    Extractions: Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) is "a user-friendly, web-based provider of global geo-referenced information on accurately identified marine species" developed by the international research program Census of Marine Life. OBIS can be used to integrate information from a host of stand-alone databases including biological, physical, and chemical oceanographic data on a selected species and geographic range of interest. A couple of the sections are still under construction, but this does not affect the ability to use the database. This Web site may provide an important source of accurate information for scientists researching a particular species or location. This site is also reviewed in the July 26, 2002 Scout Report [AL] A collaborative effort between the National Science Foundation (NSF), the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the Plant Genome Research Program has resulted in this online resource for sharing plant genome information. The way it works is, most bacteria (and living things in general) eat food derived from photosynthetic plants. But there are some bacteria that can use certain minerals (mainly sulfur compounds) as their energy source. In the deep sea there are volcanic vents that give off sulfur-containing compounds from deep within the earth. After bacteria start to grow around the vents, then other life forms arrive to eat the bacteria. Because of the tremendous pressure and almost complete lack of organic materials in the deep sea, the ways in which these organisms function is quite far off the beaten path! There have been quite a few articles on these in the biologic and general literature in the last few years. One of the scientists involved is Robert Ballard. Thanks for the question!

They travel as much as 900 miles upriver and climb to elevations of 6,500 feet to reach natal spawning grounds. Snake River chinook and sockeye salmon share the same general life cycle. Eggs are deposited and fertilized by spawning adults in gravel "nests" (called redds) in the summer and fall. After the eggs hatch in the redds, the juvenile salmon use the stream or lake they were born in as a nursery area. Sockeye salmon live in nursery areas in Redfish Lake in Idaho for one to three years before migrating seaward. Spring/summer chinook live in nursery areas in small streams for one year but fall chinook live in nursery areas in larger streams for only a few months. Sockeye and spring/summer chinook smolts leave their nursery areas and start migrating to the ocean in the spring. Fall chinook salmon leave their nursery areas and start migrating to the ocean early in the summer. In the Pacific Ocean, Snake River salmon range from northern California to the Gulf of Alaska where they grow to maturity. Snake River salmon usually spend two to four years in the ocean before they return to freshwater. Snake River sockeye salmon enter the Columbia River in June and July and return to Idaho's Redfish Lake to spawn. Spring/summer chinook salmon enter the Columbia River from March through July and return to their natal streams to spawn. The spring/summer chinook that migrate early in the year tend to spawn in the upstream reaches of the Snake River's tributary streams, while those arriving later spawn in the river's lower reaches. Fall chinook salmon enter the Columbia River from August through October and return to the mainstem Snake River and lower reaches of major tributary streams to spawn.

The Antarctic Convergence acts as an effective biological barrier, and the Southern Ocean is therefore substantially a closed ecosystem. The Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources came into force in 1982, as part of the Antarctic Treaty System, in pursuance of the provisions of Article IX of the Treaty. It was established mainly in response to concerns that an increase in krill catches in the Southern Ocean could have a serious effect on populations of krill and other marine life; particularly on birds, seals and fish, which mainly depend on krill for food. The aim of the Convention is to conserve marine life of the Southern Ocean. However this does not exclude harvesting carried out in a rational manner.     Extractions: Life Saving Organized international lifesaving activities date back to 1878, when the first World Congress was hosted in Marseille, France. A need for an international forum to exchange ideas was soon recognized. This led firstly to the establishment of the F©d©ration Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique (FIS) in 1910 and then to the formation of World Life Saving (WLS). Both organizations were established to promote lifesaving throughout the world. While FIS was focused on stillwater, WLS was more focused on ocean lifesaving. Lifesaving sport was primarily intended to encourage lifesavers to develop, maintain and improve the essential physical and mental skills needed to save lives in the aquatic environment. On February 24, 1993, in Leuven, Belgium, FIS and WLS were merged into a single, worldwide lifesaving organization known as the International Life Saving Federation (ILS). ILS was officially constituted by the ILS General Assembly in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, on September 3, 1994. The international liaisons forged by sport have helped greatly in advancing international exchanges of information on lifesaving practices.
