A cause du secret de l'apresguerre et des buts nationaux tres nets, l'industrie nucleaire fut modelee uniquement par le contexte canadien. Le Canada, dans son exploration de l'energie nucleaire et dans son abstention d'en considerer les usages militaires, faisait cavalier seul parmi les puissances d'apres-guerre; la profession s'instaura a l'interieur d'un monopole gouvernemental; le contenu intellectuel de la discipline fut influence par ses premiers praticiens et administrateurs, par la pauvrete des ressources et aussi par les creneaux universitaires; et finalement, une profession consciente d'elle-meme se fonda plus tard que ses homologues americains ou britanniques. Dans cet article, nous soutenons que l'histoire de la naissance de l'ingenierie nucleaire canadienne illustre le modelage exceptionnellement marque de l'expertise technique par le contexte politique et culturel.

While traditional engineering still drives this profession, advancing needs and technologies have increased the demand for more focused specialization within this discipline. There are basics to any phase of engineering and many specialties are pursued as part of the traditional engineering education. Some are now professions in their own right with curricula and degree programs to underscore their importance.

Engineering specialties are really a product of the 20th century. One has only to look at the start of the century to realize how very far we have come in just one hundred years. From the horse and buggy to high-powered automobiles. From the experimental flight of the Kitty Hawk to successfully landing a spacecraft on Mars complete with pictures, from communications by telegraph, to worldwide communications in a nanosecond.From health epidemics in a population of less than 90 million with a life expectancy of under 50 years of age, to health prevention for a population of more than 260 million with a life expectancy of more than 75 years of age. There is no doubt that engineering has had a big hand in moving the country and the world forward. Engineering wonders from bridges that can span miles over waterways to nuclear-powered submarines that can stay submerged for months at a time attest to the vast and varied contributions of the engineering professionals during this century. This series takes a look at some of the better known specialties that have good job growth potential for the 21st century.

Engineering salaries are also on the rise. Engineers have always been among the best paid professionals of any field. And the news for today's graduates continues to be positive. In a recent national survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, entry-level salaries for engineers with at least a bachelor's degree were the highest for all professions covered in the survey. College recruiters estimate that the explosion of new technology and the professionals who understand it and can work with it, will continue to fuel the job market and make engineering a very attractive profession for the new millennium.

We are all familiar with the traditional careers in engineering such as mechanical, civil, chemical, mining, metallurgical and petroleum. There are also modern engineering careers such as aerospace, aeronautical, environmental and computer, which have come about just in this century. Within this illustrious profession, there are now more than 25 engineering specialties to consider. Some specialties are still part of the classic engineering programs while others are expanding to stand on their own. The process will continue to evolve as the demand for engineering specialists continues to grow. The specialties that are covered in this series are considered by many experts in the profession to be leading the field going into the 21st century.
