Nystuen of the Applied Physics Laboratory of the University of Washington has been selected as the recipient of the 2003 Medwin Prize in Acoustical Oceanography from the Acoustical Society of America. He is receiving the Prize for the development and effective use of measurements of underwater sound generated by rain to determine rainfall rate and type at sea. He will receive the Prize and give the Medwin Prize lecture at the spring 2003 ASA meeting in Nashville. The title of the Medwin Prize lecture is "The Sound of Rainfall at Sea." The restoration project, sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, was just another step in a greater project to revitalize an area that had at one time acted as a duct for soil particles and pollutants to enter Spa Creek. And when she discovered proof of the controversial idea that all of the continents were once connected, her thinking about continental drift was dismissed as "girl talk." Time proved her right again and again. Tharp's lifelong ability to break barriers and explain the unexplainable was recognized yesterday when the 80-year-old South Nyack resident was named first recipient of the Lamont-Doherty Heritage Award. The award honors her as a pioneer of oceanography and of women's contributions to the sciences. "Never have I heard so many people say such nice things about me," she said after the hourlong ceremony in a packed auditorium at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. "I'm amazed, simply amazed."
