Extractions: Orangutans are large apes with long, red hair. They have very long arms that are used for movement in the trees. Its hands and feet are hook-shaped for latching onto branches. They also use their hands to grasp small twigs that they can use as a tool to obtain food and hold food in their hands while they move about. Males are about twice as big as females and have striking flaps on their cheeks. They can make very strong calls by inflating a pouch in their throat, which adds resonance to their call. Orangutans have large brains and exhibit a high level of intelligence.

Extractions: Taxonomy and distribution Orangutans are the only great apes outside Africa, and occur in dwindling forested habitats on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Fossil material indicates that orangutans were formerly widespread in continental Southeast Asia. All extant populations had until recently been regarded as a single species Pongo pygmaeus , but in 1996, after analysis of mitochondrial DNA, it was proposed that the genetic divergence between orangutans from Borneo and those from Sumatra was sufficient to regard the two forms as separate species: the Bornean Orangutan Pongo pygmaeus and the Sumatran Orangutan P. abelii The Bornean Orangutan occurs in forests in at least two of the three nations sharing the island: Indonesia (Kalimantan) and Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak); its presence in Brunei is unconfirmed. There appears to be significant divergence between orangutan populations from different parts of Borneo, and two to three subspecies are now recognised by many authors. The Sumatran Orangutan occurs only in the provinces of Aceh and Sumatera Utara in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. As with other forest animals, it is difficult to assess orangutan population size and monitor trends. In the late 1980s the total population was tentatively estimated at approaching 180,000; this figure was derived by multiplying a value for species density by an estimate of the remaining area of habitat. In 1990, the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group estimated that there were approximately 30,000 to 50,000 orangutans remaining in the wild, but cautioned that these figures may have been over-estimates.

An international group of scientists pooling more than 30 years of data has concluded that behavioral patterns among different orangutan populations show evidence of culture. The finding pushes the origins of culture among great apes back to 14 million years ago, when orangutans and African apes last had a common ancestor. Great apes include orangutans, found only in Asia, and Africa's gorillas and chimpanzees. Earlier studies had shown evidence of cultural learning among chimpanzees, suggesting that great ape culture had been around for at least five to seven million years. Transmission of cultural knowledge in orangutans and other great apes has implications for understanding the evolution of human culture. Culture, which can be defined as the presence of geographically distinct behavioral variants that are maintained and transmitted through social learning, was long considered to be a uniquely human trait.

No, it's not a bird, but one of your closest relatives in the animal kingdomthe orangutan of Sumatra and Borneo, who shares 96.4 percent of the same genetic make-up as humans. These peaceful, red-haired primates spend their days chowing down on fruit, leaves and flowers from trees, along with any stray insects that might be hidden among the foliage. Mom and baby orangs keep busy grooming each other, and then it's early to bed at sunset in a nest of branches. Because they're larger, the older males are more comfy sleeping on the ground. Threatened by the destruction of its forest environment to make room for farms and villages, and to harvest lumber. Diet in the wild: Orangutans are omnivorous; they eat both plants and animals such as: fruit, leaves, flowers, bark, nuts, shoots, insects, bird eggs, and small mammals. Some may be seen eating soil, a source of minerals for many animals. Water is drunk from tree holes by dipping in a hand and sucking the water-drops that fall from its wrist. Diet in the zoo: Fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, and kiwi, in addition to vegetables like carrots, yams, and romaine lettuce. Physical description: Second in size only to the gorilla, the orangutan male weighs 130-220 lbs; whereas, the female is about 88-110 lbs. Height, males are 4 to 5 ft and females 3 1/2 ft. Characterized by long, shaggy, reddish-brown hair that can reach 20 inches. Bare face, with round eyes and small ears. Short, weak legs and long, powerful arms, curled fingers and feet, flexible shoulder and hip joints. Size usually determines the orangutan's sex since males are always much bigger. In addition, males develop large fleshy flaps (cheek pads) on faces, and large throat pouches. Males also possess pouches of pebbly skin on chest.

Extractions: of life in the wild ONE OF THE WORLD'S oddest schools sits not far off the main road in eastern Borneo, roughly 30 kilometers (19 mi.) inland from the coastal oil fields north of Balikpapan, carved out of a hectare and a half (3.7 acres) of swampy rain forest. At first glance, the Wanariset forestry research station might be mistaken for a prison, with security guards on watch towers keeping a vigilant eye. There are cages, tooa total of nine scattered around the compound, some of them 50 meters (160 ft.) high, most divided into various-sized compartmentsand all brimming with young orangutans. The 200-plus red apes at Wanariset are victims of a poaching problem that persists throughout Borneo and Sumatra, their only remaining natural habitat. In the shrinking rain forest, orangutans are easy prey for smugglers and native Dayaks, who fancy them both as pets and as fresh meat. The lucky ones are confiscated by government officials and taken to a rehabilitation center such as Wanariset, where scientists and veterinarians face the difficult task of preparing the animals for return to the wild. The rudiments of the Wanariset curriculum are obvious in the cages, where wheels and bars and swings build locomotory skills, or at the edge of the forest, where small groups of orangutans are taken daily for tree-climbing practice. Sometimes, staff members sit with the groups and show them how to peel and eat various fruits, a lesson the imitative apes learn quickly.
