The borderless flag displays five interlocking rings in the center on a plain white background. Each ring is a different color of blue, black, red, yellow, and green. It is thought these colors were chosen because at least one color can be found in the flag of every nation on the planet. A different ring represents the continents of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe. The Olympic Flag was first used at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. After the games are completed, the mayor of the host city presents the mayor of the future host city the symbolic flag. The item then remains at the town hall of the future host city for four years until the Opening Ceremony of the next Olympic Games. Oath At the beginning of each Olympics, every athlete promises to play fairly and obey all of the Olympic rules. One athlete from the host country takes the oath at the Opening Ceremonies on behalf of all the athletes. The athlete that is chosen holds a corner of the Olympic Flag while repeating the oath. He believed that international competitions between amateur athletes would help promote friendly relationships between people from different countries. Despite strong opposition in 1894 de Coubertin assembled 79 delegates from 12 countries to attend the international congress for the re-establishment of the Olympic Games. It was decided to hold the first modern Olympics in Athens in two years time. The Athens Games of 1896 were a great success. The Olympics had returned to the land of their birth. On April 5th the Games were opened by King George of Greece, in front of a crowd of 60000. The first competition of the Modern Olympics was the first heat of the 100m which was won by Francis Lane (USA), in a time of 12.5 sec. American James Connolly was the first winner when he won the triple jump with a jump of 13.71 metres. Australia's lone representative, Edwin Flack, a 23 year old accountant working in the United Kingdom, became not only our first Olympian but our first winner. Flack won the 800 and 1500 metres track events. He was also competed in the marathon until fatigue forced him to withdraw around the 37 kilometre mark, and in the singles and doubles tennis events, losing in the first round. The original Olympic medals were silver and only awarded to the winner of an event.

Human strength, stamina and speed are no longer the only attributes coveted by Olympic athletes. Today¹s Olympic buzzwords are "Teflon-coated microfiber suits," "infrared cells," and "sound-wave-measuring microphones." This summer, U.S. cyclists will ride $1 million computer-designed "superbikes" that were tested for speed and durability in specially-made wind tunnels. The U.S. sailing team will use a satellite-navigation system to map ocean currents. Marathon runners will have microchips attached to their shoelaces to precisely measure their split times. Technology has clearly become an integral part of the Olympic Games. Since the difference between a gold and silver medal in many events can be a fraction of a second, any edge technology can provide is much coveted by athletes. For example, at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, the difference between the gold and silver medal in sprints was about two-tenths of a second. It seems as if technology is creating a revolution in just about every Olympic sport. Swimmers use new electronic starting blocks that can sense the exact moment a swimmer's feet leave the pad. Using this technology, they can determine if they are taking too long to leave the block, adding milliseconds to their times.

He is also known as the Father of Modern Olympics and deservedly so, for it was his vision that saw the formation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that led to the staging of the first edition of the Modern Games in Athens in 1896. The IOC was established as an independent, international, sovereign organization that was assured of continuity. It had arbitrary powers and was the supreme power in the Olympic Movement. The membership of the IOC has increased from 15 in 1894 to 93 today. However, the IOC was not the sole reason for the revival of the Games. The spirit of the Games was released, so to peak, when excavators and archaeologists unveiled the ruins of Olympia. Since then, efforts were made from 1859 to 1892 to stage the Games but without success. At this point, Coubertin entered the scene and his persistence saw the IOC overcome the several organizational, technical and diplomatic difficulties and stage the first of the Modern Olympics in 1896. Coubertin was also the designer of the Olympic flag: an emblem of five interlaced rings of different colours (symbolizing the five continents) on a white background.
