Due to large scale de-forestation they are an endangered species, there are only around 20000 Orangutan's left in the world. Orangutans are the largest aboreal (tree dwelling) animals in the world. They primarily eat fruit but also leaves, flowers, bark and insects such as termites and butterfly larvae. They are unique among primates as they live in semi-solitary social groups. Extractions: A solitary animal, the Orangutan is the largest tree-living mammal. Found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in the Indo-Malayan Realm., this great ape rarely descends to the ground and males can grow to sizes of over 300 lbs. The threats to the Orangutan are habitat destruction caused by commercial logging and agricultural clearance for farming and the commercial trade which alarmingly seems to have seen a revival. Live and dead Orangutans are being sold, with products such as Orangutan skulls fetching upwards of US$ 70 in some regions. Steps taken to strengthen and protect the species include, the protection by law in both Indonesia and East Malaysia of the Orangutan and the development of three Orangutan Rehabilitation Centres where captive individuals are re-introduced to the wild. An international collaboration of primatologists has gleaned evidence from decades of observations of orangutans that the apes show behaviors that are culturally based. The scientists' findings push back the origins of culturally transmitted behavior to 14 million years ago, when orangutans first evolved from their more primitive primate ancestors. Previous evidence for cultural transmission in chimpanzees suggested an origin of cultural traits 7 million years ago. The researchers also warn that illegal logging and other habitat destruction in the forests of Sumatra and Borneo could not only threaten further research into the earliest origins of culture, but continue the dangerous decline in orangutan populations. In an article in the Jan. 3, 2003, Science, the scientists presented evidence for cultural transmission of 24 behaviors. These include:

Physical Characteristics: Orangutans have large heavy bodies similar to that of a great ape covered with a thin shaggy coat that is reddish brown in color. The male may grow to 4.5 feet tall and up to 200 lbs. Females are smaller at 3.5 feet and approximately 100 lbs. These primates are built to move in trees with long and powerful arms and extremely long toes. They usually use all four limbs to distribute their weight but can stand and walk on two legs if they want to. Behavior: Orangs spend most of their time alone, except for females and with their young. They are active during the day and are almost exclusively arboreal. Orangutans have a vocal repertoire of 13 sounds. Within a small social group, they communicate by lip smacking. They have excellent eyesight and can see in color. Reproduction: Females begin to bare young at the age of 8 to 10 and have a gestation period of about 260 to 270 days. The offspring is born, weighing about 3.5 lbs., and lives beside its mother until it is about 6 to 8 years old.

The finding pushes the origins of culture among great apes back to 14 million years ago, when orangutans and African apes last had a common ancestor. Great apes include orangutans, found only in Asia, and Africa's gorillas and chimpanzees. Earlier studies had shown evidence of cultural learning among chimpanzees, suggesting that great ape culture had been around for at least five to seven million years. Transmission of cultural knowledge in orangutans and other great apes has implications for understanding the evolution of human culture. Orangutans once roamed throughout Southeast Asia, numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Today, orangutans are endangered and live only on Indonesia's islands of Borneo and Sumatra. New research suggests that orangutans have developed their own culture.

Adult males weigh about 144 kilograms, often about twice the size of the females, who weigh about 65 kilograms. Adult male orangutans have large cheek flaps on their faces. They have a sac under their chins which they inflate with air to make a long call which can be heard about a kilometre away. Behaviour Male orangutans are generally solitary animals, spending almost all their time on their own. Females are accompanied by their young. Orangutans rarely come to the forest floor, spending their time mostly in the upper canopy of the trees. They build a fresh nest each night, high up in the trees. Much of their time is spent eating. They are mainly fruit eaters, wild figs and durians being preferred food. However, about 400 separate items have been identified as part of their diet, including roots, nuts and berries, insects, reptiles, eggs, bark and leaves.

Eighty percent of their habitat disappeared over the last 20 years, and illegal trade in orangutans as pets is booming. When the police confiscate pet orangutans, they are taken to Pasir Panjahn, a small village in southern Borneo, where Orangutan Foundation International operates a center whose mission is to prepare orphaned orangutans to be returned to the wild. The founder of the center, primatologist Birute Galdikas, says the goal is to let the orphaned apes learn from one other and tap their own instincts about surviving in the jungle.
