Edging the United Kingdom by a single point, Canada was awarded the Lonsdale Cup, an impressive silver trophy weighing 340 ounces. More important than the trophy was the significance attached to the gathering itself by a number of the participants, particularly Richard Coombes of Australia, who would spend the rest of his life working to establish an "Empire Sports" gathering. In the years following the Festival of Empire-interrupted only by the heart breaking years of the First World War -sport enthusiasts from all over the Empire worked tirelessly to promote the concept of an Empire meet.
