930's, neighborhood by neighborhood, block by block, building by building. You can almost taste the blintzes on the Lower East Side and the aroz con pollo in Spanish Harlem. This remarkable book about our nation's most remarkable city is as close to time travel as you can get--and what a trip!

The Best Guide to New York Past
This is the third copy of this book I've bought over the years; I gave the other two to New Yorkers.

Like the rest of this long series of guides to U.S. destinations, it was written under the Roosevelt-era W.P.A. by an array of higly talented, highly unemployed writers.

If you love the City, or even are curious as to What Went Wrong, this particular guide is a great work.Wonderful Black and White photos, and fine writing.

WPA Guide to New York City
This is a very good guide to New York City at the time it was originally written (1939).I must, however, rate it at only three stars for the following reason:

I've seen the original in libraries, and said original contained, inside the back cover, a pocket with a detailed street map of New York City, and this map was NOT included in this reprint.From my own standpoint as a cartographer, this is inexcusable.

Great reading
This well written guide had intersting facts about this - the greatest city in the world. The majority of the buildings described are still standing.The descriptions of the city in 1939 are facinating to read. Well worth reading if you are planning to visit 21st century New York and a must for any New Yorker

Families are flocking to New York City. And the kids are helping in planning the vacation. Some 65 percent of the shoppers at the Times Square Toys "R" Us are out-of-towners, according to a company spokesman. Some visitors even make the giant toy store their first stop. Judging by the crowds of out-of-town visitors snapping photographs at the Ferris wheel and Lego Empire State Building located inside the store, it's clear that families love New York.

"We felt like it was our patriotic duty to come," said Bona Christison, who was chaperoning a group of teens from a University of Utah youth theater group.

Kids love what they have always loved about New York: "Looking at all the different people," says 14-year-old Cassie Crockett, part of the theater group from Utah.

nice guide to Manhattan
We recently visited Manhattan and used this book (among others).It was well written and informative.It covered highlights rather than being comprehensive, but we did get good information.Chapters cover: NYC's neighborhoods, Times Square, must-see sights, museums, parks and zoos, cultural venues, sports, Ellis Island, Ground Zero, eating and shopping.Easy to read print and boldface information make the guide easy to use, and tips often include web addresses, which was handy.Nice guide.

A FUN BOOK WITH GREAT IDEAS
Whether you want to go to a Yankees game in the summer or skate at Rockefeller Center in the winter, you'll find great leads in this portable book. New York City can be overwhelming, but this guidebook is accessible, handy, inspiring, and fun. There's even room for your kids to write down their impressions.
