Frankfurt School socio-political interpretation at its best
Gran presents an insightful and solid theoretical approach to the state in the modernization process.Whether he knows it or not, he adds to the sparse field of theoretical history in a way which is both compelling and demanding of the subject matter and available social, political, and economic research resources.

While this book may not be accessible to the average reader, or even one with an earnest desire to know more about either Norway or the development of states in the modern era, Gran has presented for those with an understanding of the Frankfurt School and neo-Marxist theory an exemplary model for understanding the nature of the bourgeois-capitalist political-economic institutions which present themselves as 'democratic.' ...
