Extractions: Prepared by Cathy Moulder The McMaster community has been saddened by the death of Lloyd Reeds, for whom McMaster University's Map Collection is named. Dr. Reeds died Friday April 19th at the age of 85. He was originally appointed to teach Geography and Anthropology at McMaster in 1948, and was the founder of the Department of Geography and its Chair for the first 12 years. He was a wide-ranging researcher whose areas of expertise included agricultural geography and particularly the loss of farmland in the Niagara Peninsula. Most notably, he was a superb teacher. Alumni who visit the Map Collection always remember him fondly, and particularly the enthusiasm with which he taught Canadian geography. The Map Collection was named in his honour at his retirement in 1983, and the School of Geography and Geology also maintains four annual Lloyd Reeds prizes for outstanding student achievements in various undergraduate courses. McMaster is undertaking a local area atlas, similar to the atlas recently produced by the Peel Region Planning Department. Participants in this

The Act requires major federal projects in the United States to undergo an environmental impact assessment. Many countries and jurisdictions followed the American example, including Canada and Ontario. It was with these needs in mind that it was decided to develop a distance education certificate program utilizing the resources of Lakehead University and the University of Waterloo. The development of the program has been contracted to these academic institutions by the Northern Development Education Fund, Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities [1988]. Extractions: Housing Upon academic acceptance, non-Canadian students will receive a booklet from the International Students Office in which housing costs, etc. are outlined. There are limited facilities for housing graduate students on both campuses (including facilities for married students). Application should be made as early as possible through the Student Housing Office at the appropriate university. Private housing is available in homes in the Kitchener-Waterloo area; prices range upward from $80/week (without meals). This type of accommodation is scarce close to campus, so you should arrange, if at all possible, to arrive in early July or earlier to obtain suitable housing. The Housing Offices at both universities maintain lists of available accommodation. The Program cannot undertake to obtain housing. Financial Assistance There are several forms and types of financial assistance available for the well-qualified student. These are as follows: (a) Teaching Assistantships Each department has a limited number of Teaching Assistantships (TAs) available to qualified students. These vary in amount, but they do not exceed about $5,492 per term. Depending upon the amount of the assistantship, the responsibilities vary from 5-12 hours of work per week. Normally, a candidate will instruct one or two laboratory classes per week, but the job assignments can vary with departmental needs. Thesis Masters students will usually be funded for three terms and PhD students for six terms. Coursework Masters students will normally be funded for two terms.

Extractions: Ontario Heritage Day as a holiday Preamble As a name for the region west of the Ottawa River and north of the Great Lakes, "Ontario" only dates from the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Before then, the place was known as Canada West, and before 1841, Upper Canada. Before 1791, it was called "the upper parts of the Province of Quebec", and before 1763, it was simply "le pays d'en haut" - the upper country of New France. Ontario is bounded to the South by the freshwater inland seas of the Great Lakes and to the North by the salt water of Hudson Bay. To the East, the Ottawa River serves as Ontario's boundary, and to the West, the boundary is Lake of the Woods. In between are almost literally countless small lakes and rivers. All told, water accounts for just fewer than 12 per cent of Ontario's total geographic area. In modern Ontario, virtually all the major highways and rail transportation corridors follow the historic waterways of a more romantic age. The total area of the modern Ontario territory is somewhat more than one million square kilometres. This makes it the second largest province in Canada (after Quebec, with British Columbia a close third). It also makes it considerably larger than either California or Texas in the United States, or France and the United Kingdom combined.
