Product Description
Although considered by MacArthur as his "number one" fighting general, Eichelberger is one of the least known of the World War II commanders. Professor Chwialkowski examines General Eichelberger's background, rise through the ranks, and wartime experiences. In the end, he concludes that Eichelberger failed to achieve a widely perceived "special competence" among his peers, that he had the bad luck to lead in "secondary" theaters of operations in both world wars, and, most importantly, that his personality undermined his standing among superiors and subordinates alike. As the only in-depth biography of Eichelberger, the volume provides new material on the campaigns at Buna, Biak, and the Philippines, as well as fresh insights on MacArthur's handling of the Pacific theater of operations. As such, the volume will be of considerable value to students of World War II and American twentieth-century military history. ... Read more

Product Description

A young Oxford graduate who was caught up in the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 and the Chinese Civil war, George Hogg led a group of Chinese children hundreds of miles across 15,000-foot mountains to safety—only to die tragically in early 1945. James MacManus was working as a reporter in Shanghai in 1980s when he heard talk of a statue being up in the remote town of Shandon on the Mongolian border in memory of an Englishman called George Hogg. This book is the result of his investigations, and the basis for a feature film. One westerner who lived in China throughout the Cultural Revolution described Hogg as "an outstanding young Englishman who fell in love with foreign people and devoted his life to their betterment. What he did made him deeply and widely loved." MacManus has been back to China to interview the surviving old boys of Hogg's school. Hogg's reputation is kept alive by their loyalty to this day. The dramatic trajectory of Hogg's life took him within a few months from a privileged existence at Oxford to life on the run from Japanese secret police in China.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational collection of sayings and truths from Mother Teresa
Like A Drop In The Ocean: 99 Sayings is an inspirational collection of sayings and truths from Mother Teresa. Instilling awe and hope in the lives of so many, Mother Teresa's impact upon the world will endlessly ripple across it surface for many years to come and Like A Drop In The Ocean provides readers with an accurate and intimate feel for the encouraging and moving idol. Like A Drop In The Ocean is very strongly recommended as both an inspiring compendium and an exceptional gift for anyone troubled, confused, joyous, or content. "AIDS is not a punishment from God. When we get sick, we do not acquire any fault. One of our own sisters got AIDS from an infected syringe. She died slowly. We are not to express judgments." Mother Teresa

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift Book for the Spiritual Journey
This small format, hard cover gift book is a treasure. In 99 pages, we read a variety of quotations from Mother Teresa. Recurring themes include nature, prayer, and love. We learn that the attention she got from the media was a burden to her, endured willingly because publicity for her work drew attention to the poor. She found speaking in public torture, saying it was easier for her to bathe a leper than to answer a journalist's questions.

The content of these brief passages is complemented by Mother Teresa's gift for language, for example,"I am only God's pencil, one that he uses to sketch whatever he wants," and "love's garment has a hem that reaches into the dust, and brushes it away." Every page has a message with the power to inspire. ... Read more
