This book is easy to read and offers just the right amount of information for a medical student or resident. The chapters are short and just focus on the essentials, so that it serves as a quick reference when you really just don't know a topic. For the non-Ob/Gyn physician, it can also serve as an excellent resource. The book would be an excellent way to study for the obstetrics and gynecology clerkships, as well as the subspecialty clerkships. ... Review of the previous edition

"The text with accompanying visual aids is an excellent quick referral guide to nearly everything undergraduate students will meet during O+G. It has found the right level in terms of undergraduate content and has struck the right balance between full curricular coverage and avoiding unnecessary detail. I would not hesitate to recommend it to my students."

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Companion to Accompany Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies (Paperback)
I'm a certified-nurse midwife and I love this book. It's pretty much everything that's in the medical text, Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, minus the research data.

It's small and portable and actually a pleasure to read.

I hope there's an updated version coming out soon - this one was published in 2002.

5-0 out of 5 stars The easier-to-read "Bible" of Obstetrics
There are two texts that are considered the most authoritative on the subject of Obstetrics.Williams is edited by the staff at Parkland, the largest Obstetric hospital in the U.S. and not surprisingly, they consider their text to be "the premier source for the specialty". Williams is also academically dry.

Gabbe, by comparison, is easier to read and covers essentially the same material. This text is written in a way that that I feel you don't have to be an OB Geek to follow the various points. This is NOT to say that Gabbe is "OB for Dummies" or a cliff-notes version of an OB text: As Department Head of OB/GYN at a Major Hospital, I find Gabbe both authoritative and complete.

Cutting to the chase: Gabbe is easier to read than Williams, and if you need info more in-depth, you should already be a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology anyway (or at least a junior fellow), which means that you're accessing the ACOG website on-line anyway. ... *Clinical pearls highlight key points
*USMLE-style comprehension questions with each case
*Primer on how to approach the patient
*Proven learning system improves shelf exam scores

Superior to other case file books.
--Chang-Kun Choi, Medical Student, Midwestern University School of Medicine

Using clinical scenarios not only makes the reading fun and interesting, but it is far more engaging than sitting down with a bulleted text and reviewing detail after detail. This is a much better way to learn clinical information. I have not read a book like this before, and I certainly have enjoyed it.
-–Eric Hossler, Medical Student, James H. Quillen College of Medicine

I LOVED this book!I would recommend this book to all third-year students… The book uses a clinical approach and does not lose sight of the pathophysiology behind the disease -- GREAT preparation for being on the wards! The subject matter is also deceptively detailed, with much more information than one normally finds in a text of case files. The reader can use this book as either a rigorous self-test or a read-through introduction to the subject.Once again - a GREAT text!

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this!
If you need to study for a shelf exam or just to know what is up, get the case files books.Read them once when you start your rotation.Read them again the week of the test. And read something more substantial in between - something with lots of facts. That is the only thing these books are lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book.
this is an amazing book. great for learning the material for the rotation as well as the shelf exam (hits on the important things to know...it got me honors).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I am a second year medical student preparing for the boards while taking my courses. I really like this book.It gives a case then after the case has a description of the answer, a detailed explanation of the case, diagnosis, treatment, definitions, etc.It finishes each section with a few multiple choice questions. The chapters are short enough to read one in your"spare time."I recommend this to any medical student that enjoys to read case studies as a complement to their textbook reading.:)

    5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for 3rd year OB/GYN rotation
This book helped me to honor my 3rd year OB/GYN rotation. I recommend it- easy reading with lots of pearls throughout. I just kept it at my bedside and read a few cases a night. I used this with Blueprints and was very prepared for the shelf exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Efficient Resource for Shelf Exam
Echoing the sentiments of previous reviewers, this book basically has 30-40% of the Ob/Gyn shelf within its pages.A lot of my friends read the book as well and were similarly amazed at its mimcry. Some of the questions seem to directly stem from the 60 cases in this text. You're hurting yourself by NOT reading this.It provides a good foundation for the major scenarios you might encounter in Ob/Gyn.It's particularly effective because the Ob/Gyn shelf is really specialized to the field and doesn't have too many general medicine questions like other clerkship tests.

That said, it should be noted this is not a textbook. You won't really get the ins and outs of fetal monitoring, birth, etc. This book is best utilized about a week from the exam or very early with the intent of RETAINING the specific scenarios.A good book to read to fully flesh out the subject would be Blueprints in Ob/Gyn.

A quick, effective read that's the easiest way to bettering your shelf score. If you enjoy your off time in med school, this is a great way to cram. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars OB/GYN
This is a great book for those entering into OB/GYN residencies. It's not as expensive as the Gabbe & William's Obstetrics, and key fundemental topics are covered.I think the ob sections are slightly better than the gyn. However, it does have CROEG guidelines in it!

3-0 out of 5 stars PDA software tough love
The book is wonderful. It supplemented by 3rd year med school ob/gyn rotation well. However, I have yet to get the PDA supplement to work.Very frustrating and complicated - must download multiple files, create accounts...

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellet book
This is a very good book of Obs and Gyn which provided a lot of information on simple way. Everything what is important is bolded on each lesson. It doesn't contain many pictures and schemes and this is the only disadvantage, but that is quiet enough for good understanding. It is suitable for medical students (everything important is signed) and for physicians who work or intend to work on Obs and Gyn Department (to have some concise book for him when they can find everything they want). I highly recommend this title.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful reference book
This book contains a wealth of knowledge for any caretaker of the Obstetric or Gynecology Patient. I found this book extremely easy to use asa cross reference book and it largely aided me in my research. It coversthe basics, such as general female anatomy, as well as more complex issueslike AIDS in pregnancy. Important information appeared in bolder print anddrew my eye, making it easy to skim over in a hurry. I highly recommendthis book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars DANFORTH'S OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, 8TH
This book is not like an ordinary medical textbook. It is more like an intermediate type between a medical text and a medical periodical. It gives considerable space to progresses of many medical-scientific research and the names of their authors. While on the other hand, it provides extremely concise outlines of etiology-manifestation-diagnosis-treatment for many common diseases, sometimes even skip certain important topics. As far as I am aware of , the following common topics are not or barely mentioned by this book:physiological changes of pregnant women; rubella infection during pregnancy;breast feeding of mothers with mastitis; the route and rate of mother-child transmission of HIV; the differential diagnosis ofruptured ectopic pregnancy; contraindications of the use of IUD;forceps use in labor; APGAR;There are also quite a few mistakes in the rear index.

    Product Description
This second edition of the innovative text, modelled on the current MRCOG curriculum, provides all the information that is required by the trainee and specialist during training and when preparing for the MRCOG examination.

This book is divided into three Parts - General, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Sub-sections within these major areas are broadly based upon the elements of the curriculum that are highlighted within the RCOG trainee logbook. To ensure consistency of approach throughout the book, all elements within each Part have been written to a template structure, adherence to which has been strictly enforced by the expert editorial team. Each element opens with an introductory section of 'MRCOG standards', highlighting the 'Theoretical knowledge' and 'Practical skills' relevant to the discussion that follows. Within the discussion, clear sub-divisions of the text under standardized headings ensure ease of reference. Each element concludes with a brief list of key references as an aid to further study.

Throughout the clinical elements of the text the supporting evidence for efficacy of the interventions described has been presented according to the guidelines of the RCOG. Recommendations for medical, surgical, psychological and complementary treatment and diagnostic tests are all subject to this appraisal, a feature unique among obstetrics and gynaecology textbooks at this level.

This textbook has establsihed itself as an indispensable guide to the specialty for all trainee obstetricians and gynaecologists in preparation for the MRCOG examination and beyond. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good bood, but don't buy new version if you have old one
This book is a good review for the radiology boards. That being said, if you have the older version already, don't bother to buy the new version. I went through the book, and there were approximately 4 new/different cases throughout the whole book as compared to the original version. The author did update many pics, even in the cases that she re-used, but I didn't think it was worth buying it again. Hope this helps.
