This comprehensive guide to diet and nutrition provides solid advice for families looking to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The four habits of healthy families—Plan Together, Prepare Together, Play Together, Portion Together—and possible integration strategies are thoroughly discussed as well as the Healthy Family for Life (HFL) diet plan, which contains both family and individual food assessments, activity and weight patterns, activity planning, and suggestions for family support. Providing practical tips for making healthy changes on a daily basis and recipes that are simple, yet nutritious, enough for the busiest of families, this manual is an invaluable reference for those who tend toward obesity and encourage unhealthy eating habits, as well as families looking to reinforce their already healthy tendencies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information!
There were so many seriously inaccurate nutrition claims in the first few chapters that I couldn't finish this book. Although some of the ideas are sound (menu planning and family involvement will certainly improve your ability to eat well), it is a disservice to people fighting for good health to provide them with wrong nutrition information! Accurate information can be found on the Weston A. Price Foundation's website at [...] or in Robyn O'Brien's book The Unhealthy Truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Planning
A theme of the work is to plan healthful food
choices. Food preparation is covered in detail.
For instance, proper food portions are discussed.
An increased waistline is associated with
myeloid leukemia.

Increased muscle mass helps to burn calories
more efficiently so athletics are critical.
Model activities include walking the dog,
gardening, painting, car washing, home repairs
and vacuuming. Readers are warned not to rely
on a good metabolism alone.

A variety of healthy choices are extolled. i.e.

o fruit
o non-fat yogurt
o baked potato
o plain aired popcorn, nuts and lentils

Food content is discussed at length. For instance,
pinto beans have selenium (Se. ) . Kidney beans have fiber.
Black beans contain magnesium (Mg. ). Chick peas
contain folate and black eyed beans are high in
calcium (Ca. ) content.

The author indicates how a single sugared soda a day
may add 15 pounds or more per year. The book is an
excellent reference for trim people and dieters alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthier Family!
So far this book is giving really good advice. It isn't a page turner, however it does give you sound common sense advice about what should be in your families food choices. It makes you think, "well duh, I knew that but just wasn't applying it"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and easy to understand
I have been overweight most of my life and heard about this book on the radio. This book is so informative and very encouraging.I like that she doesn't make you feel like you have to do this strict plan to lose weight. She just shares a wealth of knowledge that helps you learn to make better choices. She also makes you feel like even with small changes you are making a difference for you and for your family.I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars HFL
In the dedication of her book, Amy brought to light her mom, "who so struggled with her weight and her happiness."

She is very honest with the term, "Fat Families, Thin Families",however, she does look to our best life collectively with our family.

In March 2008 I met and spoke with Amy at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California earlier this year. There she let me know I could pre-order the book on amazon.com. I ordered the book from Amazon and I'm happy that I did.

Do you think/worry about the future of your children/family based on your own health?

Amy challenges us to move the target to family team lifestyle rather than on the crisis of our own personal weight loss for a season. The book challenges us and re-challenges us to think tomorrow for ourselves and generationally.

The framework of the book is the 4 P's: Plan, Prepare, Portion, and Play. The book is a vehicle to help us move together in the right direction and shifting habits to Healthy Families for Life (HFL).

Request Amy's Health Pearl For The Day on the book's website, there's a lot of great information to keep you on track.

1-0 out of 5 stars Idiotic
I completely agree with the reviewer who pointed out the idiocy of this book. Nearly all of the suggestions in this book fall into two categories: 1) things we've all heard or read a million times before; 2) things that are so stupid that they're obviously space filler (e.g., when staying at a hotel, tell the staff NOT to serve you room service no matter what you say. Tell them you'll sign a contract if needed ---Is the author kidding me!!??).

Please don't waste your money on this. It's garbage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book balm for dieters
An offbeat treat for the chronically weight-challenged, Ms. Bodger's book is balm for the souls of those of us who daily go forth, engaged in the battle of the bulge .

Tips and "tricks" are generously leavened with gently wicked wit and humor, but the overall message is one we all need to hear, and often: Fat or thin, beauty comes from within, and we're each endowed with our own unique loveliness. The book exhorts us to lighten up on ourselves, to love and accept ourselves the way we are this moment, while still being open to improvement.

Good on ya, Ms. Bodger!

1-0 out of 5 stars For the most part, this book was awful.
At first, this book was fine. Some of the tips were helpful and meaningful, but after reading several pages I found this book was not serious. Being an overweight person actually looking for helpful ideas, I do not need to be told to "stand next to fatter people" so that I may look thinner. Or better yet, "buy larger furniture so I look smaller." Some of her ideas were outrageous and down right idiotic. Being a heavy person who needs motivation, I found this book highly offensive and I do not recommend it to those really trying to lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Book of Dirty Diet"GEMS"
Keep this book near and dear to your heart fellow dieters. (And near to youryour refrigerator as well!) It can save you endless hours, days, months, and yes, years of dieting! Look and feel thin the easier way. Carole Bodger is not only a genius, but a heroine to all the "fat at heart".
A "must have" for your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Dirty Diets" Done Darn Well
The title is a bit misleading. These aren't "dirty tricks" at all, they're actually really clever and really funny tips that any man, woman or child can use to look a little slimmer. And today, not after a month of exercising your sweat glands dry and eating nothing but tofu salad. I think the best thing about it is that you want to keep reading it over and over. It's not some boring diet book that you'll add to your shelf of diet books and forget. There are tips in the book for every aspect of life and you'll want to keep it handy for every occasion. ...
