5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Used by students and residents for many years, this is a great resource for any student or physician caring for the female and obstetric patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
Awesome edition - has everything you'll want to know as a med student, intern, ob/gyn resident, REI fellow, and even attendings.Lots of good info in this brick of a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for a reaonable price
The newest edition is comprehensive and concise. Its not longer a pocket edition.I highly recommend this as a quick resource in residency.

3-0 out of 5 stars good book but size was not convenient
this book had a lot of useful information but the size of the book has expanded from its previous edition. it did not really fit into the pocket of scrubs or a white coat and made it hard to use on the wards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book for Ob/Gyn Clerkship
A good, thorough review of most ob/gyn topics dealt with on a medical school rotation. Straightforward layout and thorough table of contents made it easy to use in clinic. The amount of information contained is impressive and useful, but it is uncomfortably heavy to be carrying around in your coat pocket all day. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for PA students
I found this book to be a wonderful supplement to everything I learned on my ob/gyn rotation.Everything I needed was in this book for my end of rotation exam on which I scored very well.I would highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obstetrics and Gynecology by Beckman
-easy to read, with short chapters-got through this twice on my rotation
-excellent diagrams and tables
-not sharp enough to pick up on ANY factual errors like yellow leaf
-good conceptual introduction to general OB/GYN
-explanation for answers are sparse, but at this level you should realize that you should read from different sources, you should be able to fill in the blanks, and you should be using other questions books
-supplemented with HY OB/GYN, Case Files, Pre-Test, and Blueprints Q&A to prepare for the shelf
-overall would recommend Beckman, HY, and Pre-test as minimal for shelf. Case Files was ok, but HY covered most of the points and I felt the clincal vignettes in HY was better for teaching you how to think like an OB/GYN. Blueprints was comparable to Pre-Test.
-for those looking for a more rigorous text, I felt NMS was better at explaining things in terms of basic science. And the questions weren't half bad (although I only went through about 1/3 of them). For this reason, those starting out thrid year with OB/GYN should consider using NMS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Detailed info, but full of typos and errors
Bought this book for my Ob/Gyn rotation, thinking it would be the best resource because it's designed around the APGO learning objectives, which the shelf exam is also supposedly based on.

Strengths:
- coverage of all topics you might see on the exam
- generally good resource for basic intro to ob/gyn
- some useful tables and graphs
- lots of multiple choice questions for testing recall after reading

Weaknesses:
- way too many typos and factual errors. This book has obviously been through multiple revisions over the years, without careful editing. For example, they say that you should get the tetanus booster shot once btw 14-16 yo. Most of us know that you should get this booster once every 10 years. There is way too much sloppiness in this book for it to be a reliable resource.
- questions are mostly pure factual recall; there is very little clinical reasoning. The shelf exam is almost entirely clinical vignettes with long stems, requiring clinical reasoning. So the book's questions are pretty much useless for preparing for the shelf.
- the questions on the CD-ROM are 95% the same as the back-of-chapter questions, but the answer choices are rearranged and there are more typos and incorrect answers marked. There is no reasoning given with the correct answer choice.
- the 5% of other questions are often outdated and seem to be left over from previous editions (e.g. questions on Norplant or other things that are not mentioned at all in the text).
- multiple diagrams seem to be left over from previous editions, not particularly clear; most of these should be redrawn. Some of the things you'd like to see in diagrams are not there.
- multiple tables have duplicate entries, or things have slipped from one column to another. Very sloppy typesetting/layout; poor design makes the book hard to read.

This is an OK resource for general background reading for the shelf. For better exam prep, I would recommend Case Files, which I used and liked very much; much easier read, with much better graphs and tables, organized for learning, understanding and retention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wandering through Women's Health
This book is a very easy read!! I found the review questions in the back to be very beneficial!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book of OB/GYN. The chapters are short and concise!
I just finished my gynecology course and I pretty much didn't have to go anywhere else to look for further information. I aced my class. I love this book and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of Ob/Gyn. The chapters are very easy to read and it's especially designed for us Medical Students(not residents) who have little to study a specific subject, because they are short but have everything YOU as a Medical Student have to know.
I wish I had found it earlier when I took my Obstetrics course.
Buy it with confidence, you won't regret it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OB/GYN
This is a great book for those entering into OB/GYN residencies. It's not as expensive as the Gabbe & William's Obstetrics, and key fundemental topics are covered.I think the ob sections are slightly better than the gyn. However, it does have CROEG guidelines in it!

3-0 out of 5 stars PDA software tough love
The book is wonderful. It supplemented by 3rd year med school ob/gyn rotation well. However, I have yet to get the PDA supplement to work.Very frustrating and complicated - must download multiple files, create accounts...

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellet book
This is a very good book of Obs and Gyn which provided a lot of information on simple way. Everything what is important is bolded on each lesson. It doesn't contain many pictures and schemes and this is the only disadvantage, but that is quiet enough for good understanding. It is suitable for medical students (everything important is signed) and for physicians who work or intend to work on Obs and Gyn Department (to have some concise book for him when they can find everything they want). I highly recommend this title.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful reference book
This book contains a wealth of knowledge for any caretaker of the Obstetric or Gynecology Patient. I found this book extremely easy to use asa cross reference book and it largely aided me in my research. It coversthe basics, such as general female anatomy, as well as more complex issueslike AIDS in pregnancy. Important information appeared in bolder print anddrew my eye, making it easy to skim over in a hurry. I highly recommendthis book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OB/GYN reference
GREAT guide for residents.I used this book and dog-earred many pages.Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars great review for CREOG
Great book..wonderful quick guide to everything you need to know fast!

I also used this as a quick review for CREOG's, it has all the high yield stuff they'll test you on!

Cons: a slightly larger type version should be considered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better...
For this book, you need a magnifying glass to read it! The print is way too small. It's okay to use when accompanied with a textbook but not great on its own. Additionally, I think it's out of date and not up to ACOG standards. Of the entire 5 week rotation, I picked up this book once!

5-0 out of 5 stars review
best little book I had as a resident, comes in handy at least once a week as a community-hospital-based FP.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* OB/GYN Book for your pocket...
You can tell the medical students at your local teaching hospital. They're the ones with the short lab coats and the pockets bulging with small paper-back books.

For those who are in training to become a Doctor a premium is placed on easily-accessible, highly accurate and important information.I remember going through my clinical rotations and thinking that I needed a "pocket" book for every medical rotation to supplement my massive 20-pound, $100 texts while I was on the wards and in the clinic.

Early into my OB/GYN Residency I got the hot scoop - THIS is the book to keep in your lab-coat if you're practicing OB/GYN.By the time I was a chief resident this book had saved me time and heartache and saved my patients from my blunders over and over.Like all "pocket" texts, this one doesn't contain lengthy discussions. But it DOES contain what you need to get through that night on OB/GYN call. And the next one.... and the next.

The treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (and hundreds of other common clinical situations)- before it's burned into your brain it's right here at your fingertips. It even gives you concise "go-by's" for how to dictate your operative reports for the most common OB/GYN surgeries.

Since I got my first one a decade ago I've never NOT had a copy of this in my lab coat.I use it infrequently now, but when young trainees seem to need a push towards a clue - I push them towards this little gem. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars DANFORTH'S OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, 8TH
This book is not like an ordinary medical textbook. It is more like an intermediate type between a medical text and a medical periodical. It gives considerable space to progresses of many medical-scientific research and the names of their authors. While on the other hand, it provides extremely concise outlines of etiology-manifestation-diagnosis-treatment for many common diseases, sometimes even skip certain important topics. As far as I am aware of , the following common topics are not or barely mentioned by this book:physiological changes of pregnant women; rubella infection during pregnancy;breast feeding of mothers with mastitis; the route and rate of mother-child transmission of HIV; the differential diagnosis ofruptured ectopic pregnancy; contraindications of the use of IUD;forceps use in labor; APGAR;There are also quite a few mistakes in the rear index.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Rotation!!!
This book had everything I needed to feel like I was learning what was expected of me during the rotation as well as helping me get a great foundation as to base my studies for Step 2. I plan on looking back at this book while I get ready for Step 2 to brush up on the finer points. Overall a great book and worth the money spent!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent primary resource for 3rd year ob/gyn clerkship
I haven't been impressed with Blueprints for medicine or psychiatry, but for ob/gyn it's the single best review book.Pair up with Casefiles and a question book or question bank online and you will do very well on the shelf.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview
For 2nd year preview on OB, or a quick reference for third year, this is ok.However, it will not even come close to the depth of info on the NMBE shelf exam

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!

    Book Description
SOAP for Obstetrics and Gynecology features over 60 clinical problems with each case presented in an easy-to-read 2-page layout. Each step presents information on how that case would likely be handled. Questions under each category teach the students important steps in clinical care. The SOAP series is a unique resource that also provides a step-by-step guide to learning how to properly document patient care. Covering the problems most commonly encountered on the wards, the text uses the familiar "SOAP" note format to record important clinical information and guide patient care. SOAP format puts the emphasis back on the patient's clinical problem, not the diagnosis. This series is a practical learning tool for proper clinical care, improving communication between physicians, and accurate documentation. The books not only teach students what to do, but also help them understand why. Students will find these books a "must-have" to keep in their white coat pockets for wards and clinics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Gem in the Recal Series
Second only to Surgical Recall in the series, this was an invaluable tool for preparation, particularly on the mornings or evenings prior to GYN surgery.Use it to review the pertinent anatomy and physiology prior to attendance in the OR and you will be rewarded by escaping that uncomfortable silence that ensues when you don't have a clue to those inevitable pimps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for New RNs in Women's Health/L&D/Maternity Depts, etc.
I'm a new Rn (13 months) working on the L&D unit at a large teaching hospital in Orlando, FL and I've been researching maternity nursing software for a new smartphone/PDA that I plan to purchase. The search lead me to the Skyscape website and this Johns Hopkins manual. Skyscape allows you to download a trial form of the software onto your pc so that you can view the product before buying. This is the 5th item that i've viewed today alone and I'm so incredibly HOOKED on the manual that I plan to buy it from Amazon immediately and purchase the pda software (though I am a little apprehensive about the software now based on reading the second reviewers comments on here).Anyways, I will be precepting a graduate nurse in a couple of weeks and I will totally recommend that she purchase this manual as well because it provides an AWESOME, EASY TO READ, TO THE POINT, description, instruction and medication treatment (dosage, side effects & contraindications) for EVERYTHING that I've encountered thus far on L&D - and I've only read the section on "Normal Labor and Delivery, Operative Delivery, and Malpresentations".I wish I had read this when I first started working on the floor because it would've provided a GREAT transition into this field of nursing from nursing school. The information provided is SHORT, SPECIFIC and VERY CLEARLY WRITTEN. Even though the manual is written for med students, it totally provides a great learning tool for nurses as well because it will help me with anticipating the need of the physician when providing intrapartum care on the labor floor, which in turn increases provision of effective patient care.A big THANK YOU to the authors ! :o))

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for your rotations
This is a compact book following the same formula for the other manuals from this collection (Ex Washington manual). It is not a treatise and it is not intended to be so, quite the contrary. It is a pocket book, easy to carry and to manipulate. It cover all the topics you might need for your day to day life in the hospital in a short , but not too short, and up to date format. I like the fact that you can read any chapter in less than 30 minutes. I recommend this book for medical students in need of a compact book to carry during the GOB internship or for revising topics before an exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars an utter waste of time (and EXPENSIVE)
Do NOT buy the PDA version of this classic manual. The manufacturer shipped me a mismarked (wrong Operating System) shrink-wrap package with a warning that opening it would disallow a refund. The correct product had been mailed despite the mislabeling, but the convoluted registration process was time-consuming and produced an INVALID activation code. The purported SmartPatch fix also failed. Now, 6 days after paying for the product, it still doesn't work and the short East-coast technical support hours mean that MAYBE tomorrow, the 7th day after purchase, I MIGHT be able to use this product. Had this manufacturer been less paranoid about piracy, using a more standard serial # activation (like OTHER manufacturers), I'd be a happy customer recommending their product. ... Read more
