Excerpt: Pullen Park is a 72 acres (29.1 ha) public park in Raleigh, North Carolina west of downtown, adjacent to the campus of North Carolina State University, between Western Boulevard and Hillsborough Street. The park features picnic areas, a concessions stand along with several small rides including the Pullen Park Carousel, train, and kiddie boats. Pedal boats are also available for rent seasonally on the park's large pond. The Pullen Aquatic Center, Pullen Arts Center and Theatre In the Park are also located on the park grounds. It is one of the most famous and known parks around the Raleigh/Durham area. paddle boats A view from the lake Pullen Park was founded on March 22, 1887 when Richard Stanhope Pullen donated farmland to the City of Raleigh expressly to be used as a space for recreational enjoyment of citizens and visitors to Raleigh, NC. This land became Pullen Park, the first public park in North Carolina, although its founder, always shying from thanks and publicity, opposed giving it his name. A "Committee on Public Parks" was formed to oversee the transformation from farm land to landscaped park and a Park Keeper was hired in 1888 to oversee these modifications. Pullen continued his own involvement by taking part in the planning and financing of bridges, roads and paths throughout the park as well as the planting of trees and general landscaping in the park and the neighboring university (NCSU) which was built on land also donated by him. Pullen's landscape architecture design was in keeping with the times. He also financed a round pavil...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2608725 ... Read more

Polk birthplace on outskirts of Charlotte, North Carolina The current land of Mecklenburg County has a long and storied history that involves being located in five different counties since 1696 or over 300 years of existence. Retracing the exact beginning of Mecklenburg goes back to its inclusion as a part of Bath County (16961729) of New Hanover Precinct of The House Of Hanover royalty in England. Bath County became New Hanover County (1729present) that split into Bladen County (1734present) and then Anson County (1750present). Excerpt: Guilford Courthouse National Military Park -Signers Monument at Guilford Courthouse National Military ParkIn 1886, David Schenck conceived the idea of making the Guilford Courthouse site a park. The following year, he chartered the non-profit Guilford Battle Ground Company to advance his efforts. From an early date, he apparently foresaw a turnover to the federal government, and when Congress finally established Guilford Courthouse as a national military park, the GBGC turned over its 125 acres (0.51 km) at no charge. However, the GBGC period would leave a mixed legacy. First, Schenck's philosophy was not to preserve the terrain in its approximate historical state, but to beautify the landscape. Contrasting National Park Service maps reflect the changing official historiography of the battle. This 1998 map still adheres to the interpretation inherited from Schenck. A current map shows a larger battlefield. In particular, the American third line has been moved back, and the last shots of the battle have been placed further south, in Greensboro Country Park.Second, he adopted an interpretation of the battle that encompassed a much smaller area than that indicated by contemporary accounts. It is believed that his limited funds, coupled with landowners who exploited his interest by charging top dollar, influenced his historical downsizing. This has misled historians, and caused markers and monuments to be placed in the wrong spot. It also hampered efforts to acquire land or resist...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2569170 ... Read more
