Excerpt:New Zealand The Attorney-General is a political office in New Zealand . It is simultaneously a ministerial position and an administrative office, and has responsibility for supervising New Zealand law and advising the government on legal matters. Responsibilities and powers The Attorney-General has two main areas of official responsibility. Firstly, the Attorney-General has ministerial jurisdiction over the Crown Law Office , the Parliamentary Counsel Office , and the Serious Fraud Office . Secondly, the Attorney-General is the principal law officer of the Crown, responsible for supervising the state's administration of the law and for providing legal advice to the government. In the latter role (but strictly not in the former), the Attorney-General is assisted by the Solicitor-General , a non-partisan official. This is to reduce the extent to which the Attorney-General's actions on behalf of the state (as opposed to the government) can be influenced by their political allegiance. A more complete description of the Attorney-General's powers can be found in the 2004 ministerial briefing prepared by the Crown Law Office, which the Attorney-General supervises. The position of Attorney-General is distinct from that of Minister of Justice , although the two posts are sometimes held by the same person, eg Martyn Finlay 1972-75. At present, there is ... ... Excerpt: This article is part of the series:Politics and government ofNew Zealand Territorial authorities are the second tier of local government in New Zealand, below regional councils. There are 73 territorial authorities: 16 city councils, 56 district councils, and the Chatham Islands Council. Five territorial authorities (Nelson City Council, Gisborne, Tasman, and Marlborough District Councils and the Chatham Islands Council) also perform the functions of a regional council and thus are known as unitary authorities. Territorial authority districts are not subdivisions of regions, and some of them fall within more than one region. Taupo District has the distinction of straddling the boundaries of four different regions (see below). Chapters: Political Status of Puerto Rico, Electoral Reform in New Zealand, Russian Government Referendum, 1993, Danish Maastricht Treaty Referendum, 1993, Russian Constitutional Referendum, 1993, Malawian Democracy Referendum, 1993. Excerpt:The Danish Maastricht Treaty referendum of 1993 was a referendum on whether Denmark should ratify the Maastricht Treaty which had already been rejected by the Danish people in a 1992 referendum. The referendum took place on May 18, 1993, with 56.7 % voting for the ratification and 43.3 % voting against, from an 86.5 % voter turnout. It was the second attempt to ratify the Maastricht Treaty, which could not come into effect unless ratified by all members of the European Union . Thus, the Edinburgh Agreement granted Denmark four exceptions from the Maastricht Treaty, leading to its eventual ratification. Riots When the result of the referendum was announced, the outcome and frustrations about the referendum being held only a year after the Danes had rejected the previous treaty led to riots in the Nørrebro area of Copenhagen , during which the police fired 113 shots into a crowd when it was trapped. 11 people were subsequently treated for gunshot wounds. Notes A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at New Zealand Electoral reform in New Zealand has, in recent years, become a political issue as major changes have been made to both Parliamentary and local government electoral systems . Parliamentary Electoral Reform All New Zealand elections from 1914 to 1996 consistently used the British system of 'first past the post ' (FPP) for parliamentary elections (bloc voting and runoff voting were also used in some elections before 1914). This system had consistently favoured the two largest partie... ... Read more
