Editorial Review

Product Description
In the decade since the first edition of this work was published, an incredible array of reproductive technologies and associated issues has emerged. Obstetricians and gynecologists are hard-pressed to deal with the startling breadth and depth of these issues, which require mastery over a daunting combination of ever-increasing scientific knowledge, technical skills, long hours, legal liability, and exposure to clinical situations of overwhelming emotional intensity.

Psychiatrists have a vital role to play in helping obstetricians and gynecologists cope with a host of problems whose resolutions require not just technical skill, but also knowledge of biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, ethics, and law. For example, to design and implement strategies to reduce the transmission of HIV, psychiatrists could work with public health workers to incorporate the psychology, sociology, and anthropology of female reproductive behavior. Psychiatrists could likewise improve the diagnosis and treatment of breast and pelvic malignancies by elucidating the factors that deter women from self-examination and regular medical screening and enhance treatment compliance.

Divided into three sections, this clinical and theoretical sourcebook addresses every major area of contemporary concern.

  • Pregnancy covers topics from the psychology of normal gestation to physical and psychiatric complications during and after pregnancy, including new prenatal diagnostic techniques and the dynamic issues that emerge when abnormalities are detected, and the use of psychotropic drugs and electroconvulsive therapy in pregnant and lactating patients.
  • Gynecology discusses not only common gynecologic problems but also more controversial issues such as induced abortion and the new reproductive technologies, including the role of the menstrual cycle in exacerbating and precipitating psychologic symptoms, the psychiatric aspects of menopause, the assessment and management of chronic pelvic pain, the psychosocial concomitants of gynecologic malignancies and the emotional demands on the oncology team, and the special implications of HIV/AIDS.
  • General Issues offers a broad, balanced view of topics rarely found in the literature, such as men's reactions to women's reproductive events, substance abuse and eating disorders, sexual and physical abuse (often part of the histories of patients with personality disorders and posttraumatic stress disorders), ethical and legal issues, and health care for lesbian patients. Of special significance is Dr. Stotland's chapter on how consultation-liaison services are provided to obstetrics and gynecology services.

This practical and scholarly volume is exceptionally useful as a teaching reference for medical and other health care students and residents in psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology. It also provides a valuable resource for the clinician working to improve the psychological well-being of women patients. ... Read more

Product Description

The world's leading gynecologic surgery reference for 60 years, TeLinde's Operative Gynecology is now in its revised Tenth Edition. In this new edition, TeLinde's leads the field with a Best Surgical Practices section in each chapter that synthesizes the best way for surgical procedures.

This classic text is rooted in the Johns Hopkins tradition of gynecologic surgery, but now includes 75 contributors, for a broader, more complete presentation of national and international practices. The book provides encyclopedic coverage of the etiology, diagnosis, and step-by-step surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases and disorders of the female pelvis. More than 1,600 illustrations demonstrate the surgical techniques.

The Tenth Edition has brand-new illustrations in the chapters on diagnostic and operative laparoscopy, control of pelvic hemorrhage, surgical conditions of the vulva, laparoscopic hysterectomy, ectopic pregnancy, paravaginal defect repair, posterior compartment defect repairs, intestinal tract in gynecologic surgery, and operative hysteroscopy. A new two-color design highlights important figures and tables. Each chapter of this edition includes definitions and revised self-testing questions.

A bound-in DVD provides videos and accompanying text on para-aortic node dissection, avascular spaces of the pelvis, pelvic node dissection, hypogastric artery ligation, and presacral neurectomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars TeLinde's operative gynaecology
I love this book. My only worry is that the prints are rather small for my 'poor lighting' reading situation at night. I shall get a reading lamp.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
i purchased this bood at the request of one of the physicians i work with.it's ok as far as explaning procedures and how they are done, but the dvd that was included does not contain video procedures of any surgies that ii need to learn.it would have been nice to actually watch an open abdominaal hysterectomy. visual aid is just as important as reading about a procedure.would not recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best for Gynecological Surgery
You can't find a better book if you're trying to learn gynecological surgery. It is really a complete text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful gynecologic surgery textbook on the earth
This book is very useful for my gynecologic surgery learning period and just like a friendly teacher on my hand !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" for Gyn Surgery
There are at least two texts that are considered "the authority" for internal medicine. The same for Obstetrics.

For Gyn surgery there is only one, and this is it. Te Linde's is so far ahead of any competitors that all Gynecologists I know consider any other texts to be useful only as supplements to Te Linde's.

It is also written in an easy to follow style - not as dry as many medical texts, and it is exhaustively complete. It would be worth the price (for a Gyn Surgeon) if only for the portions dealing with hysterectomy and surgical treatment of cystocele and stress urinary incontinence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price for our busy OB/GYN protocols.
We have a very large single-speciality OBG group. I was able to use these with very little editing! That says volumes about the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Protocols helpful in Oral Board review
Hi. i first heard about Protocols from a posting on Medscape and bit the bullet in buying it to see if would be helpful in my review for my boards in November. though written in 2003 (new edition coming out 2/2008), i did find it helpful to augment study with Up To Date, Compendium (this book utilized the ACOG Practice Bulletins, etc), etc. it is alphabatized by topics and provides salient (in a nut-shell) info one should know, though these topics are not sectioned by GYN, OB, REI, ONC, etc and no pics are present, unfortunately. some very good tables and algorithms, particularly cardiac disease in pregnancy, breast disorders, etc. it also has a section on Boards in the back --these topics apparently are historically popular, but i wasn't asked much from there. i think the book would be helpful for boards study as an additional, but not sole, resource. i also think it would come in handy in day to day practice. the author has an interest (or has in the past) in working with ob/gyns trying to get boarded. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OB/GYN reference
GREAT guide for residents.I used this book and dog-earred many pages.Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars great review for CREOG
Great book..wonderful quick guide to everything you need to know fast!

I also used this as a quick review for CREOG's, it has all the high yield stuff they'll test you on!

Cons: a slightly larger type version should be considered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better...
For this book, you need a magnifying glass to read it! The print is way too small. It's okay to use when accompanied with a textbook but not great on its own. Additionally, I think it's out of date and not up to ACOG standards. Of the entire 5 week rotation, I picked up this book once!

5-0 out of 5 stars review
best little book I had as a resident, comes in handy at least once a week as a community-hospital-based FP.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* OB/GYN Book for your pocket...
You can tell the medical students at your local teaching hospital. They're the ones with the short lab coats and the pockets bulging with small paper-back books.

For those who are in training to become a Doctor a premium is placed on easily-accessible, highly accurate and important information.I remember going through my clinical rotations and thinking that I needed a "pocket" book for every medical rotation to supplement my massive 20-pound, $100 texts while I was on the wards and in the clinic.

Early into my OB/GYN Residency I got the hot scoop - THIS is the book to keep in your lab-coat if you're practicing OB/GYN.By the time I was a chief resident this book had saved me time and heartache and saved my patients from my blunders over and over.Like all "pocket" texts, this one doesn't contain lengthy discussions. But it DOES contain what you need to get through that night on OB/GYN call. And the next one.... and the next.

The treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (and hundreds of other common clinical situations)- before it's burned into your brain it's right here at your fingertips. It even gives you concise "go-by's" for how to dictate your operative reports for the most common OB/GYN surgeries.

Since I got my first one a decade ago I've never NOT had a copy of this in my lab coat.I use it infrequently now, but when young trainees seem to need a push towards a clue - I push them towards this little gem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make it through a night on call.
I am resident doctor training in Canada.
Based on interactions with my colleagues, I would easily say that the most frightening thing abour residency is being on call and hence being forced into terrifying unfamiliar territory/situations which you are expected to be able to handle alone. During the day, the entire team of residents and the attending can provide you with the back-up you need... not so useful when on call though.

This was my principle motive for purchasing this book and I wasn't disappointed. This book provides you with everything you need to deal with issues that arise when on-call. It's written in an easy to read format and walks you through ward and emergency issues as if you were encountering them for the first time. It will even direct you through the basics such as directing you to start an IV or a Foley (which may not be so basic when you are sleep deprived). It also explains simple concepts that you may have missed in medical school such as the volume of one unit of Fresh Frozen Plasma, and the degree to which each unit of platelets will raise the platelet count. What I particularly like is the ease by which you can get through this book. I read through the entire thing in about a week allowing me to cover alot of ground before starting my Obstetrics Rotation.

If you are looking for a comprehensive book that describes epidemiology, a complete list of risk factors, and a whole lot of impractical fluff, then this is not the book for you. It will however help you make it through the night.

I only wish I had discovered this book in medical school.

SOAP for Obstetrics and Gynecology features over 60 clinical problems with each case presented in an easy to read 2-page layout. Each step presents information on how that case would likely be handled. Questions under each category teach the students important steps in clinical care.

Blackwell's new SOAP series is a unique resource that also provides a step-by-step guide to learning how to properly document patient care. Covering the problems most commonly encountered on the wards, the text uses the familiar "SOAP" note format to record important clinical information and guide patient care. SOAP format puts the emphasis back on the patient’s clinical problem not the diagnosis.

This series is a practical learning tool for proper clinical care, improving communication between physicians, and accurate documentation. The books not only teach students what to do, but also help them understand why. Students will find these books a "must have" to keep in their white coat pockets for wards and clinics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Golden Little Nugget
The book provides a broad set of ultrasound images and diagnoses relating to each. I particularly studied the ovarian section and it comprehensively covers all the major areas with exceptionally clear and pointed examples. It is a great hand-book reference to catch up on a specific area especially if you may be less than familiar with it in the context of your practice but need the refresher. It would also be useful for third and fourth year students on their rounds. ... Read more
