Product Description
While traditional engineering still drives this profession, advancing needs and technologies have increased the demand for more focused specialization within this discipline. There are basics to any phase of engineering and many specialties are pursued as part of the traditional engineering education. Some are now professions in their own right with curricula and degree programs to underscore their importance.

Engineering specialties are really a product of the 20th century. One has only to look at the start of the century to realize how very far we have come in just one hundred years. From the horse and buggy to high-powered automobiles. From the experimental flight of the Kitty Hawk to successfully landing a spacecraft on Mars complete with pictures, from communications by telegraph, to worldwide communications in a nanosecond. From health epidemics in a population of less than 90 million with a life expectancy of under 50 years of age, to health prevention for a population of more than 260 million with a life expectancy of more than 75 years of age. There is no doubt that engineering has had a big hand in moving the country and the world forward. Engineering wonders from bridges that can span miles over waterways to nuclear-powered submarines that can stay submerged for months at a time attest to the vast and varied contributions of the engineering professionals during this century. This series takes a look at some of the better known specialties that have good job growth potential for the 21st century.

Engineering salaries are also on the rise. Engineers have always been among the best paid professionals of any field. And the news for today's graduates continues to be positive. In a recent national survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, entry-level salaries for engineers with at least a bachelor's degree were the highest for all professions covered in the survey. College recruiters estimate that the explosion of new technology and the professionals who understand it and can work with it, will continue to fuel the job market and make engineering a very attractive profession for the new millennium.

We are all familiar with the traditional careers in engineering such as mechanical, civil, chemical, mining, metallurgical and petroleum. There are also modern engineering careers such as aerospace, aeronautical, environmental and computer, which have come about just in this century. Within this illustrious profession, there are now more than 25 engineering specialties to consider. Some specialties are still part of the classic engineering programs while others are expanding to stand on their own. The process will continue to evolve as the demand for engineering specialists continues to grow. The specialties that are covered in this series are considered by many experts in the profession to be leading the field going into the 21st century.

This new Careers Ebook contains a wealth of unbiased information about an occupational field, based on the latest national surveys. Careers Ebooks cover attractive and unattractive sides, opportunities, education necessary, personal qualifications required, earnings, descriptions of different job specialties, first person accounts by those in the field, and how to get started; including practical advice on what to do now. There are live links to schools and colleges, associations, periodicals and other sources of reliable information. ... Read more

From the supplier: America's nuclear weapons engineers were very proud of the work that they did at national laboratories throughout the Cold War. Congressional budget cuts in the 1990s are ending the careers of many of these people and their futures are ambiguous.

Excerpt: Friedrich Tinner (Born 1937) is a Swiss nuclear engineer and a long-associated friend of Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, connected with the Khan network trafficking in the proliferation of nuclear materials and know-how to Pakistan, Iran, Libya, and North Korea. He is also a former researcher of the Kahuta Research Laboratories, where he worked there as a chief nuclear research scientist under the supervision of Dr. A. Q. Khan. He has been connected in particular with gas centrifuges used for isotopic enrichment of uranium. Friedrich Tinner was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1937. He received his early and intermediate education from there. During 1960, Tinner went to Belgium where he attended Katholieke Universiteit Leuven majoring in nuclear engineering. According to the intelligence reports, it was Tinner's college life when Tinner met with a metallurgical engineer, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan and became a good friend of his. Friedrich Tinner and Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan have studied together at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. They continued their close association even when Tinner worked for International Atomic Energy Agency have kept his close contact with Dr. A. Q. Khan. There are many controversial media and intelligence reports that Friedrich Tinner and his sons Urs and Marco Tinner, have lived in Pakistan for a long time, where they have worked for Khan Labs as research nuclear scientist under the supervision of Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan. According to the New York Times, Tinner had a long and close relationship with Dr. Khan.
