From the author: This paper challenges the view that agricultural intensification is a threat to soil fertility in Africa. On the Jos Plateau, intensification has continued since the 1970s despite low levels of soil fertility and crop production. This intensification has locally enhanced soil fertility despite shortages of inorganic fertilizer, cash and labour. At least, soil fertility has been sustained through indigenous knowledge off mixing ash, organic and inorganic fertilizers; careful soil conditioning; substitution of ash and organic fertilizer; switching to less demanding crops and crop rotation; cultivation of legumes and careful spacing of crops; more effective use of inorganic fertilizers; and generating more cash to buy fertilizer. Use of this knowledge was apparently encouraged by economic and population pressures. A broader, relative concept of soil fertility is called for, as are recognition of the farmers' viewpoint and cultural variation in soil fertility management. Given appropriate incentives and marketing opportunities, it is hypothesized that resource-poor farmers elsewhwere in Africa will also apply their knowledge toward maximizing the fertility of their soils rather than mining them.

From the author: The progress of a new barley outgrower scheme on the Jos Plateau, Nigeria, is examined in the context of recently expressed concerns about the expansion of contract farming in Africa. The scheme was established by Jos International Breweries (JIB) to produce barley for brewing after importation of the cereal was banned in 1988. Having confirmed the technical feasibility of producing barley locally with irrigation, JIB began the scheme with 207 contract farmers in 1989. Of these 146 produced a crop. The average yield was low (0.85 t/ha) owing to various problems including religious objections, diversion of fertilizer and inappropriate crop management. In 1990 these problems were tackled and 168 farmers participated. Other problems, including early rains, high temperatures and insect infestations resulted in an even lower average yield (0.72 t/ha). During the 1991/2 and 1992/3 seasons, because of shortage of funds, the scheme was reduced to 19 farmers who grew barley merely to maintain seed stocks. The average yield rose with better growing conditions and improved crop management. Despite the numerous and complex problems affecting the scheme, benefits were evident on both sides. Time will show whether these outweigh the respective costs. In the early stage examined here, the interests of JIB and the farmers were apparently well balanced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Life in Nigeria
The photographs were colorful and the text full of useful information but how can the author talk about city life without including photographs of hotels, highways, restaurants, cafes and all the trimmings of modern city life. I was surprised, especially since this book was printed in the year 2000. Also in the section about "Variety of Homes" why did the author fail to have pictures of the grand homes in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, homes that are a great testimony to Nigerian architecture? I am tired of people coming up to me and asking me what life is like in Nigeria and whether I live in a hut? It is no wonder they have this view when books like this continue to only depict the poor, deprived lifestyle of Africa (village life) failing to take note of the leaps and bounds we have made towards modernity. ... Product Description

Plagued by ethnic divisions, economic inequality, and corruption, Nigeria appears to conform to the stereotypical view that Africa's problems are mostly the result of primitive tribalism. But as Nigeria's Diverse Peoples demonstrates, most of Nigeria's problems today were set in motion by Europeans during the slave trade and colonial eras.

Focusing on three main ethnic groups (Hausa-Falani, Yoruba, and Igbo) and ranging from precolonial times to independence in 1960 to the present, this breakthrough study portrays a Nigeria now striving to make a unified nation of itself. Offering a fresh understanding not just of Nigeria but of Africa as well, readers will enter the richly complex world of Nigeria's ethnic history.
