Product Description

The Baltic Sea oceanographic research community is wide and the research history is over 100 years old. Nevertheless, there is still no single, coherent book on the physical oceanography of the Baltic Sea as a whole. There is a strong need for such a book, coming from working oceanographers as well as the university teaching programmes in advanced undergraduate to graduate levels.

In the regional conference series in physical oceanography (Baltic Sea Science Conference, Baltic Sea Oceanographers' conference, Baltex-conferences) about 500 scientists take part regularly. Even more scientists work in the fields of marine biology, chemistry and the environment, and they need information on the physics of the Baltic Sea as well. There are nine countries bordering on the Baltic Sea and five more in the runoff area. The Baltic Sea as a source of fish, means of transportation and leisure activities is highly important to the regional society. In the runoff area there are a total of 85 million people. Research and protection strategies need to be developed, as the Baltic Sea is probably the most polluted sea in the world.

Since the Baltic Sea has become an inner sea of the EU (apart from small shore parts of Russia in Petersburg and Kaliningrad), it is anticipated that the importance of the region will consequently rise. The book will arouse interest among students, scientists and decision makers involved with the Baltic problems. It will also give important background information for those working with biogeochemical processes in the Baltic Sea, because the physical forcing for those processes is of vital importance.

Product Description
The influence of Henry Stommel on the development of physical oceanography over the past four decades has been immense. Although he is best known as a major generator of modern concepts of ocean circulation, his research interests have encompassed much of physical oceanography, and the colleagues he influenced have explored every ocean, literally and figuratively. In this volume, comprehensive surveys trace the development of major oceanographic fields since Stommel began his professional life and summarize the state of these subjects now—they cover "where we are and how we arrived, what is known and seems probable, and what seem now to be the key questions."

The book opens with five brief essays offering personal reminiscences of Henry Stommel and assessments of his scientific contributions, written by Arnold B. Arons, George Veronis, Raymond B. Montgomery, G. E. R. Deacon, and F. C. Fuglister. It then presents eighteen invited survey articles, grouped into four sections:

General Ocean Circulation: deep circulation of the world ocean (Bruce A. Warren), the water masses of the world ocean (L. V. Worthington), mid-depth circulation of the world ocean (Joseph L. Reid), the Gulf Stream System (N. P. Fofonoff), dynamics of large-scale circulation (George Veronis), equatorial currents (Ants Leetmaa, Julian P. McCreary, Jr., and Dennis W. Moore), and estuarine and continental-shelf circulation in the Middle Atlantic Bight (Robert C. Beardsley and William C. Boicourt).

Physical Processes in Oceanography: small-scale mixing processes (J. S. Turner), internal waves and small-scale processes (Walter Munk), long waves and ocean tides (Myrl C. Hendershott), low-frequency variability of the sea (Carl Wunsch), the amplitude of convection (William V. R. Malkus), and varieties of biological oceanography (J. H. Steele).

Techniques of Investigation: ocean instruments and experimental design (D. James Baker, Jr.), geochemical tracers and ocean circulation (W. S. Broecker), and laboratory models and analogues of ocean circulation (Alan J. Faller).

Ocean and Atmosphere: air-sea interaction (H. Charnock) and oceanic analogues of large-scale atmospheric motions (Jule G. Charney and Glenn R. Flierl). ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides a thorough treatment of both theoretical and observational aspects of the interaction between the sea-floor and the near-sea-floor dynamics; the effect this has on the distribution of internal and seabed stress; and the relevance of the associated dynamics to sedimentation processes. The theoretical work described involved both analytical and numerical modelling studies of a wide range of near-shore and shelf processes. These provide a valuable store of information on the interaction between the sea-floor and the dynamics of the overlying water. The book also includes an account of tidal analysis techniques and how these are being applied in the analysis of tidal current measurements. The observational studies relate to measurements of near-sea-floor turbulence and sand-transport in the littoral zone. ... Read more

Product Description
Professor Bennett's work explores the potential for inverse theory, emphasizing possibilities rather than expedient or rudimentary applications. In addition to interpolating the data and adding realism to the model solutions, the methods can yield estimates for unobserved flow variables, forcing fields, and model parameters.Inverse formulations can resolve ill-posed modeling problems, lead to design criteria for oceanic observing systems, and enable the testing of models as scientific hypothesis. Ocean models considered range from linear, finite-dimensional systems of equality and inequality constraints, to nonlinear, regional primitive-equation models.Examples from the recent oceanographic literature are analyzed, and several outstanding research problems are surveyed. The methods employ solution techniques including Kalman filters and smoothers, representer expansions and descent algorithms.Exercises of varying difficulty rehearse technical skills and supplement the central theoretical development. ... Understanding and constructively using natural sound in theocean has become of prime importance with the shift of emphasis toprotecting the environment and exercising responsible global resourcemanagement which has followed the end of the Cold War. Especially nowthat we realise that marine mammals and other inhabitants of theoceans are threatened by our acoustic pollution of their environment, the use of natural sound as a non-intrusive remote sensing probe hasbecome particularly germane. This was the first meeting on the subjectsince the fall of Soviet-Westernbarriers, and the proceedings includesignificant work from premier researchers in the former SovietUnion. It was also the first meeting which specifically addressed thenew and exciting idea of using natural sound in applications formonitoring the marine environment. The proceedings include a number ofpapers on various aspects of this topic. Further new work on the basicphysics of sound production and propagation is also included. Thisvolume includes leading-edge work from the foremost researchers in thefield, including Bill Carey, Lawrence Crum, Nikolai Dubrovskii, DavidFarmer, Brian Kerman, Bill Kuperman, Michael Longuet-Higgins, HankMedwin, Ken Melville, A Prosperetti and many others. ... Product Description
This volume provides an overview of the experiences and results gained from oceanographic observations and research in Antarctica - in particular the Ross Sea - with the aim of providing guidelines for future developments and identifying future research needs. A general description and discussion of the oceanography of the Southern Ocean, and in particular of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current is given and the linkages between circulation and particle flux and biogenic elements are explored. This up-to-date data analysis and modelling effort contributes to a more complete understanding of the Ross Sea as a dynamical and ecological system and will be of great interest to scientists involved in physical oceanography, meteorology, climate and marine biological research. ... Product Description

Based on the material presented at a conference organized by the Centre d’Océanologie of Marseille, held in 2008, this text covers a wealth of hot topics related to the way mankind interacts with the marine environment. With the state of our oceans and seas becoming an increasing source of concern worldwide, this timely addition to the debate features the latest research in both France and Japan.

The book’s chapters present work on many of the key areas of oceanographic study. The concept of marine biodiversity is treated, in particular how it is affected by human agency and invasive species, many of which have been introduced anthropogenically. Coastal zones are analyzed in detail, with a focus on the interaction between ports and natural environments, and the ecological and economical consequences of this relationship. A chapter on aquaculture looks at ecologically sound management as well as the preservation of resources. New and emerging technologies that aid our observation of the marine environment are covered, as is the physical, chemical, biological and biogeochemical functioning of natural and man-made environments.

Featuring work by some of the leading researchers in the field from both France and Japan, this work demonstrates the strength of the links between the two scientific communities, and is an important contribution to the ongoing discussion on the effects of global warming as well as mankind’s impact on the marine environment we depend on for so much.
