Product Description
There are many excellent nuclear chemistry textbooks available for teaching science or engineering seniors or graduate students, but very few for those lacking a more extensive science and math background. And many of them are slipping out of date. Clearly, a more appropriate text is necessary. Introduction to Nuclear Science provides a much-needed textbook for those seeking a more accessible introduction to the topic.

Simple in its concept but elegant in its execution, the book provides a complete introduction to nuclear chemistry and physics, including fundamental concepts, relevant mathematics, current applications, and health issues. The author covers energetics, radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, interactions of radiation with matter, detection methods, and safety measures, including monitoring and regulations. The text also includes material relevant to medical professionals generating and using ionizing radiation for diagnostics and therapy. It provides a balanced view of important contemporary topics such as nuclear power, weapons, and food/mail irradiation.

The text is classroom tested and the author assumes his audience has a limited science and math background that includes some knowledge of algebra and general chemistry. The book not only helps educators teaching nuclear science to undergraduates without a calculus prerequisite, but fills the coming need to educate a new generation of workers in the nuclear industry. The text is also useful to scientists making a career move to the growing nuclear industry.

This volume works well in conjunction with other CRC lab manuals. Check out Experiments in Nuclear Science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory textbook for a complex subject
"Introduction to Nuclear Science" is a short textbook that touches on numerous topics in nuclear science, including radioactive decay, nuclear structure, energy in nuclear decays, interaction of ionizing radiation with matter (including shielding), nuclear reactions, reactors, and weaponry, and radiation in medicine and food technology. Each of these topics is treated in a relatively simple way. For example, the author doesn't get into detail about neutrinos in beta decay, just mentioning that they're there and that they preserve conservation laws. The book is written in a very accessible, conversational style. A physicist would be aghast at the shallow level of the book.
However, this is till a great book for what it is intended to be. What one must understand about this book is the target audience. This book is aimed at students who are not physics majors. The author's introduction implies that he intended the book as a simple introduction to nuclear science for undergraduate students headed for med school. There is not a single integral sign to be found in the book. I think that it would probably even be good in an advanced high school physics class. You can certainly find many textbooks that deal with each topic in this book in much more detail, but I haven't seen another introductory book to this occasionally difficult and often misunderstood topic that comes close in terms of clarity and accessibility. ... Product Description
The serendipitous discovery of the fullerenes by Kroto, Curland Smalley in 1985, and the isolation and characterization ofC60 by Krätschmer and Huffman in 1990 has caused anepidemic of research in this field. As a result, basic research onfullerenes has generated new knowledge as published in thousands ofjournal papers. The nuclear and radiation approaches, however, havebeen somewhat neglected in books dedicated to fullerene sciences, although these approaches have generated very interesting knowledge onthe structure and composition of these new all-carbon molecules. Thismonograph intends to bridge this gap by dealing with the variousaspects of nuclear sciences as applied to the generation of newknowledge in fullerene sciences.
Ten chapters appear in this volume and were chosen to present apanoramic view and to provide theoretical perspectives, researchmethods, and experimental results on the topic. This book will serveboth as an introduction to the subfield and as an aid to setting anagenda for scientists interested in this area of research.
This is the first volume in a new series devoted to the developmentsin fullerene science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear and Radiation Chemical Approaches to Fullerene Scien
In his preface to this contributed volume Sir Harold
Kroto recalls that from the first moment of its discovery
C60 initiated thoughts about encapsulation of atoms,
including radionuclides for medical applications.
The new monograph now bridges a gap in the literature
and treats various aspects of nuclear sciences as applied
to fullerenes. The research progress is surveyed in ten
chapters grouped into four thematic parts.

The first block consisted of four chapters and
deals with fullerenes in solid state. It is opened
by a short survey from C. S. Sundar on positron
annihilation spectroscopy and its application
to electronic structure, defect properties and
phase transitions of fullerene solids. E. J.
Ansaldo then discusses muon spectroscopy of
pure and doped fullerenes. A comprehensive
chapter by Z. Klencsar and A. Vertes
shows the potential of Moessbauer spectroscopy
for studies of certain types of fullerene
organometallic compounds. The last chapter of the
block is from H. Nakahara and K. Sueki and deals
with applications of radiotracers and nuclear
decay phenomena to metallofullerenes. The chapter
points out high sensitivity and extremely low
detection limits of the measurements.

Radiation chemistry of fullerenes and their
derivatives in solution is surveyed in the fifth
chapter written by K.-D. Asmus and D. M. Guldi.
The chapter treats redox processes and radical
addition reactions of pristine fullerenes,
fullerenes in heterogeneous guest-host complexes,
and functionalized fullerenes.

The third thematic block covers various aspects
of the composition of fullerenes and endohedral
fullerenes. G. E. Gadd discusses formation of
rare-gas endohedral radiofullerenes as a result
of nuclear recoil that follows nuclear reactions.
The topic has developed from pioneering neutron
activation studies by Braun and Rausch producing
an endohedral radionuclide. T. Ohtsuki and K. Ohno
also deal with nuclear recoil and survey their
experiments and related computations on endohedral
fullerenes and heterofullerenes. In the following
chapter, K. Masumoto et al. report the
production of radioisotope labelled fullerenes
as means to trace chemical and physiological
behavior. This part ends with a short chapter by
G. J. Ehrhardt and L. J. Wilson on the promising field
of fullerene-based diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals.

The volume is closed by a chapter on elemental
impurities and effects of neutron irradiation
on fullerenes written by T. Braun and H. Rausch.
The presence of elemental impurities is indeed
a matter of concern in both production of fullerenes
and their possible applications.

This valuable book presents a wide, panoramic view
of nuclear and radiation-chemical treatments of
fullerenes. The book in fact comes as the first
volume in a new series of monographs devoted to the
developments in fullerene science.
