The genus Didelphis is from the Greek dis (twice) + delphys (womb) = (two wombs), in reference to the paired reproductive tract of females found in North America's only marsupial. The Latinized specific name virginiana (of Virginia), refers to the state from which the first scientific specimen was collected and described. Opossums ( Didelphis virginiana ), America's only marsupial (the name "marsupial" derives from the Greek word for "bag" or "pouch.) represents one of the oldest families in the animal kingdom. Practically a living fossil, this marsupial is the only native mammal in the United States that carries its young in a pouch. The unmistakable opossum is generally about the size of a plump house cat with a long, naked prehensile tail, a white face with pointed snout, and naked leaflike ears. Opossum feet are shaped somewhat like human hands with an opposable thumb on the back feet. The coarse, grizzled fur is generally grayish in color but can vary from white to brown to black. Opossums may weigh as much as 14 pounds; males average 6 to 7 pounds and females average 4 pounds. The mouth contains 50 teeth more than are found in any other North American mammal. Extractions: Site Map The short tailed opossum ( Monodelphis domestica ) is a member of the zoological order marsupialia. Included in this order are kangaroos, sugar gliders, wombats and Tasmanian devils, along with a widely diverse number of other animals. All marsupials have several features in common. Among these are the structure of their reproductive organs, dentition and a short gestation followed by a long developmental period for their young. Most female marsupials have a pouch in which they carry their babies. Short tailed opossums don't. Instead, the newly born babies attach to their mother's nipples which then enlarge and securely hold them in place against her stomach. Short tailed opossums are 4 to 6 inches in body length when full grown. They weigh between 3 and 5 ounces. Males tend to be somewhat larger than females. Their thick, velvety fur is usually gray-brown on top and lighter underneath. They have a prehensile tail used for balancing, as well as carrying bedding or other items. Unlike their North American cousins, it isn't weight bearing. Native to the South American countries of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, short tails are frequently found living in houses, where they are readily welcomed since they feed on rodent and insect pests.

Most are omnivorous or carnivorous. Several species are arboreal; one is aquatic and has fully webbed hind feet. Didelphids can be found in most habitats from sea level to over 3000m, from dry thornscrub and grassland to tropical forest. The extinct relatives of didelphids were even more varied in their morphology and habits; one group specialized as large carnivores, with one species actually resembling sabre-toothed cats, while another group apparently converged on kangaroo rats and other desert rodents. Didelphids have a full complement of teeth (five upper and four lower incisors on each side of the jaw, one canine , three premolars , and four molars ). Opossums are small to medium in body size; all have five digits on fore- and hindfeet, with the first toe on the hindfoot partially opposable; all digits except the first toe on the hindfoot have claws (it has a nail). FRIENDS OF OPOSSUMS I'm always interested in how you perceive and interact with your many wild neighbors. These creatures live around us, whether some of us like it or not, so we really need to learn how to get along with them. It's not that hard, you know, and as you can see from the following two letters, there are many benefits. Some are immediate and obvious, while others are subtle and heart-warming. Take your pick. THEY EAT SNAILS ... For people who are fortunate enough to be adopted by an opossum, congratulations. Your opossum will eat your snails, eat your slugs and eat your ants. It will also eat your windfall fruit including the pits (we have three volunteer plum trees that fruit all summer long), and will clean up miscellaneous leafy muck and debris along wet pathways. They will befriend your cats and improve the quality of their lives.

Extractions: Opossums Suffer From Frostbite Though the Virginia opossum (Didelphus virginianus) may spend several days at a time holed up in a den during these cold winter months, it does not truly hibernate. (True hibernation allows an animal to remain inactive, in a torpor. Its breathing rate slows, its temperature drops and it does not eat.) Since the opossum remains active, it must eventually emerge from its den to search for food to sustain itself. Mainly nocturnal, the opossum will wander through an area at night and feed on almost anything it finds: plants, fruit, insects, snakes, frogs, small mammals and carrion. It has adapted well to human habitations, feasting on our household garbage and the carrion we provide in the form of roadkill. At this time of year it is not uncommon to turn on a porch light in the evening and discover an opossum under your bird feeders as it feasts on the fallen seed. Frostbite is a common occurrence in opossums during severe winters. Not only their tails, but also their naked ears are at risk. You may have noticed an opossum in your neighborhood that looked a little odder than usual and realized parts of its ears and/or tail were missing. It was most likely a victim of frostbite.
