The first guide to bridge the gap between medical and surgical gynecology

A Doody's Core Title

Written by clinicians from the same department of Obstetrics and Gynecology responsible for the landmark bestseller Williams Obstetrics, this full-color text and atlas offers a complete overview of gynecology that no other source can match. In its pages, you'll find a templated, in-depth examination of the entire spectrum of gynecologic disease.

Supporting this unparalleled coverage are a gynecologic surgical atlas, and numerous comprehension-building algorithms, tables, and figures that clarify differential diagnoses and preferred management strategies for treatment. And unlike most multi-authored texts, Williams Gynecology has a consistent, even tone, as all of its editors and authors are affiliated with Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

FEATURES:

  • Encyclopedic scope covers the full range of gynecologic disorders, from cancer and infertility, to urogynecologic disorders
  • Full-color atlas section consisting of 350 figures that illuminate operative surgical techniques -- created by the Director and students of the Biomedical Communications Graduate Program at UT Southwestern.
  • Strong procedure orientation, covering a wide array of surgical operations, which are illustrated in detail
  • Numerous clinical algorithms and boxes highlighting differential diagnoses and best-practice treatment methods
  • Experienced author team from Parkland Hospital that updated the classic Williams Obstetrics--the leading reference in obstetrics for more than a century

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gyn reference
This book provides just enough detail as a gyn/surgical or even FP/IM reference, but not to specific for just a quick review of topics for the boards. The pictures and diagrams were helpful, especially if you needed to photocopy a chart or two to carry with you on rounds (like you got extra room to carry anything else!!!). This is one to keep in the office!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
Williams Gynecology is a great addition to my gynecology reference library. As a freelance medical writer, I depend on having up-do-date reliable information at my fingertips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Gyn Text for Topics & Surgical Content
Williams Gynecology is an excellent Gyn Text that I feel Residents will find infinitely helpful in expanding their learning knowledge. It is extremely well designed & has both topic content & surgical content which are both crucial in the learning of the tenets of Gynecology.I highly recommended it!

5-0 out of 5 stars William's Gynecology
An excellent text! Very easy to locate information. Love the color pictures. I prefer it over the other gynecology texts we were required to purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection
I just received my Williams' Gynecology text 1st edition 2008 and must say that it's stunning in breadth, detail, illustrative creativity, and organization. The most important aspect is the constant attention the authors at Dallas Southwestern have paid to maintaining a contemporary evidence-based medicine approach throughout each chapter which is devoted to the field of gynecology. I'm not surprised in the least that such a perfect masterpiece has been written by the folks at Southwestern, the same group devoted for over a century to the world-renowned and authoritative text, Williams' Obstetrics. This companion book provides the medical student considering a career in gynecology and the resident in-training or practicing OB/GYN physician all they require to become well-versed and exemplary in the classroom, clinic, and OR. It is an impressive example of perfection in writing style and illustrative genius. Congratulations to the many physicians and specialists who made this book a reality. You've clearly shown yet again, that the Dept. of OB/GYN in Dallas, Texas is the pinnacle source of research, education and training in our great field of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Obviously, I would strongly recommend this text to accompany TeLinde's Operative Gynecology for anyone in an OB/GYN residency program. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as high yield for board review as you'd expect
Bought this during residency as a way to do some quick review for CREOGs when I was too exhausted or unfocused to read a full text.Hoped it would function for me as "Surgical Recall" did in med school, but its size prohibits portability. Product Description
This pocket-sized book provides the most up-to-date and vital information on obstetrical and gynecological problems in a concise, portable format. It focuses on diagnosis and therapy, including management protocols, medications, and dosages. Common problems such as normal labor and delivery, preterm labor, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cervical cancer screening, contraception, and STD, are covered in greater detail. Key facts on uncommon conditions, such as uterine inversion, puerperal SPT, chancroid, gonadal dysgenesis, and vaginal cancer, are also presented.

Medical students and interns can find pearls on pelvic and breast examinations and cervical examinations during labor, and they can also prepare confidently for quizzes by quickly glancing over the terminology, etiology, and other background information or using the handbook s mnemonics to recall the key points. Seasoned clinicians will find most recent guidelines on cancer screening, antibiotic prophylaxis, thrombosis prevention, and subspecialty referral.

Operative techniques and procedures such as knot-tying, instrument use, perineal laceration repair, amniocentesis, and measurement of AFI and cervical length are illustrated to help trainees learn the basic skills. Thirteen operative dictations describe the common procedures with the latest techniques, ideal for junior residents who face a seemingly daunting task.

The bullet-and-number format, full-color illustrations, color-coded sections, and open-flat design make the information easy to find and pleasant to read. With its sewn binding and sturdy cover, the handbook will endure years of vigorous use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little comprehensive handbook!
This is a great little handbook to carry around in the hospital. The majority of the text is devoted to comprehensive diagnostic criteria and management sections for each illness. It also contains some simple and very relevant diagrams and algorithms.

The only criticism that I would, albeit a minor one, is that the formatting from page to page isn't always ideal.Sometimes a heading is at the bottom of the previous page relative to the content, so finding a particular heading can be difficult. This makes the book seem like it's a little amateurish...

Overall, a great book and definitely up there with good Obs&Gyn pocket resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for MS3 OB/GYN rotation
Hello, I am an MS3 who recently completed my OB/GYN rotation at Maricopa hospital with Dr. Zheng, the author of this book. This book was extremely useful for several reasons.First, it is as accurate, evidence-based, and relevant as it is succinct.Everything is cited and sections that would otherwise be too long or exhaustive for the book (such as Antiphospholipid syndrome) have the most recent, relevant peer-reviewed literature on the topic so that you can look them up separately. The information in here is relevant for SHELF studying, outpatient OB, preventative ob/gyn, and even goes into suturing techniques and urogynecology. It is very comprehensive.Second, it is a small, very portable book.As any medical student reading this knows, having a small pocket reference for a rotation is a great way to quickly read about the key features of a disease or clinical exam/lab/imaging for a given diagnosis before you see the patient and then before you present to the preceptor. This book is as useful for OB/GYN as the red MGH book is for medicine, and less dense with more illustrations. It also compares to Harriet Lane for peds but again the advantage here is size with just as much evidence-based content.I plan to go into internal medicine and ever since OB/GYN I've kept the book on me because it is the most handy reference to have for knowing the standard of care for ob and gyn related issues in various clinical settings.

I admit that my review may be slightly biased by having worked with Dr. Zheng, but I am happy to endorse any work from a professor as humble and genuinely interested in teaching as Dr. Zheng is.Also this book contains a medical spanish guide at the end because Dr. Zheng works at Maricopa County Hospital serving a large hispanic population.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST OB/GYN HANDBOOK
My most sincere congratulations to Dr. Zheng for a wonderful handbook. It is comprehensive, easy to use, and up-to-date. The pages are jam-packed with useful information that is outlined in a crystal-clear manner. I strongly recommend it for medical students, residents, and attendings alike. It has everything: basic chapters outlining knot-tying techniques and operative reports, excellent chapters dedicated to the diagnosis and management of obstetrical and gynecological problems, and essential and easy-to-follow information from the subspecialties. The newest ACOG recommendations including the new guidelines for the management of cervical dysplasia are clearly presented. Without any doubt, the Comprehensive Handbook was for me the one study material with the highest yield when preparing for the Oral Boards. Again, my most sincere congratulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
This is a great resource for a busy medical student, resident or physician. As a student, I would have loved to have this in my pocket. It provides useful information and includes references for more in depth coverage. Many books are overwhelming, especially for students on their clinical rotations. This book is a must have for third and fourth year students on OB/GYN rotations.I highly recommend this as a quick reliable reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little book
A great, easy to use and comprehensive handbook. The dictation examples at the end are a life-saver for a busy intern; they also help students to prepare for a case in a step-by-step review. Knot-tying, suture types, and basics on handling instruments provide a leg-up to medical students on Gyn or other surgical rotations. The illustrations on basic ultrasound are huge for those running a busy triage for the first time. Overall, a great investment; applicable from med school through private practice! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BRS - Ob-Gyn
This book was advertised as new but there was a name and phone number hand written inside the front cover (Lorie Harper 424-1338).There was no other writing in the book and it appears to be in otherwise good condition.
My only comment, is that you can't advertise a book as new if it isn't.Slightly used would have been better.
The promptness of the seller to get the book to me was satisfactory.Despite this one exception, the book is as advertised.Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for residency
It is not like the most complete book ever....I think it is kind of too superficial at times...but it probably has everything you have to know. It is a must have during the residency...but not later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Rerenrence book
The quality of Novak's Gynecology has been steadily improving. It is one of the best reference books for gynecologists. The lead position of Comprehensive Gynecology is definitely challenged by Novak's. For the next edition, I hope the publisher could change the design of the contents. The book is too heavy and a lot of empty space could be saved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
I have used this text as a reference in a number of writing projects in women's health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Novak Revisited
Having used the "old" Novak while securing my education, I was pleased to recieve my newly published edition. The text and pictures are timely and helpful.I keep it in my office for reference. The family practice residents have the privilege of using our book to supplement their knowledge as well.Meg Stoyle-Corby, CNM, MSN
