5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing experience
Being myself an oceanographer (PhD), this book surprisingly came to me by chance. I knew the author and his work as much as I have never heard of this amazing small book, and I left it lying about on my desk during acouple of weeks before thinking about its reading. I was initially notenthusiastic, expecting another "boring" theoretical textbook on the oceancirculation. But to my surprise, the book is a fun read. Written as adialogue it leads the reader to deal with concepts that otherwise couldhave been really difficult to apprehend for non specialists. Here noequations, mathematical terms or esoteric scientific thinking. On thecontrary, here science is fun, really fun, intuitive and reallyunderstandable for everybody. This book is really more than apopularization book, it does not even seem to deal with scientific things! It is just an informal discussion between two persons with two differentpassionate views of the sea, including some fun anecdotes undeceivingscientific work at sea, but nevertheless very strong scientific thinking onthe functioning of the ocean circulation and the amazing feeling of theauthor enthusiasm for his work. More specifically, some computer programsdevoted to the visualization of different ocean circulation patterns can befound in annex, and could still, almost 15 years after their initialwriting, be an excellent starting point for undergraduate and graduatestudents on ocean sciences. This book is a wonderful experience I highlyrecommend to anybody wants to have an easy, but complete "view on the sea". ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Oceanographer was built as the pirvate yacht Corsair III for the industrialist J. P. Morgan, Jr., in 1899; sources differ as to her builder, but it was either T. S. Marvel and Sons at Newberg, New York,or W. & A. Fletcher Company at Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1917, the U.S. Navy acquired Corsair III from Morgan for World War I service and commissioned her as the patrol vessel USS Corsair (SP-159). Corsairwas returned to Morgan in 1919 and once again became Corsair III. On 2 January 1930, the Coast and Geodetic Survey purchased Corsair III from Morgan for $1.00 (USD) for use as a survey ship, and placed her in service as USC&GS Oceanographer (OSS-26) that year. Oceanographer operated along the United States East Coast during her career with the Survey. Oceanographer conducted many offshore surveys and discovered many of the canyons incising the continental slope between the Georges Bank area and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. She also supported the study of geophysics when Maurice Ewing conducted his first seismic reflection profiling experiments from her in 1935. ... Read more

Killworth (27 March 1946 28 January 2008) was an English scientist known for both his work on oceanography and the study of social networks. A prodigious writer, his published output exceeded 160 scientific papers over the course of his career. He was also known for his work as a pioneering author of text interactive fiction games during the early 1980s. When two currents (in this case the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents) collide, they create eddies modelling this sort of event was a key part of Peter Killworth's career. The major part of Peter Killworth's career was spent as an oceanographer, using applied mathematics to understand ocean dynamics. He had varied interests across the whole of physical oceanography, including the study of ice, polynyas, Rossby waves, instabilities and eddies. He first completed his doctorate in Numerical studies in Dynamical Oceanography at Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1972. After a year conducting research in California, he returned to Cambridge to work with his former PhD supervisor, Adrian Gill and spent the next twelve years at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, the latter part of this being spent as a Research Fellow of Clare Hall College. He maintained close ties to the US during this period, including teaching at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In 1985 he moved to Oxford to join the Robert Hooke Institute, also serving as a Research Fellow of Wolfson College, and later as a Fellow of St Cross College. In Oxford he "built and led a research team at the forefront of numerical ocean modelling". With the closure of the Institute, by t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23837760 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! USS Oceanographer (AGS-3) was a survey ship of the United States Navy during World War II that produced charts chiefly of passages in the Solomon Islands area of the Pacific Ocean. Upon transfer to the Navy, she had initially been named and classed as gunboat USS Natchez (PG-85). Before her World War II Navy service, she had been USC&GS Oceanographer (OSS-26), a survey ship with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey from 1930. From her launch in 1899 to 1930, she had been Corsair, a private steam yacht of American industrialist J. P. Morgan, Jr., except for a brief period during World War I. During that conflict, the United States Navy chartered her as patrol vessel USS Corsair (SP-159). She accompanied the American Expeditionary Force to France in 1917 and largely patrolled off the west coast of that country. ... Read more
