Product Description
The Institution of Nuclear Engineers symposium on 'ALARA': Quantitative Optimization Techniques for Radiation Protection in the Nuclear Industry was held in London on 18 September 1986, and was attended by over 130 delegates from all branches of the nuclear industry. The process of quantitative optimization of radiation protection affects the design, construction and operation of nuclear installations, and is essential to all those who have to deal with the consequences to the public of radioactive emission from nuclear power facilities. The concept of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) has been developed in line with the International Commission on Radiation Protection recommendations on dose limitation. Its aim is to provide a realistic balance between the desire to keep radiation exposure to a minimum and the economic and social factors relevant to decisions on health and safety in the nuclear industry. This book contains the eight invited papers presented at the symposium, together with summaries of the discussions that took place after each of the four sessions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars falls short of expectation
I'm glad this book exists because there are not others like it, but I cannot give it an enthusiastic recommendation. I'm going to study nuclear engineering and I wanted to read the history of the nuclear industry. Kupp tells you a lot about the history, but it is sandwiched between the rest of Kupp's life story. If you want to read Robert William Kupp's autobiography, here it is. If you want a history of the development of nuclear power in America, read the middle third only. (If someone knows a better book, please let me know!)

One last thing: This book is chock full of typos and plain bad English. It is also chopped up into little vignettes. It's not smooth reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Richard Altschuler & Associates, Inc./ Gordian Knot Books

On the Cutting Edge presents a series of true stories providing the first account of many of the major programs and projects that have made the last sixty years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky’s account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space.

Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the use of the atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s that are just now coming to fruition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of a (sort of) secret time in America's history.
Informative, with a healthy dash of humor. This is no dry, historical recounting. And, of course, it's educational to be allowed behind the scientific communities' curtain...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale Well Told
Very interesting and entertaining set of career experiences as told by one of the greatest engineer's ever. Probably not for everyone, but anyone who has been a part of the Aerospace industry would enjoy the telling of Dr. Bob's career. Well writen, articulate and informative. I purchased four more copies for gifts to young engineers that might write something similar in 50 or so years.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities
Written by engineer, educator, and arms race/spacecraft design pioneer Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Ages is a collection of true tales of the author's professional experiences. Active in the atomic and space race from 1950 to 1988, and not really retired up to even the present day, Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars a notable pioneer
The book is a collection of anecdotes and snippets from Brodsky's long professional life, commencing during World War 2 and proceeding past the end of the Cold War. He gives an insider's look at what it was like to work in the American defense industry. Notably the aerospace milieu of southern California. But also in the nuclear weapons program at Sandia, New Mexico. Having worked briefly at Los Alamos, but decades after he was at Sandia, his accounts brought back fond memories of New Mexico.

He was also involved in some of the earlier postwar uses of computers. Like programming ENIAC for the first Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. A total dinosaur of a machine by current standards. But truly cutting edge at the time.

There is a brief mention of wind tunnel tests he did in Pasadena, Los Angeles. How times change. That wind tunnel building is now the south campus of the Arts Center College of Design. I was there recently for a reception. Few of the current students appreciate the history of that building, and its crucial contributions to the US war effort during World War 2, and later in the Cold War. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is dedicated to the basic training of students of engineering in the field of physical metallurgy. One of the most serious problems confronting the engineer is the selection, treatment, and use of metals and alloys. These problems cannot be left entirely left entirely to the specialist known as the metallurgist, but must be dealt with to an appreciable extent by the engineer. No engineering project is without its problem of a material to do the job. To cope with this situation the engineer must have a basic understanding of the science and art of metallurgy as it is related to his interest. The authors have intended that this book should meet this need. While the purpose of this book in its second edition remains the same as in the first edition, there is a tendency to shift the emphasis to even more fundamental view. An even greater emphasis has been given to the fundamentals by adding three new chapters, namely, The Structure of Matter, Physical Properties, and Mechanical Properties. ... Read more

Product Description
As a young engineer in West Germany in the 1970s, Manfred Förtsch was part of a team that built a nuclear power plant. This is his story of how the Project became a battleground and test-case, pitting some of his country's best scientific minds against the rising power of the Green Party. He describes how the initial approval of this project was overturned, as a result of opposition mounted by the Greens in collusion with the media. The author's personal conviction and identification with his engineering assignment are shown to be in opposition to the growing rejection of nuclear energy by the general public. The power of partisan media campaigns effectively isolates his profession and becomes a manipulating force that encroaches on his personal life. Through foreign assignments, the author learns to appreciate other cultures. The warmth and friendship of people he comes into contact with in South Africa and Polynesia opens up a fresh perspective on life, imbuing him with new sense of purpose. This engaging book describes a personal journey from old world to new, from high-tech to low-tech. It is an honest and forthright account of a career in one of the world's most controversial industries.
