Product Description
The love of colour is so strong in the Islands that it is transplanted to wherever Pacific people live. However, beneath the colourful costumes, flowers and other embellishments are deeply significant traditional ceremonies which remain an integral part of the cultural luggage that Island peoples brought with them on their journey to New Zealand. These include religious observances, songs, dances and traditional rites of passage. Feasts and Festivals is a splendid photographic showcase for some of these vibrant South Pacific festivities, many of which have become a part of New Zealand's urban life, particularly in Auckland, now truly the world's largest Polynesian city. ... Product Description
In this book, the authors explore the notion that New Zealand is a `gendered culture', a culture in which the structures of masculinity and femininity are central to the formation of society as a whole. However, they argue that the oppression of women should not be seen as the most fundamental dynamic of society; and that the gendered culture should be challenged because it enables the hierarchies of sex, race, and class to be maintained. This new edition contains totally up-to-date statistics, and analyses the impacts of New Zealand's shift to a more market-driven society on the gendered society. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book in a subject with little coverage.
Persimmon Culture in New Zealand is pretty good coverage of the subject. Some of the stuff is New Zealand specific, and not applicable to the USA, but most is useful and accurate. At only about 70 pages, it's too short, but it's also about the only book out on the subject. Of course, it hasnothing to do with Sociology, Amazon has it mis-filed. ... Read more

It posts daily local and international news stories, monitors fundamentalist Christian politics in New Zealand and associated anti-gay pressure groups, reports on political developments related to LGBT New Zealanders, discusses current issues related to HIV/AIDS, holds regular polls on topical LGBT issues, and has previews and reviews of music, theatre, film, television and literature. GayNZ.com has featured a variety of articles profiling a diverse range of LGBT New Zealanders, including Members of Parliament, people with disabilities, drag queens, Kiwis of various ethnic backgrounds, and local celebrities. The website also features a selection of blogs, a forum, a national LGBT event guide and a personals section. New Zealanders are generally accepting of gays and lesbians, although low level homophobia (such as the use of the word 'gay' as an insult) is still common. The gay social scene in New Zealand is small by international standards, especially outside Auckland. However, many smaller centres have LGBT organisations and social networks that cater to their community. The internet is heavily used by gay men in New Zealand to meet others, especially in areas which lack specifically gay venues. GayNZ.com is the most popular website and is used as a source of information and current affairs for New Zealand's LGBT population to connect with each other and learn about community issues. Product Description
In a land caught between the sea and cloud, where the natural landscape still refuses civilization, there are those; the composers of words, tellers of tales, that help shape the minds of the people that live on its shores. They are spiritcarvers.
New Zealand writing today is engaging in an intent struggle to subvert multiple shapes into voices. These interviews, as a record of biographical orature, are shaped into presenting the figure of the storyteller through memory and language; explorations of how we imagine and create ourselves with and into words. Here we encounter the dichotomy of fiction and non-fiction, myth and consensual reality, imagination and truth: do we live within our own selected fictions? Identity is shaped by the authors' sense of displacement as well as of belonging - meeting otherness with dispossession, discovering connection through isolation.
Among the focal points of the interviews are the role of women's writing, Maori writing, interrelations among different cultures, and the influence of literary and oral tradition within New Zealand.

Product Description
Adventure tourism is a rapidly growing area in thetourism industry. New Zealand, particularlyQueenstown, is portrayed as the ?adventure capitalof the world'. Much of the adventure tourismresearch has emphasised conceptual frameworks andactivity types, with minimal investigation of socio- cultural understandings. Guided by the ideas ofsociologist, Pierre Bourdieu, this book focuses onthe evolving social understandings of New Zealand'sadventure culture. The research interrogates thepractices and narratives of 12 socially legitimisedadventurers. They range from 1953's Mt. Everest hero, Sir Edmund Hillary to adventure tourism innovator,Bungy Jumping A. J. Hackett. These 12 adventurerswith distinction represent the contested adventuresocial space, ranging from excitement thrill tosurvival epic. It is argued the available, inclusive, and socially legitimised Bungy Jumpexperience has transformed understandings. Thetransformation highlighting mythologized socialmisrepresentations of misadventure, exclusivity, andthe extraordinary. Importantly the book appliesBourdieu's holistic individual/socialconceptualisation to the adventure phenomena. ... Read more

Excerpt: Peter Hugh McGregor Ellis (born March 30, 1958) is a former Christchurch child care worker who has been at the centre of one of New Zealand's most enduring judicial controversies. In June 1993 Ellis was found guilty on 16 counts of sexual offences involving children in his care at the Christchurch Civic Creche and was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. This outcome has been strongly criticised, with concerns centering around how the children's testimony was obtained and presented to the jury. Ellis has always maintained his innocence and many New Zealanders have supported calls to overturn his convictions. The case has been subject to a High Court trial, two Court of Appeal hearings, and a Ministerial Inquiry. There have also been two parliamentary petitions, two books and numerous articles about the case. El...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4862102 ... Read more
