Product Description
This volume considers the geological processes at and biological colonization of, deep ocean spreading centres from both a modern, for example Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East Pacific and the South West Indian Ridge, and an ancient perspective, such as in the UK, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and the Urals. The book is one of the first attempts to bring together researchers from disciplines as diverse as geophysics and biology studying modern active hydrothermal systems and the fossilized remains of long-extinct hydrothermal systems that are now locked in the geological record.By using new knowledge of how hydrothermal systems function we can aid the understanding and prediction of mineral deposits now found on land.

Product Description
The Red Sea is an important geologic phenomenon because it affords researchers the unique opportunity to witness an ocean in the process of being born. The continental crust has broken along a complex jumble of faults and is slowly spreading apart and, with further rifting, this infant ocean will evolve into a younger version of the Atlantic. The author of this work has studied extensively the patterns produced by processes taking place in the Red Sea basin and on the adjacent continental masses, patterns that can be used to interpret older, larger, and more complex geologic features. His book describes the tectonics, structure, volcanic history, geomorphology, and economic aspects (potential for petroleum and heavy metals) of the area. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of geology, paleontology, and oceanography. ... This book, written by a group of internationally known experts, describes the evolution of the Pacific Ocean margins in terms of their interaction with oceanic plates. The work reflects changes in recent years in accepted views concerning the evolution of these margins. It is now thought that much of the crust of the margins may have grown through the gradual addition of discrete terranes of "foreign origin"--that is, of earth materials transported from other locations by tectonic processes. The margins discussed are those of western North America, Asia, Japan, Eastern China, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and South America. Also reviewed are the general concepts of oceanic plateaus and transported terranes, and the past motion of the Pacific Ocean Plate. ... Product Description
Changes in climate and sea level are nothing new - over the last 700 million years, the Earth has been slowly but constantly changing from within. We now know that our planet's surface, far from being fixed or stable, is composed of tectonic plates in continual movement, drifting in oceans which themselves appear and disappear over millennia. Such insecurity lies at the heart of both the physical and the living world, providing the creative impetus for all life forms to confront change, adapt and evolve.

This exceptional book celebrates the inevitability of global change and highlights our need as human beings to recognize and adjust to it. Its entertaining and accessible text displays a remarkable breadth and diversity of knowledge, drawing upon discoveries in natural history, geology, geography and paleontology to unravel secrets of millions of years. Its unique structure offers the opportunity to pursue two distinct but parallel narratives in one volume - the first characterized by discrete photo-essay spreads, and the second by authoritative running text illustrated with clearly numbered icons. Designed either to be browsed through like a website or read in chronological sequence, each chapter provides a fascinating glimpse into the formation and development of our world.

Glorious panoramic photography by the author, a specialist in interpretive landscape, reveals the physical legacy of the Earth s distant past. This intriguing exploration of key sites, often remote and inaccessible, provides a clear and original perspective on the Earth as a dynamic, interactive planet. The compelling narrative by a bestselling science writer places the history of our planet in a challenging contemporary context in which human beings, like all living things, must embrace change or fail to survive. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and compelling history of earth
Although I'm a scientist and I love the outdoors, I had only a rudimentary knowledge of geology/earth sciences before reading this book.Origins interweaves the history of the earth's continents, climate, and the evolution of life, and explains with clarity how they are interconnected.A running theme is that change has been, and will remain, a hallmark of our planet.Continents move.Ice advances and retreats. And life is always adapting.

The issue of man-made climate change is touched upon, but Redfern's primary goal is to elucidate the inevitable longer-term forces at play. For instance, it is nearly certain that Earth will re-enter a glacial period within the next couple of thousand years -- a tiny time frame by geological standards.

But, what makes this book truly compelling is the photography. The author utilizes dramatic landscape (and ice-scape) photography to tell the story of Earth's history.Origins serves as a non-technical science book AND a beautiful piece of art for the coffee table.

And, no, I have no connection to the author.I'm just very impressed with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like being there through words and pictures
I can't add anymore about content than what has already been said. This is an excellent introduction to anyone interested in the Plate Tectonic history of the Earth.

The narrative along with the excellent images went a long way in helping clarify the dance that the continents have been doing for the last 4.6 billion years.

I kept an Earth globe with me along with several other paleo-maps I've collected over the years. They all helped in keeping track of what the author was refering to in each chapter.

I'm really glad that he took the time in laying out the early part of the Earth's geologic history and made only a fairly brief mention of mans time on the planet. It could have been even shorter that it was, but for the most part he kept it reasonable.

I am a retired USGS Geologist/Scientific Illustrator, and have read and Illustrated many USGS publications.I only wish I could have been involved in the preparation of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plate Tectonics
This is, without doubt, the best review of plate tectonics yet published.I'm surprised that more has not been popularly written about this subject than has been.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Approach to Earth Systems Understanding
I have had the priveledge of close association with the author, Ron Redfern, throughout the writing, organization and photographic activities that support this publication. In acareer of geology-based endeavors, I have never enjoyed a more unique, thorough and emminently readable portrayal of the interlocking sciences that result in the Earth's evolutionary history. This is a complex subject. However, the author has made the 700 million year trip a pleasure. The beautiful, panoramic photography, the interweaving of summary-level essays, and meticulously time-based text, lavishly supported by color illustrations, gives the reader a multi-disciplinary view of not only our planet's geologic evolution, but also its close association with meteorological events and the evolution of life. The reader will want to read and re-read this book. A wonderful adventure, every time, with new perspectives of "how things work" discovered on each page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A paleo-archologist's point of view
One of many subjects treated here is the initial colonization of the New World, which has been the subject of often vitriolic scholarly debate for the past two decades. In this book Ron Redfern has managed to distill the essence of that debate in a highly readable fashion and shows how new data has dramatically altered our previous reconstructions of the timing and modes of arrival and dispersal of the first Americans. As always, the environment remains the dynamic stage upon which the prehistoric actors of antiquity operated-a theme which permeates the entire volume.

Product Description
Sea Legs is the story of Kathleen Crane, one of the first women oceanographers out of UCSD's world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography. By turns autobiographical and objective, Crane tells how her quest for freedom led her to the sea and her research of deep-sea underwater volcanoes. As a consequence of the difficulty of working in the U.S. gender segregated society during the 70s, she felt her only scientific future lay with cooperation with Europeans and even the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War.In the process she became an "accidental diplomat."

An explorer, environmentalist, and filmmaker, Crane's story encompasses the world's oceans, politics, and international relations, scientific espionage, ships, and a passion for the natural world. At its heart, however, it's a story about humanity and the forces that drive people to persevere, despite the odds, and do the things they love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for entering oceanography students.
There's a prof at Scripps who tells his entering students to read this book.I concur.I know many of the characters in the book and I believe Dr. Crane has accurately portrayed them. The nastiness of some of the characters is not gender based - the individuals will screw both genders equally. It's hard for me to tell when it's gender based or not; the people are just nasty, high strung, insecure people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Page Turner
I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up Kathleen Crane's memoirs of her experiences in graduate school at Scripps and her professional life.To many, it might seem that a book on oceanography is a bit too esoteric or "niche" to be of interest to the general public.

But "Sea Legs" is a truly fascinating, deeply (no pun intended) interesting book. For the scientifically inclined, the detailed descriptions of Crane's work will be of great interest. But the general reader benefits the most from this book, as the reader accompanies Crane and her colleagues on numerous voyages of discovery to fascinating destinations."Sea Legs" is well worth your time, and beleive me, it is a real page turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A memorable and informative autobiographical journey
Sea Legs: Tales Of A Woman Oceanographer is the personal and inspiring story of Kathleen Crane, one of the first female oceanographers to earn her credentials at the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. From research on undersea volcanoes, to meeting and befriending Soviet Union scientists during the height of the cold war, Sea Legs is a memorable and informative autobiographical journey filled with a love of science, a respect for the sea, and the sheer joy of reaching out to embrace the world. ... Product Description

150 years after Charles Darwin completed his epic voyage in "HMS Beagle", a research ship owned and operated by the UK's Natural Environment Research Council and bearing the name of the famous scientist, began another global circumnavigation that would take her away from her home base for three and a half years. Unlike "HMS Beagle", the Royal Research Ship (RRS) "Charles Darwin" would not be dedicated to the scientific endeavours of one man, but would support some 24 scientific teams studying topics as diverse as the causes of El Nino, deep sea currents in the Indian Ocean, and the speed with which the Indian sub-continent moved towards Asia.

The author, who was personally involved in much of the planning and operation of this round-the-world voyage, has made every effort to explain the complexities of modern scientific research in terms the non-scientist can understand, and to draw out some of the excitement today's scientists experience when their research reveals some unexpected discovery.

This book gives an historical perspective of plate tectonics. Furthermore, it discusses the foundations of rigid plate tectonics and the limitations of this approach. This classic approach can explain the data to a level of 95 % precision. Some anomalies subsit which must be explained by a more general model. The authors refer to these anomalies: for example discrepancies between spatial geodetical data and rigid kinematics in oceans or rheology significance of fractal dimensions in seismicity and faulting, etc. In this unique book the reader has access to data as well as to interpretations from a broad spectrum of disciplines. Great emphasis is placed on the limitations of the rigid plate tectonics theory of the earth. ... Read more

Product Description
The accumulation of organic matter allows inferences about a wide selection of processes in the geological past. The Kimmeridge Clay Formation (Yorkshire, U.K.) can be regarded as a model of the formation of hydrocarbon source rocks. The driving force of organic matter accumulation is the organic phytoplankton productivity, whereas oxygenation conditions seem to have played a secondary role. In Lake Bouchet (French Massif Central) organic matter appears to be a good indicator of paleoenvironmental changes occurring for over 350000 years. The book is of special interest to geologists and geochemists interested in organic matter accumulation. ... Read more

Product Description
Mineralogical-sedimentological and geochemical investigations in combination with pollen data of a 12.7-m-long dated sediment core from Lake Silvana, SE Brazil, permit the reconstruction of the climatic history over the past 10000 years. The lowermost section (I) reflects a coarse paleosol-type sediment with abundant plant debris and rootlets; pollen indicates grassland vegetation. Section II represents fine-grained lake sediments; pollen indicates a savanna-like vegetation. Section III represents a pollen-free, coarse-grained allogenic sediment deposited under high transportation energy (increased precipitation). Section IV, a greenish sequence with increasing C content towards the top, has a pollen spectrum of present-day vegetation (semideciduous forest). The different sediment sections show a connection with erosional phases in the catchment of the lake, based on mineralogy and geochemistry, which are a response to climate development. ... Product Description
From the dawn of humankind to today's global complexities, this monumental volume presents world history from an original perspective that provides fresh insights with every colorful spread. Few references are as invaluable, all-inclusive, and satisfying to browse. For readers of all ages, world history is easily accessible, depicted as never before—so that events occurring simultaneously around the world can be viewed at-a-glance together. For example, Texas Instruments launched the pocket calculator the same year the Soviet Union launched the first manned space station, in 1971. Columbus sailed from Spain the year Martin Behaim constructed a terrestrial globe in Nuremberg. The California Gold Rush followed the Irish Potato Famine in the 1840s, and the Greek dictatorship of Papadopoulos is overthrown the same year Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia is deposed and U.S. president Nixon resigns, in 1974. The book's innovative time line truly sets it apart, allowing readers to scan across a spread and explore a single area or compare contemporary societies across the globe.

This remarkable resource also contains dozens of maps; scores of sidebars; hundreds of illustrations; and thousands of events, milestones, personalities, ideas, and inventions. Throughout, vivid illustrations depict artworks, artifacts, portraits and dramatic scenes, while sidebar topics range from local customs and lifestyles to the effect of climate change on human migration. Drawing on National Geographic's vast resources, this concise yet comprehensive, one-of-a-kind work is as rewarding as it is compulsively readable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise History of the World by National Geographic
A good reference for significant world history events. While in depth information is not the purpose of the book the comparative timeline is great for revealing parallel events in other parts of the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars world history
I wasn't quite ready for the book's layout- it's written using timeline, column and rows with an occasional break to preface or highlight an era using paragraphs etc. This isn't historical fiction but then how could it be? There's far too much imformation for that- it is after all a history of the world! Once I got the hang of the layout I beggan to enjoy it reading it bit by bit. Probably best used to focus in on a particular time or culture- when backgound info is needed. This NG book will add to anyone's library- pick it up.

Product Description
This multifaceted study explores new directions for plate tectonic research, especially as a guide for future geodynamic modelling of the earth. In particular, it equips readers with a plate-tectonic toolbox (with derivations and ANSI-C code) for applications and reconstruction analysis, including new continuous calculation methods. It shows how to apply these tools to Late Mesozoic and Cenozoic kinematics, with a focus on hotspot reference frames, and for empirical analysis of continental stress histories, including fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs. Supported by solid arguments and data, the book integrates theoretical developments of expanded plate kinematic theory and an ensemble of critical observations into a grand model, with the new concept of mesoplates playing a key role. Written by an accomplished tectonics researcher and software developer, this graduate- and research-level monograph will interest academics as well as applied geoscientists, e.g. petroleum geologists. ... Product Description
In this engrossing and accessible book, Doug Macdougall explores the causes and effects of ice ages that have gripped our planet throughout its history, from the earliest known glaciation-nearly three billion years ago-to the present. Following the development of scientific ideas about these dramatic events, Macdougall traces the lives of many of the brilliant and intriguing characters who have contributed to the evolving understanding of how ice ages come about. As it explains how the great Pleistocene Ice Age has shaped the earth's landscape and influenced the course of human evolution, Frozen Earth also provides a fascinating look at how science is done, how the excitement of discovery drives scientists to explore and investigate, and how timing and chance play a part in the acceptance of new scientific ideas. Macdougall describes the awesome power of cataclysmic floods that marked the melting of the glaciers of the Pleistocene Ice Age. He probes the chilling evidence for "Snowball Earth," an episode far back in the earth's past that may have seen our planet encased in ice from pole to pole. He discusses the accumulating evidence from deep-sea sediment cores, as well as ice cores from Greenland and the Antarctic, that suggests fast-changing ice age climates may have directly impacted the evolution of our species and the course of human migration and civilization. Frozen Earth also chronicles how the concept of the ice age has gripped the imagination of scientists for almost two centuries. It offers an absorbing consideration of how current studies of Pleistocene climate may help us understand earth's future climate changes, including the question of when the next glacial interval will occur. 5-0 out of 5 stars Frozen Earth--Ice Ages
I liked this book. I have known about "Snowball Earth" for a long time. I have studied Geology and read many books about the ice ages. This author explains the concepts skillfully. It is too bad that some readers do not understand the concepts of geology, astronomy and earth sciences. But this author gives an organized and clear story of the history of our planet. Ice has played a critical role in the evolution of our planet.

He notes that we are currently in a inter-glacial (warm) period. Guess what? The ice will come again. Humans should think about this and plan accordinally.

Too techical, not general enough to engage one that is not experienced with that material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo! ... entertaining and comprehensive
Bravo ... excellent book! There is not much to say that others reviewers had already said. This is a very well written book that allows you to know some of the pioneer scientists that contributed to understand earth's past climate fluctuations and how geologist today have derived techniques to gather information from millions of years ago, such as ice/sediment coring, minerals magnetization, isotopes variation and others. For those who likes history, this is a book you must read, a book where the main character is the earth, and this is part of its biography. The earth has and perhaps will have another Ice Age, but as the author remarks at the end of the book, the increase of CO2 could eventually change this to a point that it would take too long to recover. We still don't know this clearly but we must be careful, so controlling CO2 emissions is a good precaution measure. As a complement of this book, I suggest to watch some of BBC Horizon documentaries like "The Big Freeze" and "Snowball Earth" or PBS "Mystery of the Mega Flood".

5-0 out of 5 stars Frozen Earth
A must read for anyone interested in long term as well as short term climate changes that have happened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good History on Ice Ages and Earth's Climate
Frozen Earth is a very good history of the earth's ice ages. The writing is a bit academic at times, and often feels a little too detailed (which is normally a compliment, but seems to slow down the pace of this book more than it should have). This book would be an excellent resource for students of geology and climatology. If you are interested in climate change, this book would make an excellent companion piece to "The Discovery of Global Warming", because "Frozen Earth" could have been aptly titled "The Discovery of Ice Ages". ... Product Description

October 1991. It was "the perfect storm"--a tempest that may happen only once in a century--a nor'easter created by so rare a combination of factors that it could not possibly have been worse. Creating waves ten stories high and winds of 120 miles an hour, the storm whipped the sea to inconceivable levels few people on Earth have ever witnessed. Few, except the six-man crew of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing boat tragically headed towards its hellish center.

Amazon.com Review
The unabridged audio version of Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm, read by Richard M. Davidson, moves in the same haunting fashion as thedeadly storm referenced in the title. Opening slowly, the story lullsyou with a false sense of calm, behind which looms an inexorablepower. Almost imperceptibly the drama begins to build and before youknow what's hit you, the sheer force of the cumulative events hasswept you into a maelstrom of tragic human consequence.

Junger'scarefully researched and sympathetic book is a mesmerizing chronicleof man's struggle against nature. Davidson's unassuming, slightlynasal tone subtly captures the drollery of the salty New Englandattitude. "People often get premonitions when they do jobs thatcould get them killed ... the trick is knowing when to listen tothem." He makes listening to The Perfect Storm seem likeyou're bearing witness to a natural disaster. You're powerless tohelp, but the awesome spectacle has such an emotional hold that it'snearly impossible to turn away. Start this tape too late in theevening and you may be in for a dark and stormy night. (Running time:nine hours, six cassettes) --George Laney ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure and devestation
October 1991 produced one of the most devastating storms to hit the North Atlantic. Follow the crew of the Andrea Gail as it struggles for survival in tumultuous seas and learn how the rescue attempts of other ships caught in the Perfect Storm went horribly wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing book -- awesome story of some brave men who face the seas daily, some to their peril.
The book was fantastic -- wonderful work -- my son and I thoroughly enjoyed this moving, sad and inspiring true story.Sebastian Junger did the crew justice.

3-0 out of 5 stars less than I expected
I kept waiting for the real good part of the book, but then I was at the last page and somewhat surprised. There are no whopping thrill rides, but you do get a picture that is pretty easy to envision (credit to the writer). I was disappointed and wouldn't recommend the book in it's entirety. I did enjoy learning a brief bit about the pararescuers and their training. that was the best part of the book; the brief section which describes the storm, how it formed, and the rescuers, and how they were formed. The rest was just extra pages that made it a complete story.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful competent storytelling
I relish the style of competent, detailed, unembellished storytelling that Junger does in this work.Precise factual descriptions of the circumstances, facts, and action of the fishing boat caught in a gale bring this to concrete life in a way that makes a vision more palpably real than the well known film on the same topic.I liked the film in its own right but this book is something different, a wholly different work that stands in the first rank of books of this type.I recommend it strongly to those with any interest in nautical subjects of any kind.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Horrible Formatting
I just started reading this, and it is a good story so far. However, the Kindle formatting is atrocious and that is what this rating is about. No quote marks around dialogue?Seriously?Paragraphs in the wrong places?Really? This is a real disappointment and difficult to read as a result.Hopefully as I read it the formatting will improve, but I looked ahead a bit and it does not look promising. ...
