His accession led to the drive to transform the Sultanate into a progressive modern state using the revenue from the oil first exported in 1967. Oman is now taking stock of the achievements of a period of far-reaching social and economic development. An early priority of this period of development was the establishment of a government capable of administering the development of the country on the economic base provided by oil exports. An ambitious development plan launched by the Government had, by 2001, increased the length of asphalt roads from 10 km to over 9673 km, the number of doctors from 13 to more than 3397 and the number of hospitals from 2 to more than 56. Development within Oman led also to wider international contacts. Many agreements, particularly with other Arab, Islamic and friendly states, have been ratified and the Government of Oman places particular emphasis on co-operation within the Gulf area. Oman joined the Arab League on 29th September 1971, and on 17th October of the same year became the 131st member of the United Nations Organisation. Oman is also a member of the Group of Non-Aligned Nations. Diplomatic relations have been established with many brotherly and friendly countries. Over fifty countries have resident diplomatic representation in the Sultanate.

The capital is Muscat. Oman comprises a coastal plain and an interior region of hills and desert. Dates, limes, nuts, and vegetables are cultivated in the north and livestock are raised in the southwest, but the major product is oil. Natural gas production and copper mining were developed in the early 1980s to diversify the economy. The population is predominantly Muslim Arab, with Pakistani, Indian, and Zanzibari minorities. History In 1970, Sultan Said ibn Timer was deposed by his son, Qabus bin Said, who promised to use oil revenues for modernization. Rebel activity continued, however, particularly in Dhofar, in the south, where a Chinese-aided liberation front was strong. Oman joined the United Nations and the Arab League in 1971, but it did not become part of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

As much as 3,000 tons of the aromatic gum were exported each year from the ports of Oman to Greece, Rome and the Mediterranean world. Five hundred years later the Omanis were among the first people on the Arabian peninsula to embrace Islam, while Omani sailors ventured to India, Africa and many points in between. After expelling the Portuguese in 1650, Oman went on to command its own maritime empire with outposts along the coasts and islands of the Persian Gulf and East Africa. Despite this proud history, by the 20th century Oman had become a sleepy medieval anachronism. Under the iron hand of Sultan Said ibn Taimur, it was forbidden to build new houses, or to repair the old ones, to install a lavatory or a gas stove, to cultivate new land, or to buy a car without the Sultan's permission. Among the items banned in Taimur's Oman were medicines, radios, music, dancing, glasses, trousers, cigarettes and books; infant deaths and diseases like leprosy and tuberculosis were widespread. Finally Taimur's son (with the help of the British, who had also been instrumental in putting his father on Oman's throne) engineered a bloodless coup in 1970 and took control of the throne. Today Sultan Qabus ibn Said remains in power in a region where petroleum has taken the place of frankincense.

The British Council in association with the Bait Al Zubair Museum in Muscat, the Historical Association of Oman and the University of Liverpool presented an exhibition about Oman's heritage from 16 April - 31 May 2001 and 9-20 February 2002 at the Bait Al Zubair. The exhibition displayed photographs, plans and text, which trace the history of the settlement and its place in Oman's culture. It was created and designed by Dr Soumyen Bandyopadhyay, a member of the School of Architecture and of Building Engineering at Liverpool University. He presented his thesis on Manah for his doctorate and this has since been endorsed by SQU. Invisible Men at the Khareef festival The Invisible Men, a British street theatre company, with a major international reputation played two shows nightly at the Khareef Festival between 18th - 21st July. Children were able to find them at the Children's theatre and outside the British Council information exhibition. Each evening from 18.00 - 22.00 staff from the British Council and the British Embassy were at their exhibition space, under the amphitheatre. Information was provided about the UK, and included exhibitions about design, British education, learning English, British examinations and tourism.

    Extractions: History As in much of the rest of Arabia, the earliest known settlements in Oman date from the 3rd millennium BC. In that era an empire known as Magan developed along the Batinah, Oman's northern coast, exploiting the rich veins of copper found in the hills around Sohar. The region's economy declined over the centuries and sometime around 563 BC northern Oman was incorporated into the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Southern Oman's Dhofar region flourished due to the presence of frankincense-producing trees. This aromatic gum was one of the ancient world's most sought-after substances and it kept southern Arabia wealthy well into the 6th century AD. In the mid-8th century AD the tribes of northern Oman swept into the rest of Arabia, briefly conquering Medina, where they were subsequently overthrown by the Abbasids. Though defeated, Oman managed to remain relatively free of Abbasid control. Until 1506, when the Portuguese began prowling the Indian Ocean, Omani naval power had few rivals in the area. The Portuguese occupied Oman for more than a century, until they were expelled by Imam Sultan bin Saif in 1650. This victory marked the beginning of a great expansion: by the end of the 18th century the Omanis ruled a far-flung empire. At its peak in the 19th century, under Sultan Said bin Sultan, Oman controlled both Mombasa and Zanzibar and operated trading posts even further down the African coast. It also controlled portions of the Indian subcontinent. Oman stagnated after Said's sons split his empire, a situation which the British exacerbated by pressing the sultan to end the trade in slaves and arms for which the country had long been known. This left the sultan a great deal poorer, and lack of money left the interior difficult to control. When Sultan Faisal bin Turki died in 1913, the interior's tribes refused to recognise his son as imam, leading to a split between the coastal area ruled by the sultan and the interior, which came to be controlled by a separate line of imams.
